Whether its through the draft of Free Agency who are some players you'd like to see in Blue that have a realistic shot at being here.

FREE AGENTS:

Tommie Harris - When we drafted Eli Manning and traded our future I was among the few that season that wanted Tommie Harris. I can have my wish now because he's been released by the Bears after two unproductive seasons. He started strong making the probowl in 05, 06, and 07. At just 27 years old I think he has plenty more to offer with a fresh start. I'd love to see that here.

Vernon Gholston - is intriguing because he tore up the combine and has just been a major disappointment for the Jets. I think a move back to the 4-3 as a DE will do him well. Might never be a great player but he's only 24 and seems like a good gamble.

Matt Roth - Played DE at Iowa and was very productive. Converted to OLB in the pros and made the switch well. A very good effort guy who could replace Kiwi if we lose him in FA.

DRAFT:

Mark Herzlich - Exceptional player and person, if we come away with him I don't care who else we draft.

Here is my current list

Free Agents

MLB Barrett Ruud
OT Doug Free
TE Matt Spaeth
FB Vonta Leach
S George Wilson

Draft

CB Brandon Burton, Utah

C Stefan Wisniewski, Penn St

ILB Ross Homan, Ohio St

OLB Colin McCarthy, Miami (fl)

RB Shane Vereen, California

WR Greg Little, North Carolina

TE - Luke Stocker, Tennessee

I am really liking Homan and McCarthy as day 2 LB options - they seem to be similar players to Jon Beason and Jon Vilma.

I am not sure on Herzlich at the moment, the 4.9 40 at the combine killed him. We need to add speed at LB. Herzlich has excellent instincts and leadership. I want to see if he rebounds at his pro day (I hope he does).

I also wanted Tommie Harris in 2004 (he was my number 4 guy after Eli (without trade), Larry Fitzgerald and Sean Taylor). I didn't realise he was released, but if we could get him he would be ideal in our system to replace Cofield.

Thats exactly why watching these players actually play football is so important. You can read draft profiles and watch combine numbers all you want but you won't have a clue how these guys actually play football. Herzlich is a football player. His intangibles and instincts are unmatched in this years class. Never did I think he was going to the combine and blow it away and neither did the teams scouting him. He plays with game speed. Compare him to Martez Wilson. Wilson ran a great 40 time but his instincts suck. He isn't a football player, he's a great athlete. Watch him play, his speed doesnt translate to the field because it takes him too long to read the play. Herzlich diagnoses the play very quickly.

I agree that it isn't all about numbers and play on the field is paramount (Herzlich does have great instincts), but having said that there is a level of speed you expect from LBs who have more range.

A 4.92 is slower than many D-linemen and Herzlich was expected to run around 4.65-4.70; at the moment I would say Herzlich's stock has slipped a couple of rounds in value.

However it could be he just had a bad day and I hope he runs better at his pro day.

Remember Manningham had a slow combine 40 and came back with a very good pro day time.

Don't get me wrong, play on the field is the paramount assessment of a prospect, but abilities are confirmed or dispelled by the workout numbers.

Also remember the 40 time is not used in isolation, I want to see his 10, 20 yards spilts, his 3 cone and short and long shuttle times.

Yea you dont have to remind me, I'm not the one who mentioned the 40 time to begin with. Pierce ran a horrible 40, and he had a great career on instincts and smarts. Thats what I'm talking about. These combine numbers are used for tiebreakers on prospects and to help some of these lesser known guys get noticed.

No Biggie. I'm really anxious to see where Tommie Harris goes. I'd love to see him as a Giant.

Casey Mathews is another player I like.

I like Matthews as well, I am not sure he adds the speed we need, but he is a good MLB prospect.

I hope we sign Harris, he would be ideal here (and much cheaper than Cofield), worse case scenario he is a specialist pass rushing DT.

The other factor with Herzlich is that he probably isn't 100% back from his cancer yet.

I think thats the major issue with where he's drafted. The cancer can come back at anytime. So does a team want to invest in that. . . For a 3rd round pick I think its well worth the gamble. He's a late 1st early 2nd had he never gone through this Cancer deal. Some teams may still value him as a early second others may have removed him completely from their board.

The same day we have to scratch Hawk off the list we have to scratch off D'Qwell Jackson as well. He just re-uped with the Browns on a 1 year extension.

George Wilson re-upped with the Bills as well.

Otogwe and Sanders are off the market as well, although neither was a likely option here.

Free Agents:
Stephen Tulloch
Barrett Rudd 1 of those MLB would be great
Manny Lawson ( he played in a 3-4 in San Fran, but can convert to the strongside in 4-3)
Draft:
1st Rounders:
Mike Pouncey G Florida ( he struggled at C, but also have to give him the benefit of the doubt that Florida is a gimmicky shotgun offense and he was playing with a inexperienced QB)
Ryan Kerrigan DE Purdue also wouldn't mind Cameron Jordan, I know we drafted a DE last year but, Osi could be leaving at the end of the year.
Tyron Smith if we go OT
2nd Round:
Quan Sturdivant
Rodney Hudson if we don't go G in round one
3rd Round
Joe Lefeged S Rutgers
4th Round
Shareece Wright CB USC
6th Round
Richard Lapham OT BC
7th Round
Charlie Gantt TE Michigan St

I want to add Lee Ziemba OL to the list. Reminds me a lot of David Diehl. He's a Giant type offensive lineman. I think he can play 4 of the 5 OL positions. I would really like to see him compete with Beatty for our future LT/RT positions but I think he could start immediately at LG.

I like Ziemba as well.

I will also add Danny Watkins to the list. He is ready to start right away at Guard and I think he could potentially play any position along the oline.

I could see Watkins starting at LG with Diehl at LT and Seubert/O'Hara at center, whilst he develops as the eventual starter at center.

My only real problem with Zeimba is his footwork and I wouldn't draft him higher than the 4th round surprisingly.

Watkins will be a 27 year old rookie, thats a huge turn off for me.

I think Watkins turns 27 during the season. Sure I prefer younger guys, but with the way free agency is, you usually have players around 4 years.

three other players I am intrigued by

Mark Ingram - if he is there he could be a steal

Kyle Rudolph - it all depends on where he goes, if he slips to our pick in the second round I think it is a strong chance. He isn't a stud receiving TE (which is popular in the NFL) and there is very good talent at more premium positions (OL, DL, CB) plus lots of teams could reach for QBs.

Jurell Casey - He isn't getting a lot of hype, but I really like Casey as a 4-3 NT prospect in rounds 3-4

Thomas Howard. A realisitic option at linebacker.

Mark Ingram the Giants may have a shot at.

Robert Sands. For some reason I really like this safety.
