Giant thoughts - if extenstion of existing labour deal Empty Giant thoughts - if extenstion of existing labour deal

Post  Big_Pete Thu Mar 03, 2011 6:18 pm

These thoughts assume that there is an extension for the current labour situation whilst a new CBA is sorted for 2012. The big change will be a lot less free agents available and the RFA tenders will come into play.

Tendered RFAs
I think three of our tendered RFAs have a good chance of being signed elsewhere. My guess is:

  • Seattle signs WR Steve Smith - Giants get pick 57 as compensation
  • Indianapolis signs DT Barry Cofield - Giants get pick 53 as compensation
  • Washington signs RB Ahmad Bradshaw - Giants get pick 41 as compensation

The destinations could chance, but I expect all three will be popular. The others should all be back.

Free Agent Signings
  • CB Nnamdi Asomugha, Oakland
Upgrading the secondary is Reese's priority and does it big time. Perhaps a surprise move, but not unlike when we were seriously in the running for Haynesworth).
  • MLB Barrett Ruud, Tampa Bay
The stud anchor inside to lead our defence.
  • OLB Rocky McIntosh, Washington
A good, experienced 4-3 OLB and big upgrade at SLB.
  • FB Vonta Leach, Houston
A stud blocking FB to pave the way for Jacobs.
  • S Reed Doughty, Washignton
A decent backup safety with some experience.

Besign
  • Deon Grant
Keep the guy who did well last year. Grant could also spilt playing time with Phillips.
  • Chase Blackburn
Special teams is ordinary, but build on your best guys
  • Dave Tollefson
A solid DE and insurance for Kiwi's health, also a good special teamer.

Cuts
  • Shaun O'Hara
  • Madison Hedgecock

Trade
With three quality DEs and Kiwanuka's injury (although he should be fine), Reese is not going to commit to Kiwi more than a cheap one year deal. I don't think teams will give a 2nd round pick for Kiwi, but I think Reese would trade him for a 3rd rounder, possibly to a team like Atlanta (#91).

Draft
With the limited free agency, the Giants may have to be aggressive to target their needs, fortunately they have some ammunition to be creative and target specific players at need positions.

Giants trade 19, 53 to Houston for 11
Giants trade Clint Sintim, 57 to New England for 33

  • 11. WR Julio Jones, Alabama - With Smith gone, we ideally need stud WR
  • 33. C Stefen Wisniewski, Penn State - After LB, Center is our biggest need.
  • 41. T Ben Ijalana, Villanova - A quality RT to groom as McKenzie's replacement.
  • 52. DT Stephen Paea, Oregon St - A quality DT to work into the rotation replacing Cofield
  • 83. CB Brandon Burton, Utah - A decent developmental CB with good physical tools.
  • 91. RB Shane Vereen, California - A very under rated physical RB who complements Jacobs and Ware
  • 115. LB Ross Holman, Ohio St - An under rated, physical, instinctive LB.
  • 180. CB Cortez Allen, Citadel - An decent CB to add depth and special teams.
  • 211. DT Chris Neild, West Virginia - An under rated DT who could push Bernard for his roster spot.

Potential Roster

  • QB: Eli Manning, Sage Rosenfels
  • RB: Brandon Jacobs, DJ Ware, Shane Vereen
