16 defenders who could be cut before the season

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 21, 2011, 10:41 AM EDT

We wrote the majority of this post Wednesday, before we reported that the new CBA will take measures to protect veterans from becoming cap casualties.

That doesn’t mean teams should spend huge money on players that aren’t worth it. With that in mind, here are 16 defenders that could (or should) be on the chopping block in the coming weeks.

1. Albert Haynesworth, Redskins DT: We have our doubts that anyone will give up a quality draft pick for Haynesworth. If Mike Shanahan continues to hold on out of stubbornness, the Redskins deserve what they get. Just like last year.

2. Nick Barnett, Packers LB: Barnett and someone like Bradie James in Dallas might be the guys most helped by new CBA rules. Barnett is due big money for a possible third inside linebacker, but the team could cut Brandon Chillar to free up some room. We think he has a good chance to stay.

3. Antwan Odom, Bengals DE: Odom is only 29 and a fine pass rusher, but he hasn’t been able to stay healthy.

4. Nate Clements, 49ers CB: No matter what the rules are, it’s fiscal insanity to pay Clements $7.25 million. They’d be better off cutting him and signing a free agent.

5. Terence Newman, Cowboys CB: Newman would probably only get cut if the Cowboys bring in a big-time cornerback like Nnamdi Asomugha or Johnathan Joseph.

6. Chris Gamble, Panthers CB: The new rules should help Gamble because the Panthers are thin at cornerback. Still, he has to show something in camp to be worth $6.24 million in 2011.

7. Amobi Okoye, Texans DL: He doesn’t fit Wade Phillips’ defense no matter what the Texans say. Only 24, another team will give a chance to this top-10 pick. We doubt anyone will trade for him.

8. Chris Hope, Titans S: Due $6.5 million, Hope is a good not great player who has the salary of a superstar. The Titans are very thin at safety, which helps his case.

9. Brian Dawkins, Broncos S: Even though Denver drafted heavy at safety, they value Dawkins’ leadership. Cutting him to save money wouldn’t be a popular move. A re-negotiated contract is possible.

10. Madieu Williams, Vikings S: It appears the Vikings want to keep Williams despite his $5.4 million salary. That doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.

11. Joey Porter, Cardinals LB: The only way the Cardinals could make last year’s signing of Porter worse? Doubling down and paying him big money again. Arizona has the young guys to let him go.

12. Justin Harrell, Packers DL: The Packers could give the former first-rounder one last chance to stay healthy, but we doubt it.

13. Johnny Jolly, Packers DL: He was given his ninth life, and then was caught selling it.

14. Aaron Maybin, Bills LB: It wouldn’t shock us if the No. 11 pick in the 2009 draft was out of the league by next year.

15. Gerald Hayes, Cardinals LB: $4.25 million is too much to pay for just another linebacker.

16. Brandon Chillar, Packers LB: He and Brady Poppinga could get the axe so the Packers can keep Barnett.

24 offensive players that could get cut
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 21, 2011, 3:58 PM EDT

We gave you 16 defensive players that could be cut earlier Thursday. We have even more on offense.

The new CBA should make it easier for teams to retain veterans, but most of these players simply cost too much. They could (or should) be released.

1. Vince Young, Titans QB: It’s rare to see such a talented, productive young quarterback become available. In the right scenario, Young could be a terrific value for some team out there.

2. Kyle Orton, Broncos QB: He’s awfully expensive if he’s going to be a backup. The Broncos should be able to find a trading partner, as Orton has better numbers than many starting quarterbacks out there.

3. Brandon Jacobs, Giants RB: If the Giants re-sign Ahmad Bradshaw, the team could ask Jacobs to take a paycut. Jacobs sounded open to the idea early in the offseason, but has backed off that stance. We’d guess he sticks in the end.

4. Chad Ochocinco, Bengals WR: The time has come. Even if this post causes Ochocinco to whoop my ass. The Bengals could wait for rookie A.J. Green to sign before making the move with Ochocinco.

5. Reggie Bush, Saints RB: The Saints say they want to keep Bush with a renegotiated contract. Bush says he wants to stay in New Orleans. We don’t particularly believe any of it; look for Bush to force his release by not accepting the Saints’ offer. We have our doubts he’ll get a big deal in free agency, but it only takes one team to prove us wrong.

6. Donovan McNabb, Redskins QB: The Redskins will try to trade him, but we highly doubt anyone will bite. The real question: How long will Mike Shanahan drag this out before cutting McNabb?

7. Willis McGahee, Ravens RB: The Ravens wouldn’t mind keeping McGahee as a backup, but not for $6 million. Look for McGahee to force his release rather than take a reduced salary.

8. Bernard Berrian, Vikings WR: We actually think $3.9 million isn’t crazy for Berrian if Sidney Rice leaves, but the team may feel like he needs a fresh start.

9. Marion Barber, Cowboys RB: He was as good as gone, even before the team drafted DeMarco Murray in the third round. It was a great run in Dallas. Barber could make for an interesting backup if he could stay healthy.

10. Steve Slaton, Texans RB: Only three years removed from a rookie season with over 1,600 yards from scrimmage, Slaton is the odd man out in a crowded backfield. Barring injury, we suspect he’ll get cut. We doubt the Texans could get a draft pick for him.

11. Shawn Andrews, Giants T: The Giants will have to reduce Andrews’ huge salary if they want to bring him back for a swing tackle role. His body probably couldn’t handle a starting job.

12. Stacy Andrews, Seahawks OL: The Andrews brothers are the Mannings of possible cap cuts.

13. Ryan Diem, Colts T: The lockout may help Diem’s chances of staying in town for $5.4 million. The Colts haven’t been able to groom their young linemen this offseason.

14. Chris Chambers, Chiefs WR: The Chiefs played Kevin Curtis over Chambers in the playoffs last year.

15. Greg Camarillo, Vikings WR: Even with Berrian and Sidney Rice leaving, $1.7 million is too much for this role player.

16. Derek Anderson, Cardinals QB: You could do worse if looking for a veteran backup, but the Cardinals should dump Anderson quickly because of his salary.

17. Justin Gage, Titans WR: Tennessee has depth at wide receiver, but not quality. $3.5 million is way too much for a guy averaging 24 catches the last two years.

18. Bryant Johnson, Lions WR: The former Cardinal no longer fits after Detroit drafted Titus Young.

19. David Carr, 49ers QB: Jim Harbaugh wants to rehab Alex Smith’s career, not this No. 1 pick.

20. Correll Buckhalter, Broncos RB: A career that lasted longer than most people expected may finally be over.

21. LenDale White, Broncos RB: A career that should have lasted longer may also be done.

22. Antwaan Randle El, Steelers WR: Randle El’s reunion in Pittsburgh was a good story, but he’s no longer necessary with so many quality young options.

23. Limas Sweed, Steelers WR: Neither is Sweed.

24. Jake Delhomme, Browns QB: Grantland.com called Delhomme the least valuable player in the NFL. Don’t be surprised if he lands in Denver.

Nice list

I would really like the Giants to look at Amobi Okoye if Houston releases him

Steve Slaton could be an intriging pick up.

Interesting they are commenting on Chris Gamble and his $6m

a bigger story in my opinion is Corey Webster, who's salary jumps to $8m from $2.75m last year. Is he worth that much money?

I'm starting to wonder if Okoye has the mentality to play in the NFL. He may not be mean enough. Still at his age he's a fine gamble that could pay off first as a rotational player. I'd prefer Tommie Harris but I could settle with Okoye if he gets cut.

Slaton has potential but can't hold onto the ball. I rather not deal with that again unless its for someone special like Reggie Bush.

McGahee, Barber, Portis could all be nice cheap vet backups to Jacobs for a year. If we don't go with a guy like Bush who could be that special threat we could want to find that third down back who can block and catch outta the backfield. All three do that very well. I would throw Ronnie Brown and Cadillac into that mix as well.

The more I think about it, the more I want a solid cheaper RB like Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, Marion Barber, Willis McGahee or Clinton Portis (among others) and address other positions.

I don't think we need to spend as much at DT

if we need a DT I would move Canty to UT and start Joseph at NT with Austin Tuck, JPP and Kiwi slotting in at UT on passing downs. I would get a cheap free agent DT like Alan Branch who can be a decent run plugger to at depth at NT.

The money saved from signing a guy like Harris I would use to bring in a stud FB like Vonta Leach.

Remember Coughlin's priority is to run the ball and stop of run.

I think your twisting it a bit. Coughlin has always stressed building the trenches. Every coach in the league will say that establishing the run and stopping it is priority. Thats just common sense. We're talking about building a well rounded team here with free agent additions not the game plan.

Canty playing 1 gap at 5 tech in a 3-4 defense is completely different than playing at under tackle in a 4-3 defense. Canty is too slow off the line for undertackle.

I think if we don't add a vet like Harris or Okoye its because we keep Benard or sign a cheap FA and we start Austin. We aren't afraid to start rookie DTs, just look at Cofield for example. Only difference Austin didn't play last year. He'll really have to impress in camp for that scenario to play out.

from memory the plan initially was to start Canty at UT with Robbins at NT. But to be fair people said much the same about moving Cofield from NT to UT

If we don't move Canty and start Joseph then Bernard stays

Canty was signed to play NT and Cofield would play Undertackle. Robbins was in the final year of his contract, he was coming off the bench at NT until Canty got hurt, Benard off the bench at the 3-technique. Even with that clear Cofield, although not the fastest off the ball, has a much faster first step than Canty. Canty takes a lot to get moving. When Spags was here, Robbins and Cofield were interchangeable. If anyone said Cofield would struggle they weren't paying attention.

Cofield is a very versatile player, he's been that way since college. Thats why he'll draw a lot of money on the open market but he's one of the better 3-techs in the league because he's very well rounded.

Canty's success comes from the way he uses his hands and reach to his advantage. Very rarely does he let Olineman get to his body. His only real negative is he doesn't get off the ball quickly. Thats not good for UT.

We were spoiled a bit by Robbins. He was Severely underrated. He moved very well for a big man, got off the ball quickly, has a arsenal of pass rush moves, and could anchor against the run as well as anyone. Also, IMO the smartest DT in the league. This dude knew how to play QBs and lineman. Linval Joseph could be the next Fred Robbins if he puts it all together.

There's no guarantee Benard stays. His cap number does not equal his production. We could look anywhere at cheaper options like Harris, Okoye (if released), or even cheaper like Wallace Gilberry, Eric Foster, Derek Landri.

Fewell experimented a lot with our DT's during the Redskins game last year. Go back and watch that. You'll see we got absolutely no quick disruption with our interior hence the reason we drafted Austin. It was obvious if we were to let Cofield walk we would need to bring in a true UT. They had Joseph and Canty on the field at the same time. They had Joseph and Benard on the field at the same time. Neither worked. IMO Joseph is still at least a year away from starting. Right now he's good depth behind Canty, good for rotation, goal line packages, and special teams. It took Robbins 4 years to put it together, It may take Joseph about the same.
