My Early Take on the 2009 Giants Empty My Early Take on the 2009 Giants

Post  Big_Pete Mon Jul 07, 2008 7:18 pm

It is slow in the football world, so just for fun, I started to have a look at the possible Giants roster for 2009 and what kind of moves I would make if I were GM

  • I expect that Jacobs will be signed to a contract extention in the near future.
  • I expect that new deals will be done for Plaxico and Osi either this year or next.

2009 Giants Free Agents

QB David Carr UFA
RB Derrick Ward UFA
RB Danny Ware EFA
RB Kay Jay Harris UFA
TE Darcy Johnson EFA
WR Amani Toomer UFA
OL Grey Ruegamer UFA

DE Renaldo Wynn UFA
CB Kevin Dockery RFA
CB RW McQuarters UFA
SS James Butler UFS

Of all these, I am only expecting Darcy Johnson back. We might want Ward and Dockery back, but only for the right price; I think they would likely get better offers and opportunites elsewhere. I think Danny Ware will stick on the roster ahead of Reuben Droughns.

I think Chase Blackburn will not make the roster this year and Tyree will be on PUP initially.

I would like to sign a left tackle such as Jordan Gross, Stacy Andrews or Vernon Carey. But I think they will be too expensive. Other than that, there are no significant free agents that I would look to bring in. I would use the available salary cap to extend the contracts of our promissing youngsters, ensuring we keep the core of this team together long term.

Trade

I would trade TE Jeremy Shockey for a 2nd and 4th round pick (either this year or next)

Draft

1. NT Terrance Taylor, Michigan, 6-0, 310, 5.12

2b. WLB/SS Nic Harris, Oklahoma, 6-3, 226, 4.60

I think this would be a very strong roster with talented youngsters developing behind out starters and genuine competition at most positions.

I saw some of the names, and the draft list and was pretty confused. I've had a headache all day and now readying this I thought I was out of it haha...then i realized it was for 2009.

Your analysis as usual impresses me, Pete. I would love to see Feagles in Blue again, but he's been debating retirement for a while now, I'm not sure if he stays another year.

I want to see how this DJ Hall kid turns out this year. I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the roster in 09.

As for the draft picks, I don't really know much about any of them. During the college season I try to keep tabs on people but even then its just first day people for the most part and a few others that you or other people post on the MBs about.

I Feagles does end up retiring, we will most likely bring in a veteran punter; it is pretty clear the front office will let him play as long as he wants to. I am surprised that Feagles is back this year to be honesty, and he is under contract next season so I have assumed he is back.

FA punters availabkle in 09 include Craig Hentrich (Tennessee Titans) and Shane Lechler (Oakland Raiders)

What is intersting from here is that we don't need much in free agency, we have a solid team with great depth, by signing our free agents, we can keep the core of this team together for a long time. That is a very good platform for success.

I like Hall as well, I could easily see him winning a roster

as far as the draft, it is very early, but it is deep at alot of positions and we could do extremely well.

for the second day, I am looking at continuing the Giants tradition of productive small school players with excellent physical tools. That has worked well for us in the past.

The comp picks are likely, and I have assumed the Shockey trade at some point.
