Coughlin's tenure.
There has been a bit of talk that Coughlin needs to get into the playoffs to keep his job.
I guess there is some merit to that thinking, the front office haven't committed to Coughlin long term and three years of missing the playoffs will hurt considering the expectations.
But personally I don't think there is an issue as I am very hopefull that we will be back in the playoffs next year.
But I guess the flip side is that it should be no shock with some of our needs (eg LB) and these haven't been adequately addressed.
Mr Reese, consider yourself on notice. The teams issues must be addressed this offseason.

I think we both agree some here Pete.
There's a lot more to look at than just the teams record when it comes to firing a coach.
You have to look at the team as a whole. Did they lose key players, do they have good players to begin with, assistant coaching changes every year, excessive turnovers by players can also kill a season.
Missing the play-offs again would stink for sure but what if this team goes 10-6 again. Would you fire a coach with two 10-6 records in a row? I wouldn't.
Sometimes you just have to catch a break much like the Jets did.
Sometimes you just have to get hot at the right time. Much like the Giants did in '07.
Are these players ready to learn brand new plays and a whole new system? That is basically what would happen by bringing in a new coach. In my mind your first year is usually a wash just by trying to get things down.
Then your second year is usually a big wonder? did we hire the right guy? Did we get ourselves a Ray Handley or Bill Parcells?
Coughlin is a "Parcells guy". He has the attention of his role players. (Eli, Tuck, Diehl, etc...) and has only had one losing season since he's been here. And that was in his first season. Not too bad considering the Giants were in shambles coming off a 4-12 season at that time.
Coughlin should retire a Giant unless this teams completely flops or he loses control in the meantime.
Here's an idea.
Reese, Go get us some linebackers like the Steelers have and then let's see how far we can go.

Re: Coughlin's tenure.
here is an interesting piece.
I had thought that John Mara had mentioned immediately after the season that Coughlin would be given a 1 year extension, perhaps that hasn't actually happened yet?

From ESPNNewYork.com's Ohm Youngmisuk:
New York Giants CEO John Mara said he has had some preliminary talks with Tom Coughlin's agent concerning the head coach's contract.
Coughlin is entering the final year of his contract but Mara has said that Coughlin will return as head coach. Mara says the team has not entered serious talks yet concerning Coughlin's contract but plans on doing so in the future.

Re: Coughlin's tenure.
I'm only for bringing in someone else if we miss the playoffs and there is a better option available. We've talked about Cowher before and I think he would classify. But with that said, I have faith Coughlin can get it done. . . For now.

You got it in one, only fire someone if it is warranted and you can upgrade.
Cowher's an option for sure, but Fewell probably would be as well.
