Do you think Coughlin's future is dependant on NYG making the playoffs
Coughlin's future
The Giants are 7-4 and tied for Philly for the division lead.
Once again the Giants have started well and are hitting trouble in the back half of the season (though hopefully we will over come them)
I had a thought on Coughlin's future with the team. Next year is the last year of his deal and the Giants never let a coach go into the last year of his deal, so either Coughlin will be extended or fired.
Do you think Coughlin's future with the team will depend on NYG making the playoffs? and Why?
If so we likely will have to win the division
Here is the divisional race as it stands
Division Leaders
East: Philadelphia 7-4
North: Chicago 8-3
South: Atlanta 9-2
West: St Louis 5-6
Wild Card Race
New Orleans 8-3
Green Bay 7-4
NY Giants 7-4
Tamp Bay 7-4
It is going to be real tight

I voted yes
I do think Coughlin's future in New York is dependent on making the playoffs.
The team has gotten off to quick starts, but have not been able to consistently continue it into the back half of the season. The fact we are still having issues with fundamentals is also a concern.
Coughlin is certainly a quality coach, but I think Reese and co will think it is time for a change (if we don't make the playoffs), particularly with the strong range of candidates around.

Re: Coughlin's future
I voted maybe. Its still a few games to early. I think we go into these next two very winnable games win and then beat the eagles in a rematch to lock up the division. Although a retirement is likely (he'll be 65 next season) I think an extension is more likely. Ideal situation, we let his contract run out.
But for conversation sake lets say Coughlin losses the majority of the games remaining much like last season. The coaching staff obviously gets the axe. There are a number of guys I would love to see coach the Giants. Some the Giants wouldn't consider while others fit perfectly.
Its just a matter of what we do in the coming weeks and how Coughlin feels. We may go to the superbowl win it and he may retire. Who knows?
Side Note: If we do lose the remainder of the games, I know Coughlins job shouldn't be the only one on the line. Reese should have to face the music as well. Continually ignoring the LB position is not just Coughlins doing.

I actually think we will go ok down the stretch and beat the eagles for the NFC East.
I think if the Giants don't make the playoffs something will have to give.
We have good talent that has flashed on both sides of the ball, but it is time to get more consistent performances. It is frustrating to look so good one week and aweful the next, we are far too hot and cold.
I agree that Reese deserves some scrutiny, but I think Coughlin deserves to be the first casualty. I am pretty sure Coughlin is not who Reese would have prefered.

Re: Coughlin's future
I voted no based solely on the question you asked.
If the Giants show up and play every week for the coach but miss the play-offs with a winning record, then Coughlin would likely stick around.
If the Giants have a collapse much like last season, then probably not.
I don't question Coughlin's coaching strategies but sometimes question those he hires or keeps around too long.
Let's also not forget how many injuries this team deals with on a yearly basis. Considering some of the game day rosters he's been dealt, he's not doing that bad of a job.
Of course, all teams deal with injuries, but somehow I feel we might lead the league in that category at many times.
These last 5 games will tell us a lot about this team's leadership and desire.
I believe Coughlin finally has his type of players in there now.
Tuck and Rolle have stepped up and have become vocal leaders and leaders by example.
As long as them two stay healthy the rest of the season, I believe we stand a chance.

Re: Coughlin's future
I think most of his coaching staff are quite skilled.
I will give Reese and Coughlin credit, they do bring talent in and is patient giving players time to develop.
I am not sure Coughlin and Reese are entirely on the same page. For example, I wanted Parcells to be hired as GM after Accorsi, you can be pretty sure they would be very much on the same page.
What I find very furstrating is Coughlin's focus on Running the Ball, stopping the run, turnovers and special teams.
We continue to have issues in all these areas over Coughlin's tenure.
I think generally it comes back to Reese and where we have drafted or the kind of free agents we have brought in.
We have not drafted O-line, RB, DT or LB early for some time (only Beatty, Sintim and Joseph) in six years under Reese and all of these are second rounders in the last 2 years.
How is this helping to Run the ball and stop the run in the physical style of Giants football that we want to run.

Re: Coughlin's future
Well Pete, Parcells still wanted to coach when we brought Reese in so hiring him was kind of outta the question.
I also have to disagree on a few other things. Just a few seasons ago we had the leagues best Oline and running game. And we were top ten against the run. Now look at this season we are ranked 9 defending the run and ranked 6th as a rushing offense. Not to mention we put a lot of money in Canty as a run stuffer and again drafting one in the 2nd of this past draft.
Now turnovers and special teams have been somewhat of a problem. I do agree there. Its getting a consistent effort in those areas that seems very hard for us to do. Turnovers you can look right at Eli Manning. Last year and so far this season Eli has the most turnovers of all QBs.

Nope I disagree here. It was widely reported that Parcells wanted to GM (the exact kind of role he later got in Miami).
Coughlin's main philosophy is to have a physical run the ball and stop the run philosphy. Look at the talent we have added and lost at the various positions. I don't think there has been an appropriate investment of talent on the offensive line, defensive line and linebacking corps.
But thats a moot point anyways.
I do think that Reese sees things a little different to Coughlin.

Re: Coughlin's future
I will make one correction, I think Reese has improved, but the issues with the front seven started under Ernie Accorsi.
However Parcells was seriously interested in the GM job (and even met with Giants brass).
from http://www.ask.com/wiki/Bill_Parcells
On January 9, the Newark Star Ledger reported through anonymous sources that Parcells had contacted the New York Giants about their available General Manager position, but the Giants are reportedly not interested in Parcells' services. Parcells, the next day, quickly refuted any interest in the Giants GM position stating, "There is absolutely nothing to it. Whoever said it is a liar."

True, but Parcells did fly to new New York suddenly at the time. Sure it won't be confirmed, but you would have to be pretty naive to think it didn't happen.

Naive? I think its more wishful thinking on your part.
Also he could "suddenly fly to New York" all he wants our HQ's in New Jersey. And New Jersey has its own airport in Newark, NJ.
