Petes' free agency plan - 25 June
still no free agency, so here is another plan
Here is what I would currently like to see happen. Just some small revisions, but enough that it makes a big difference. I really like how this roster would shape up and the style of football we could see on both sides of the ball.
Resign
Dave Tollefson, Deon Grant
Release
Shawn Andrews, Madison Hedgecock
Free Agency Departures
Steve Smith, Matthias Kiwanuka, Barry Cofield, Ahmad Bradshaw, Kevin Boss, Kevin Boothe, Chase Blackburn, Gerris Wilkerson, Michael Johnson
Notes
Contracts Reworked
(wth 2011 salaries)
Corey Webster (8.0m), Eli Manning (8.5m), Brandon Jacobs (4.65m), Chris
Canty (5.25m), Michael Boley (3.5m), Shaun O'Hara (3.45m), Sage
Rosenfels (3.0m)
give Osi Umenyiora a moderate pay rise
give McKenzie a one year extension, turning much of his 4.3m salary into bonuses
put the veteran $3mil exemption on Umneyiora's contract.
remember it is expected there will be a very big increase in the cap in 2013 due to increased revenue.
Free Agents Signed
Major Signings:
LB Stephen Tulloch (Titans)
Tulloch is the stud, athletic playmaking MLB that we badly need. His style of play is a good fit for Fewell's schemes.
Poslunzy is a good fall back option, but like others have said is more of a stop gap rather than a true star.
TE Zach Miller (Raiders)
This is the big offensive signing instead of Steve Smith and it comes down to four factors, Steve Smith is one of the better WRs and will get attention,
we have great depth at WR, TEs are cheaper to sign than WRs and Smith may not be ready to go right away. Miller also dramatically increases our run blocking. Miller can be the reliable receiver that Smith used to be.
Boss has been good, but Miller is a huge upgrade and genuine weapon in his own right (without a good QB or offense he averages 57 rec for 678yds, 3 TDs/ year; with a quality QB like Eli the sky is the limit).
Moderate Signings:
RB Ronnie Brown (Dolphins)
A good value RB. Brown is a productive back and effective receiver out of the backfield, he complements Jacobs well. More importantly he looks after the football well.
FB Vonta Leach (Texans)
Leach is the punishing blocking FB we ideally need. Sure Leach may not be the cheapest option, but we have the room, if we go with more modest options at some positions.
Leach is the reason Arian Foster did so well, this will get the best out of our running game. Getting Jacobs and co downhill behind Leach consistently will absolutely punish defenses, particularly as most have geared more towards the pass in recent years.
This gets our power running game back big time, and will really take our offense to the next level. Don't forget Coughlin loves to run the football.
Note: I would love to sign Owen Schmitt, but he is an RFA and I am not sure he will be available.
Pascoe would move back to TE and could see time as the starter with his blocking on early downs.
LT Matt Light (Patriots)
Light is not the player he used to be, but he can still be a dependable LT and is much better than Diehl (who slides inside). He will compete with Beatty for the starting spot and gives us very good OT depth. This is the signing that makes Shawn Andrews expendable.
UDFA Signings
CB Kendrick Burney, S Deunta Williams
53 Man Roster
Offense (25)
QB - Eli Manning, Sage Rosenfals
RB - Brandon Jacobs, Ronnie Brown, DJ Ware/Da'rel Scott

TE - Zach Miller, Travis Beckum, Bear Pascoe
OT - Kareem McKenzie, Matt Light, Will Beatty, James Brewer
OG - David Diehl, Chris Snee, Rich Seubert, Mitch Petrus
OC - Shaun O'Hara, Adam Koets
Defense (25)

UT - Linval Joseph, Marvin Austin
SLB - Clint Sintim, Adrian Tracy
MLB - Stephen Tulloch, Jon Goff, Greg Jones/Phillip Dillard
WLB - Michael Boley, Jacquain Williams

SS - Kenny Phillips, Deon Grant, Tyler Sash

Special Teams (3)

Notes
- I wanted to resign Smith but think he will get more interest that the Giants can afford. Also Jernigan is an effective slot WR; Beckum and Barden will get bigger roles as well.
- Grant probably has more value here than elsewhere, with the short offseason, better to keep guys that know our system
- Bernard is reportedly healthy and well established in the scheme. I think Joseph may be ready to play UT, he actually has a similar skill set to Ndamukong Suh imho and Joseph was drafted to replace Cofield
- With Kiwanuka gone, if we don't sign a free agent, Sintim and/or Tracy could be used as a pass rushing DE on passing downs if need be.

Re: Petes' free agency plan - 25 June
this kind of thing makes the most sense with the lockout
keep most the guys we can, let players go at positions of strength
We would also likely get 2 or 3 compensation picks next year.
