Should the Giants bring back Plax? Empty Should the Giants bring back Plax?

An interesting article from insidefootball.com

Should the Giants Bring Back Plax?

I’ve been following the talk about former Giants' WR Plaxico Burress, and where he might end up once he's released from prison.

I’m not surprised that GM Jerry Reese would say that they would explore that option – after all, Reese explores every option when it comes to personnel.

Would bringing Burress bqack make sense? Where there was a time that I didn’t think that Burress would be back in a Giant uniform given the influx of young talent the Giants have at receiver, the injury to Steve Smith changed my opinion.

Smith, remember, is facing a significant rehab period after having microfracture surgery late in the season (in mid-December), and depending on which report you believe, might not be ready for the start of the 2011 season. And even if he is ready, there are more question marks as to when Smith, who reportedly won't be cleared to run until June, will be like his old pre-injury self.

Enter Burress. Assuming he retained knowledge of much of the Giants' playbook and that he kept himself in shape, I see no reason why he couldn’t come back into the Giants system. He’d have fresh legs (despite the fact that he’d be 34 years old) and there would be no reason why he couldn't contribute for a year or two, while Smith, who I believe the Giants will sign to a one-year contract once the labor situation is straightened out, continues his recovery.

I know that there were reports of some discord between Burress and head coach Tom Coughlin, but I think you would have to give Burress the benefit of the doubt here. His playing by his own rules finally bit him hard, and I would think that perhaps spending time in prison finally drove home the message that Coughlin’s fines and suspensions couldn’t.

For all the warts he might have, Coughlin doesn't seem to be a man who holds a grudge, not at the expense of his football team. I think that if Burress were brought back, that the two men would have a heart-to-heart talk to where Coughlin would need to be convinced that Burress has changed his ways. Then and only then would I see the head coach buying into the concept.

It’s much too soon to say if the Giants are indeed serious about bidding for Burress when he gets out of prison. However, there appears to be enough to support the move, assuming both sides could work out an agreement and parameters for a reunion.

I could see him on a one year deal.

Steve Smith is coming of late year microfracture surgery. It is not certain if he will be ready to go at the start of next year and it can take time to recover.

Plus Nicks, Barden and Hixon are all coming back from serious injury.

I am not sure I am in favour of bring Plax back, but I guess it is a low risk/high reward thing

It's not necessary to sign Plax. I guess anything is possible though.

Smith might have a longer rehab than expected but likely has enough connection with Eli to start week 1 without an intensive training camp.

I really like our wr depth.
-We have Smith, Nicks, and Manningham. All very good imo.
-We should get back Hixon and Hagan. Good third wr options.
-Barden, Thomas, Clayton aren't too bad. Bring them back to camp and see if they can impress. Plus Thomas and Clayton showed a little fire on special teams.
- Victor Cruz is certainly worth giving another shot to.
- Travis Beckum is a receiving option. His route running can only get better with another year under him.
