NFL's Back to Business Timeline

Post  Pizan on Mon Jul 25, 2011 7:03 pm

The exact timeline of what comes next isn't completely clear and may be subject to change. But according to two NFL sources briefed on the plan, here is the expected timeline of events this week. This is the timeline that was presented to the player reps on the call, and as always it is subect to change.

TUESDAY:
Team facilities will open for voluntary workouts and classroom instruction for all signed players

Trades will be allowed to be discussed and completed.

10 a.m. - Teams can start signing all rookies - drafted and undrafted - and begin negotiations will ALL free agents. There is expected to be no exclusive negotiating period for teams and their own free agents. They can simultaneously talk to their free agents and those from other teams.

WEDNESDAY:
Team facilities remain open and that signing/negotiating period above continues.

Teams that open the preseason on Aug. 11 can begin opening training camps.

THURSDAY:
Teams that open the preseason on Aug. 12 can begin opening training camps

4 p.m. - Teams can begin cutting players to get themselves under the salary cap. They can also begin restructuring contracts of current players.

FRIDAY:
Teams that open the preseason on Aug. 13 can begin opening training camps. ... As a result, Giants players are expected to report for camp.

6 p.m. - Free agency officially begins, as any negotiated contracts can officially be filed with the NFL office and announced as deals.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY:
Teams that open the preseason on Aug. 14 and 15 can begin opening training camps. ... As a result, Jets players are expected to report for camp on Sunday.

NEXT THURSDAY, AUGUST 4:
The 1,900 NFL players have until this date to ratify the CBA and settlements and approve the recertification of the NFLPA as a union. If that happens - and players are expected to overwhelmingly approve anything they vote on - the "league year" will begin. At that point, teams must be under the $120.375 million salary cap. The "league year" can begin any time the NFLPA has gotten approval from 51 percent of their membership. Voting will begin as soon as players begin reporting to their team facilities.

AUG 11-15:
First weekend of preseason, played as scheduled.

Interesting, there is a two day window for trades before existing contracts can be reworked?

this is going to be a frenzied couple of weeks for Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin
