Manningham signs on
Receiver Mario Manningham, the Giants’ third-round draft pick, officially signed a contract this afternoon and will be in camp on time when the players report to the University at Albany on July 24.
The team officially announced the signing just a few minutes ago. With Manningham in the fold, the Giants have only two unsigned picks – first-round safety Kenny Phillips and second-round cornerback Terrell Thomas - with camp just nine days away.
Manningham, a controversial selection because of a troubled past, will join what should be a very competitive battle for playing time at receiver this summer behind starters Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer. Second-year pro Steve Smith figures to be the odds-on favorite for the third receiver spot, leaving Manningham to battle Sinorice Moss for the fourth spot in the rotation.

(UPDATE: The escalator in Manningham’s contract could earn him an additional $1.9 million in salary in 2011, plus another $175,000 incentives. In other words, he has the potential to earn about $4.4 million over the life of the four-year deal.)[quote]The four-year contract that rookie receiver Mario Manningham signed with the Giants yesterday was worth about $2.3 million, according to my friends over at Scout.com.
Manningham, they said, received a signing bonus of $617,000. His salaries are all NFL minimums, meaning he’ll earn $295,000 this season, $385,000 in 2009, $470,000 in 2010 and $555,000 in 2011. The total of all that is $2,322,000.
However that doesn’t include the “generous escalator clauses” in the fourth year t hat I told you about (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2008/07/manningham-signs-on.html), so his contract potentially could be worth more.
All pretty standard stuff for a late third-round pick (95th overall), but I thought you’d like to know.

I agree there is a lot of competition coming up
and rookies cannot miss 1 day of practice let
alone any injury set back. see sinorice moss!
I would love to see a huge battle between
those 2 guys in camp.

Glad to see you here Martin and it's also good to see Mario signed.
Sinorice is going to have a tough time beating out any of the top 5 or 6 wr's. He still hasn't clearly proved to be better than Jennings yet.. who never even touched a football in college.

I am not giving up on Moss at all. Often it takes a few years for guys to impact. At the very least he is very cheap for another couple of years.
His brother didn't breakout until his third year.
Plus between injuries and being behind Toomer and Plax plus sharing time with Smith, he has had limited opportunities on the field.
Having said that Moss needs to step up and show what he has.
Moss is one guy I am defeinately keeping an eye on this camp; he could surprise people.
Either way the competition we have is great. whoever wins the roster spots will have earned it the hard way. That is very good for the Giants WR corps.
