Smith's recovery prognosis
5:00PM ET
Steve Smith | Giants
There's been a healthy heaping of reporting and speculation on the whereabouts of Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith whenever the 2011 season begins, but the Steve Smith that played for the New York Giants in 2010 is also a person of interest this offseason for a different reason.
As the younger Smith is set to hit some form of free agency -- as yet to be determined following the lockout being lifted -- he's also recovering from microfracture surgery. Though there have been some encouraging reports on the wideout's rehabilitation, his prognosis for being healthy in time for training camp remains unclear. And according to a report from Pro Football Weekly, it's possible that Smith could be put on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list for training camp.
The PFW report is framed within a discussion on Victor Cruz, whose hold on a roster spot is tenuous. Cruz's chances of making the roster improve if Smith is placed on the PUP, but there's also a possibility that the Giants could add another veteran free agent if they don't believe they'll get a lot out of Smith in 2011.

Re: Smith's recovery prognosis
I wouldn't be surprised if Smith started on PUP, he is likely going to need some time to get back to where he was (and may not get there this season). I am not expecting too much from Smith this season; if he can get healthy and productive that is a bonus imho)
However, I think it unlikely we look at free agents, we have Manningham, Barden and Jernigan in the wings.
I guess if we could get someone like Braylon Edwards at a reasonably price, it is worth a look. We know Reese isn't going to close any doors.
I actually think playing Jernigan in the slot this year (Smith's normal position) was a factor in drafting him.
