Re: The Rookies: My Take (complete)
I don't agree with Thomas to some degree.
I think he will be an awefull lot better than many people think.
Going into the 2007 college season, many had him as the top CB in college football.
Thomas is a physical CB who can hit like a safety, plus he has very good coverages kills and he has good ball skills
He has had some injury problem, but has worked through those, he doesn't quite have the blazing speed that the othe CBs had and he plays at USC where he was badly overshadowed by the other defensive stars. He could likely also transition to FS if the front office wanted him to.
Alot of fans and experts consider him a solid ok pick. But I think he will be very good for the Giants.

Kehl's done. It'll be a mad rush to camp, that's for sure.

I think you are a little harsh on Goff; I think he could also play SLB or WLB in our LB system.
He is the heir apparant at MLB, but he has decent speed and athleticm.
Pierce isn't that old (turns 30 in Oct) and never had great speed to start with (arguably he has lost a step); His leadership skils are very important. Pierce is under contract through 2010. But with base salaris of 4,350,000 in 2009 and 4,750,000 in 2010, Pierce's contract could very easily exceed his value; he could become a cap casualty anytime after this season, particularly if Reese thinks Clark and Goff will be adequate replacements ( combined their contracts are under half of Pierce's)
Goff is a guy who could push Pierce alot sooner than people realise; in fact if Pierce gets hurt over the latter half of the season, he could have a tough time getting it back, although Clark will also be in the mix.
Chase Blackburn's roster spot could hinge on whether Kiwanika plays SLB or DE

Who knows. If Piere gets injured, no sure thing who gets the job back.
Just wait till this Henderson update. Gonna be nuts.

I am really curious to see what you think about Henderson.

Re: The Rookies: My Take (complete)
I think you are being harsh on Henderson.
He is a bit of a project and will take time, but I think he has very similar talent to Tuck and could be used in similar ways.
You touched on a good point, this is a guy who can get to the QB.
I am not going to put limits on what he can do; after all the Giants have done very well with day 2 picks in recent years: Diehl, Bradshaw, Boss, Johnson, Cofield etc.
I could see Henderson getting on the field a little earlier than some expect. I could easily see Henderson working his way into our 4-Aces packages. Umenyiora and Kiwanuka on the outside with Henderson and Tuck inside. If anything that is a potentially nastier that the package than we had last year; all of them have genuine speed and quickness.
In many ways it reminds me of another DE the Giants plucked from obscurity in 2003 - he wasn't on other team's radars or even invited to the combine, but he turned out ok. The big difference is that Reese held his cool whilst Accorsi pulled the trigger alot earlier.
Lets give Henderson some time and let him show is what he can do. I think he will pleasantly surprise us. after all the Giants do know about quality DEs

Harsh? I don't think so. Henderson isn't a huge prospect with starting talent. Hell take time to develop, no doubt. I do think he is a project but I think he can contribute this year.
Not right away, but during the year. I think he'll surprise people. Hence, he's the surprise pick. I don't think I was too harsh at all.

I actually thought yhat you gave Henderson too much credit D. lol
Either way, I'll be happy if he contributes as much as you think he can.

Maybe I misinterpreted it, I guess it is more to do with putting arbitary limits on what he can or cannot do if and when he develops. I suspect your article was considering itself more with the shorter term; whereas I was looking at long term. I suspect we are both looking at it from different perspectives thats all.
"He's not a starter and he'll never be Justin Tuck" - I am not sure I agree.
He is a small school guy that the Giants think has plenty of talent and ability. All I am saying is give him time to develop and show what can do on the field before we put arbitary limits on what he can or cannot do. Who knows what could be in store? The Giants do seem to do well out of late round draft picks and undrafted players.
I will readily admit that Henderson was plucked from left field; but so have David Diehl, Gibril Wilson and Kevin Boss in recent years.
I think he could end up being very similar to Tuck and wouldn't be surprised if he ended (at some point) up joining Tuck playing DT in our 4 aces packages. Of course he has to win a roster spot first.
Anyways great set of articles, awesome work yet again Brian
