Brandon Jacobs open to idea of 'fair' paycut
Brandon Jacobs now says he's open to the idea of taking a "fair" paycut this offseason.
Jacobs will bridle if the Giants ask him to accept an "astronomical amount," but he's open to doing something reasonable once the CBA is settled. Jacobs and free agent Ahmad Bradshaw have questioned the Giants' ability to keep both backs this season. The backfield stands a much greater chance of staying intact if Jacobs does restructure. Coach Tom Coughlin has suggested that Jacobs merits a larger role in 2011.

This is great news, hopefully there can be some reasonable arrangement.

“Nothing is going to happen until the CBA stuff gets done,” Jacobs said. “And if they happen to ask to take the pay cut and it is an unnecessary amount, then absolutely not. But other than that, if it is something that can be done, then yes, then whatever is going to get the team going and winning.
“But once you take off an astronomical amount, that is not going to happen. I’d be open to it as long as it is fair to me.”
Jacobs just redeemed himself in my eyes. Now do the Giants offer a pay cut? No, thats not right IMO. I'm still for letting Bradshaw walk and drafting a back to form a new pair with our bruiser.

I agree, Jacobs has earned more respect from me.
Sure the situation has to be right, but at least he is open to the idea.
It means there is a chance we could keep both or keep Jacobs as the starter and bring in a RB to team with Jacobs and Ware.

To me the signing of Ware is insurance for the rookie we plan on drafting. Just incase the rookie doesn't turn out, we know what we have in Ware. He's capable of a #2 role, just wouldn't bet on it. He's also a pretty good specials player also.

Agreed, I could see a RB being selected in the draft, most likely rounds 2-4

It's not a great chance but there's a chance Ingram makes it to us at 19 if thats the case I could see us pulling the trigger. Other wise I definitely agree somewhere between 2-4 would be ideal.

If Ingram makes it to 19, I do think there is a decent chance he ends up here. I am not sure if Reese would consider trading up for him, but that is a possibility.

I think it's possible we still go RB. We could get a steal with someone like Jordan Todman in round 3.

Seriously there are quite a few that would be good options
Mark Ingram, Mikel Leshoure, Ryan Williams, Demarco Murray, Shane Vereen, Jordan Todman, and Taiwan Jones are all good options, and there are certainly others.
It all depends on who you prefer and where they are available. The RB talent is really good this year, I could even see us getting two if a quality talent was available later than expected.
There will be good talent available in rounds 3 and 4

Re: Brandon Jacobs open to idea of 'fair' paycut
There is no need for Jacobs to take a pay cut. He signed a very reasonable deal at the time of his last contract.
I don't think the Giants would even ask him to anyways.
That would be a slap in the face and fuel for the fire if Jacobs doesn't have an impressive start to the season this coming year.

$6.5 million is alot of money for a RB. His production last year (and the year before) doesn't warrant that kind money.
I believe Jacobs will need a reasonable pay cut

I read that he was going to make 4.6 in 2011 and 4.9 in 2012.
Jacobs production in 2009 was awful but what was so bad last year besides not enough touches.
Three of the past four seasons he had 5 yds a carry or better. That's the number I look at the most.
I could care less if a player has a 1,500 yard season but only average 3.5 a carry.

I was looking at his total cap number, you have his base salary.
The bottom line is that both of the last two seasons, Jacobs has under whelemed and not performed anywhere near the level the Giants (and his contract) expect.
Let's be honest, Jacobs has just under the kind of deal that franchise running backs get. For that you should be expecting 1000yd seasons as a bare minimum.
Having said that, I do think Jacobs could be very productive, but we need to upgrade the Oline, get a quality blocking TE and ideally upgrade FB with a true throwback style bulldozer. Then you won't see Jacobs getting caught in the backfield and line of scrimmage so much and see more of Jacobs punishing the linebackers and breaking into the next level.
If I was Jacobs for example, I could see it being reasonable to drop the salary to maybe $3m if the Giants could bring in guys like Matt Spaeth and Vonta Leach; particularly if there were incentives in the contract that I could earn with quality play.

Re: Brandon Jacobs open to idea of 'fair' paycut
Jacobs played extremely well in 2010. It was his mouth that was getting him into trouble. His lone "bad" season was 2009. And that was an injury plagued year for him. Other wise, Jacobs has been very consistent for us. I couldn't ask for much more from him.
Ideally I would like to replace the entire crew of RBs but you just can't do that without addressing other needs. I think we should move on from Bradshaw and run the shit out of Jacobs. Draft a guy early and we have Ware as insurance. Than trade or release Jacobs after the 2011 season.
Pete, I like Spaeth, he's a very good blocker but so is Bear. I like the idea of moving Bear back to TE and bringing in a good FB. I still want Owen Schmitt from the Eagles. With that said I don't think any of that is necessary for Jacobs to be productive. We need to figure out the Center position more than anything.

I agree that Bear could be the guy as a blocking TE.
Then again I wouldn't be hugely surprised if we move away from the traditional full back role and use more H-Back style options.
I don't mind Owen Schmidt at all, I think he would be a good pick up.
I also think we can move on from Bradshaw, I think other teams will offer him more money.
Agreed we need to fix the Oline.
I am not sure on Andrews, Reese expects his back to be an ongoing problem so $3.5m is a lot for a part time player.
I wouldn't mind seeing Seubert start at centre while a rookie develops.
