Game’s top fullback Leach lists teams on his radar
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 20, 2011, 10:28 AM EDT
APWhen making free agent lists, no one makes a “best available” fullback run down.
But Texans fullback Vonta Leach
is no normal fullback; he’s respected enough by his peers that NFL
Network’s Top 100 list had Leach in the top 60. (While Leach is a
beast, that high a ranking for any fullback seems a little crazy.)
Houston wants to keep Leach, but it sounds like the eight-year
veteran is interested in seeing what’s out there. Leach told Adam
Schein of SIRIUS NFL Radio (via ESPNNewYork.com) that the “Giants,
Seahawks, and Charger” are on his radar if he winds up leaving Houston.

Vonta Leach has Giants on his list
Vonta Leach has Giants on his list

One of general manager Jerry Reese’s first priorities will be to re-sign Ahmad Bradshaw.
He also has several other key players likely set to become unrestricted free agents such as Steve Smith, Kevin Boss, Barry Cofield and Mathias Kiwanuka.
While linebacker will be the biggest area of need in free agency for the Giants, fullback is another position that the Giants will have to figure out in camp.
Madison Hedgecock played in just four games last season due to injuries. While tight end Bear Pascoe filled in admirably, the Giants have an All-Pro fullback who says he is considering the Giants.
Texans’ FB Vonta Leach told SiriusXM NFL radio that the Giants are on his list if the free agent doesn’t re-sign with Houston.
Our buddy Adam Schein at SiriusXM NFL radio tweeted that Leach says the “Giants, Seahawks, and Chargers are on his radar if he leaves Houston.”
While Leach would be a great addition, the Giants have more pressing needs such as re-signing as many of their own free agents as possible first. They did try to add Leach in 2007 when they signed him to a restricted free agent offer sheet worth $8 million, including $1.6 million in guarantees.

I'd like to save some of the cash it will cost to resign Brashaw, get a cheaper RB to pair with Jacobs like Marion Barber
and bring in Leach who will make all of our RB much more effective

Ironically, out of his 4 listed options, the Giants have a better offensive line than Seattle, Houston or San Diego

I agree....drop Bradshaw, get a cheaper RB (maybe even a rookie free agent) and sign Leach to lead the way for Jacobs and a couple of backups. The O line is solid, and a stud FB can improve the running game tremendously.

I agree with this.
Anyone know if Leach can catch decent for a FB? I assume he can't be any worse than Hedgecock.

We would be on his radar because we had interest just a few years ago. I wouldn't mind getting him but I think we could be smarter with our cap dollars.

I don't think it would be a bad investment at all and very much am in the line of getting a cheaper RB and getting Leach.
