Here are My Current Thoughts for turning around the Giants in 2011.

Team Assessment

Offense
Much of our problems were due to a failure to establish a consistent offense. We have the talent, but execution has consistently let us down.

Defense
The defense did well for most of the season; I am willing to attribute much of the late slump to lack of talent, particularly at CB where teams were able to exploit our secondary with quality speed receivers, in many cases I think our safeties were caught out trying to cover up ordinary talent at CB.

Special Teams
Our Special teams is bad, we need an overhaul here. Quinn has had his chance.

Solution

I would prefer a new coach with new philosphy, but only if it is an upgrade over Coughlin. The only coach who I think is an upgrade (and has similar philosophies) is Bill Cowher, otherwise we should stay with the current system.

New Head Coach - Bill Cowher

New Offensive Coordinator - Charlie Weis

New Defensive Coordinator - Pepper Johnson

This will require a move to a 3-4 Defense

Free Agency

Resign

WR Steve Smith - [Substantial contract]

OLB Matthias Kiwanuka - [Moderate contract]

WR Domenik Hixon- [Cheap contract]

RB Ahmad Bradshaw- [Moderate contract]

DT Barry Cofield - [Moderate contract]

TE Kevin Boss - [Moderate contract]

S Deon Grant - [Moderate contract]

S Michael Johnson - [Cheap contract]

Free Agents from other teams

TE Zack Miller (Raiders) [substanial contract]
A good all round TE, a reliable receiver and blocker

CB Richard Marshall (Panthers) [substanial contract]
A physical all round CB with good speed and quickness

LB David Harris (Jets) [substanial contract]
An explosive, punishing tackler we ideally need to anchor our defense who is also experienced in the 3-4. It means Boley, Goff and Dillard will compete for the other starting LB spot.

*all contracts relative to position.

Positional Moves

Tuck to 3-4 DE
Sure Tuck is a better 4-3 LDE, but he can be effective as a 3-4 DE in a similar fashion to Justin Smith or Darnell Dockett or for those with a longer memory Bruce Smith or Leonard Marshall.

Umenyiora and Pierre-Paul to OLB
Both of these guys will be able to make this transition well. If anything having more space will make more use of their exceptional speed and athleticim

Draft

20. RB Mark Ingram, Alabama (5-10, 215, 4.48)

53. CB Brandon Burton, Utah (6-0, 185, 4.45)

86. NT Kenrick Ellis, Hampton (6-5, 340, 5.05)

119. NT/DE Sione Fua, Stanford (6-2, 306, 5.25)

181. NT/DE Ian Williams, Notre Dame (6-2, 305, 5.20)

Notes

1. This is based off the draft order from thehuddlereport

2. I have assumed a combination of best value at need positions at each pick.

Notes

1. I am assuming a new collective bargaining agreement is in place by March 4

2. I expect all our players to check out medically

3. I did look at upgrading the offensive line, but I think the front office like the talent we have at the moment and there is plenty of upside for the future.
At Center we have O'Hara plus Koets who has played well plus Seubert

At Tackle we have McKenzie who has had a great year plus Andrews (who I think the Front Office would like to give a shot at earning the starting LT job, plus Beatty and Meredith who has as much developmental ability as any of the OTs in the draft (plus Diehl).

Guard we have 3 legitimate starters plus Boothe who has performed well and Petrus.

We have good young talent developing behind every starting spot, all of whom will be much better next year.

My 2 cents...

Offense - I don't see a HC change as necessary. The Giants need a solid TE and better depth at WR. Bradshaw needs to make a Tiki-like change to stop the fumbling.

Defense - The draft or FA should focus on upgrading the LBs. Long the strength of the Giants' D, the LBs are now the weakest group. Adding depth and speed at CB and S.

Specials - Success here is often a function of coaching. However, you can't say enough about players like Tyree. Perhaps a couple of Tyrees could do the trick.

My latest thoughts (post redskins game)

We do need a solid all round TE - my pick is Zach Miller

We also need a RB who can made things happen, Bradshaw really dropped off down the stretch - he could be back for the right price, but not a certainty

CB/S this is a real need. I actually like the idea of moving Thomas to safety and bringing in a couple of good corners. One a free agent like Richard Marshall and one through the draft.

LB we do need to upgrade here. I would like to see a free agent; top of my list - Barrett Ruud, Paul Poslunzy and AJ Hawk
