After feedback and further consideration

sure I did one just the other day, but there is a very real chance this could all get under way soon (25 July)

Here is what I would currently like to see happen. Just some small revisions, but enough that it makes a big difference. I really like how this roster would shape up and the style of football we could see on both sides of the ball.

Resign
Steve Smith, Mathias Kiwanuka, Dave Tollefson

Release
Shawn Andrews, Rocky Bernard, Madison Hedgecock

Free Agency Departures
Barry Cofield, Ahmad Bradshaw, Kevin Boss, Kevin Boothe, Chase Blackburn, Gerris Wilkerson, Deon Grant, Michael Johnson

Contracts Reworked
(wth 2011 salaries)

Corey Webster (8.0m), Eli Manning (8.5m), Brandon Jacobs (4.65m), Chris
Canty (5.25m), Michael Boley (3.5m), Shaun O'Hara (3.45m), Sage
Rosenfels (3.0m)

give McKenzie a one year extension, turning much of his 4.3m salary into bonuses

put the veteran $3mil exemption on Jacobs contract.

remember it is expected there will be a very big increase in the cap in 2013 due to increased revenue.

Trade

DE Osi Umenyiora for LB David Hawthorne (Seahawks) and a 2012 3rd round pick

Hawthorne signed on a 1 year deal and the Seahawks have plenty of talent at LB with Curry, Hill and Tatupu (plus drafted KJ Wright). Hawthorne has started two seasons 2009 at MLB (11 games) and 2010 at WLB (16 games) when Tatupu and Hill got hurt, passing 100 tackles in both seasons (223 tackles, 4 sacks, 4 ints, 5 FF and 2 FR) .

Hawthorne would be cheap with his one year 900k deal and weekly 50k roster bonuses, but we could equally sign him to an extension.

Hawthorne is the playmaker we badly need at WLB and which Boley frankly wasn't last year. Hawthorne would slide in at WLB with Boley flipping to SLB. With a better supporting cast at LB, Boley's play could be much improved. Also Sintim could compete with Boley, particularly on early downs.

With Osi's departure, we may be thin at DE. Sintim hasn't made the transition to a 4-3 SLB, put with the addition of Howard there is options to use both Sintim and Tracy as pass rushing DEs.

Free Agents Signed

Major Signing:

LB Stephen Tulloch (Titans)

Tulloch is the stud, athletic playmaking MLB that we badly need. His style of play is a good fit for Fewell's schemes.
Poslunzy is a good fall back option, but like others have said is more of a stop gap rather than a true star.

Moderate Signings:

RB Marion Barber (Cowboys)

A good value RB. Barber is not a breakout start, but he is a very good, physical second RB to rotate with Jacobs. More importantly he looks after the football well. You can be sure Barber would love to punish the Cowboys, and playing behind a better line and a genuine power running game.

FB Vonta Leach (Texans)

Leach is the punishing blocking FB we ideally need. Sure Leach may not be the cheapest option, but we have the room, if we go with more modest options at some positions.
Leach is the reason Arian Foster did so well, this will get the best out of our running game. Getting Jacobs and Barber downhill behind Leach consistently will absolutely punish defenses, particularly as most have geared more towards the pass in recent years.

This gets our power running game back big time, and will really take our offense to the next level. Don't forget Coughlin loves to run the football.
Note: I would love to sign Owen Schmitt, but he is an RFA and I am not sure he will be available.

Pascoe would move back to TE and could see time as the starter with his blocking on early downs. We could use more packages using a H-Back instead of the traditional inline TE.

S Jarrad Page (Patriots)

A good moderately priced option for our 3rd safety spot. Can play either safety position and has decent experience. We need an experienced third safety.

Cheap Signings:

DT Alan Branch (Cardinals)

The biggest thing is how well we replace Cofield. I think Josephis ready to start at NT, allowing Canty to slide over to UT where he will play a one gap system well (don't forget he played a 1 gap system in Dallas). Branch gives us a good veteran run plugger to compete with Joseph.
Remember Coughlin wants to to stop the run first and make teams one dimensional. Canty, Joseph and Branch will be formidable anchors inside and will ensure we can keep blockers of Tulloch and allow him to make plays.
In passing situations we can slot either Austin, Tuck, Kiwanuka or JPP in at UT.

UDFA Signings
CB Kendrick Burney, S Deunta Williams, TE Weslye Saunders

There is one moveto replace Grant that I would prefer to do instead of signing Jarrad Page, but it is a little bit different...

That would be signing Panthers CB Richard Marshall.

Move Terrell Thomas to an Ed Reed style Center-field FS role and move Phillips and Rolle closer to the action. (Both were caught out biting too much in my opinion.

Thomas does have some trouble with quicker WRs, but has excellent instincts and is a very good tackler. I think Thomas is a good CB, but potentially a pro-bowl FS. With Thomas back there teams will be much less
inclined to pass deep.

Naturally Thomas would also play the slot CB role where he excels.

Opposite Webster, Marshall is a solid starter (and stud special teamer) and we can work both Amukamara and Ross into the rotation.

I agree on your releases.

Would like to see us re-sign Boothe though. He has proven you can put him in there and he won't hurt your team.

Signing Leach makes sense of course.

Your running backs we can agree on.

I might even try to re-sign Deon Grant for the right price. Depends on how much other teams are interested.

If we can get Deon back, that would be great, but I am not sure it will happen.

There are a lot of DBs out there who would live to play for nyg and fewell
