Giants D: Give me Fewell, give me fire

October, 25, 2010

By Scott Randall

The Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants face off tonight for the 10th time on Monday Night Football, with the Cowboys holding a 7-2 edge in the series. The Giants have won three straight games after opening the season 1-2, and have a half-game lead over the Eagles and the Redskins in the NFC East.

The Giants win streak has been fueled by an elite defense led by new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell that now ranks second in the NFL in both yards per play allowed and yards per game allowed, and is tied for fourth in sacks.

Over the last three games, the Giants defense has dominated its opponents, allowing 11 points per game and just over 200 yards per game. It was a different story in the first three games, however, when opponents averaged over 300 yards of total offense and scored nearly 30 points per game against the Big Blue defense.

If this defensive trend sounds familiar to Giants fans, that’s because it bears a striking resemblance to the first six games of 2007.

Giants Defense 1st 3 Games 2007 vs 2010
2007 2010
PPG 32.3 28.3
Yds PG 368.7 306.0
Sacks 4 6
Team W-L 1-2 1-2

Giants Defense Games 4-6 2007 vs 2010
2007 2010
PPG 12.3 11.0
Yds PG 250.3 223.7
Sacks 17 15
Team W-L 3-0 3-0

That defense was also led by a new defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo, whose aggressive defensive approach played an integral part in the Giants victory in Super Bowl XLII. Like Spagnuolo, Fewell and his defense took some lumps early in the season, but the unit now appears to be hitting its stride as the Giants open divisional play tonight in Texas.
