Plaxico Burress unhappy with timing of Jeremy Shockey trade

by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger Monday July 21, 2008, 8:13 PM

Burress said he has "so many things going through my head right now."Plaxico Burress thinks the Giants should have traded Jeremy Shockey a lot sooner than today.

"Why not? Why not have everybody go into a situation where they know what's what?" Burress told the Star-Ledger and NJ.com late this afternoon. "He could have been in New Orleans learning the playbook and things like that. And for us, three days before training camp starts, you're trading an All-Pro tight end? Imagine how we feel."

Burress had a lot more to say about the Shockey situation, but he also addressed his own by saying he will be at camp on Thursday - even if he doesn't have a new deal by then. But he won't be happy.

"At the end of the day, it shouldn't have gotten to this point," said Burress, who has expressed optimism when talking about his contract during his recent appearances to promote his book, "Giant: The Road to the Super Bowl" with Jason Cole. "It just shows me as a person how important I really am to them."

Here's the entire transcript of what Burress had to say:

(Sad day for you?)
Yeah, sort of. I don't know. There's just so many things going through my head right now.

(Have you talked to Shockey?)
No, I haven't had a chance to talk to him. I left him a message and told him I was really happy for him. He didn't want to be there and when you don't want to be somewhere you have to find somewhere you're happy at, from a personal standpoint. Me personally, I want him around. Jeremy's probably one of the top reasons I came to New York. People talk about how we're a better team without him, but those are the people that don't know football. I hear that and it's like, 'You people are crazy. You've never played a down of football in your life, so what would you even know?' The guy walks on the field and he demands a double team. Before he even straps it up and goes out to play, he's already made the team better. Him going to New Orleans, he makes them one of the best offenses in the league. You put him with (Reggie) Bush, with Drew (Brees) and (Marques) Colston ... I mean Marques Colston has to be so happy right now he's probably in his backyard right now doing handsprings and cartwheels. (Shockey) gets them out of double coverage. He just makes that team so much better by going there. For us, we made that run to the Super Bowl without him, so now we'll see if we're better without him over a 16-game schedule. People got the playoff run and winning the Super Bowl mixed up with what that guy did for that organization over the past six years he's been there. That's the breaking point for me. You win five games without the guy and all of a sudden it's like the guy doesn't exist. But he's one of the main reasons why I became a Giant and why we got to the playoffs last year. I know for a fact we wouldn't have made it to the playoffs if he hadn't played at all. I'm more or less upset at the fact we could have traded him a long time ago.

(So you feel this should have been done sooner?)
Why not? Why not have everybody go into a situation where they know what's what? He could have been in New Orleans learning the playbook and things like that. And for us, three days before training camp starts, you're trading an All-Pro tight end? Imagine how we feel.

(Outside of the timing, do you feel the team could have handled it any differently?)
I don't really know what happened between Jeremy and upstairs (the front office), but the guy will tell you he was unhappy a long time ago. You should have done what was right when he wanted to do it instead of dragging through the process of not knowing where the guy was going to be, you know?

(Have you said anything to the front office?)
I don't have to say nothing. They spoke for us. Those are the guys that make the decisions. I know for myself, Jeremy made my job a lot easier. Like I said, he's one of the reasons I came to play with a tight end of that caliber, not taking anything away from (Kevin) Boss. All the negative things people say about Jeremy ... if you ask any of the guys in our locker room or anybody that played with him, nobody never has a problem with the guy. From a teammate standpoint and how hard he played ... he's one of the hardest workers I've ever been around, period. Any guy who played with him would never say Jeremy had a problem with him or that he had a problem with Jeremy. People see him on the football field and he's upset and how he speaks his mind and says what he feels, but the guy's passionate about the game. He loves it. He wants to compete. He wants the ball every play if he can get it. Me, I want to be around a person like that. I want to play with guys that want the ball, that want to score. I'm going to miss him, but he's happy and that's all that matters at the end of the day.

(In April, you said privately were going to flip out if they traded him at all...)
Yeah, well I hadn't had a chance to talk to Jeremy because he was out of the country, but I talked to him a few weeks ago and he was unhappy. The guy was almost depressed. He wanted to get out of the situation he was in and he was unhappy. I didn't know to what extent how unhappy he was until I had a chance to talk to him. And then, unselfishly, I was like, 'Man, the guy is unhappy with his situation.' You have to be unselfish and say, 'I just want the best for you as a person.' We're still going to be good friends.

(How does this affect your situation?)
It doesn't. It's just going to be real strange without No. 80 on the football field.

(I meant your contract situation.)
I don't see why it would affect it. I'm still looking to get my deal done. I guess we just have to wait it out.

(Three days left before camp and nothing's done.)
Not as of yet, no. But they're working hard to get it done. I'm talking to my agent every day. I sat down and met with him today. I'm just waiting on a phone call.

(You've been confident something will get done.)
Well, that's what I'm being told. I don't do the numbers game. All I can do is wait.

(And if nothing's done by camp, what's going to happen?)
I'm going to be at camp. I'm going to get out and practice. I said that I may not have, but the smarter thing for me to do is to show up and show my teammates I'm ready to play football. At the end of the day, it shouldn't have gotten to this point. It just shows me as a person how important I really am to them. This thing's a two-way street. It's not a one-way. It kind of opens my eyes, not only for me but for everybody around. It's a two-way street and it's a business. They've shown me a lot over the past few months with this contract deal. It just opens your eyes a little bit to the people you're walking around with. You look them in the face and they smile at you. I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing and continue to play football. I can still play at a high level. Everybody knows that. It's not going to stop me from making plays on the football field.

(You feel you're not as important to them as you thought you were?)
Evidently not. We've been trying to get this thing done and it doesn't seem like it's really important to them. But it's not the first time this has happened to a player, even a guy like myself who wants to be around and wants to retire a Giant. It never should have gotten to this point. I'm not saying I don't want to be around. I don't want to leave. That's the most encouraging thing is I don't want to leave. But there's apparently more to it.

Burress contract talks stalled? Empty Re: Burress contract talks stalled?

Post  Big_Pete Tue Jul 22, 2008 12:08 am

from http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2008/07/plaxico-burress-will-report-to.html

July 21, 2008
Plaxico Burress will report to camp no matter what

Plaxico Burress will be in camp on Thursday, whether he has a new contract or not.

That’s what his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told the Daily News a little while ago. And that’s good news, because according to two sources familiar with the negotiations, they’re not as close to being completed as previously thought.

“I don’t think that we’ve ever had discussions about him holding out,” Rosenhaus said. “That’s not him. Plaxico will be at camp regardless of the status of the negotiations. We’ve been able to separate the negotiations from what Plax has to do for the team.”

That wasn’t the case, of course, in mid-June when Burress sat out mini-camp to protest what he felt was a too-slow pace in negotiations on a contract extension. He has three years and $10.5 million left on his current deal, but like many players this offseason, he approached the Giants looking for more.

During his recent book tour, Burress has sounded pleased with the way negotiations have gone since June. But sources say the talks have recently hit a wall. Burress is apparently seeking a contract extension worth in the neighborhood of $8-9 million per season - or what one person said was “pretty close” to Terrell Owens money. Owens recently got a three-year, $27 million extension from the Cowboys.

The Giants’ of fer to Burress was characterized as significant, but a source said they’ve “gone about as far as they’re willing to go.”

Rosenhaus, meanwhile, did not indicate there was any problem with the negotiations. He said the talks will continue over the next few days and “The goal continues to be to try and get something done before the start of training camp. I don’t know whether that’s going to happen. To the Giants credit, though, they’ve been working on it.”

***
Rosenhaus, by the way, also represents Shockey and said his departure from the team that drafted him is “bittersweet. He’s going to miss his coaches and especially his teammates. But in talking with Jeremy, he’s excited about a new chapter in his life and getting a fresh start.”

Meanwhile, Shockey had this brief statement on the New Orleans Saints’ website (http://neworleanssaints.com/Articles/2008/7/Saint%20Shockey.aspx): “I am excited to join the Saints as they have expressed interest in me. I have had a relationship with Coach Payton and I appreciate what he has done as a head coach,” said Shockey. “The Saints have a lot of weapons starting with Drew Brees and I look forward to joining my teammates at training camp. This will be a fun year.”

Shockey will be in New Orleans on Tuesday and will take a physical for the Saints on Wednesday. If he passes - and Rosenhaus said he will - the deal will become official.

***
Antonio Pierce appeared today on Sirius NFL Radio’s Moving the Chains and had this to say about the Giants’ decision to trade Shockey:

“For me, personally, it’s sad,” Pierce said. “A good friend, a great teammate. I think for the organization, everybody thinks it is a sad situation.”

Asked why it had to come to this, Pierce said “You know what? I really don’t know. Here’s a guy, spent six years here [and] did everything. I mean, he was a Pro Bowler. His numbers speak for themselves. He even helped us this year. Everyone wants to put the blame on him or pick on him a little bit saying we were better without him. That’s not the case. We were 9-5 with Shockey. Shockey wasn’t happy. Obviously, the Giants, the front office people upstairs weren’t happy. You wish he could still be a New York Giant but that’s not what either one of the parties wanted. He wanted to get away. ; The Giants finally dealt him. So for me, personally, it’s sad. I think I speak for all my teammates when I say we’ll miss Shockey. The Saints are getting a hell of a player. He’s a great guy. He’s a great teammate. There’s more positive things to say about Shockey than all the negative things that the media portray him as.”

Burress contract talks stalled? Empty Re: Burress contract talks stalled?

Burress Wants TO kind of money?

$8mil to $9mil a season?

I am sorry, but I don't think so.

I think up to around $6 million / year is reasonable (including a new signing bonus) and a couple of more years.

That is still double what he was scheduled to make (itself a reasonable contract at the time).

If Burress doesn't like the new deal on offer, too bad, I guess his options are

1. Play under his current deal

2. Hold Out

3. Join the Shockey express out of NYG - (perhaps NYJ?)

The last option wouldn't be ideal, but it may be necessary. We have talent and depth at WR, if we have to we can roll the dice that some of our top youngsters will be able to setp up. After all, it has worked at DB, DL, OL, TE and RB.

Agent says Plaxico Burress won't be trouble for Giants, will report to camp

BY RALPH VACCHIANO
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

With Jeremy Shockey gone, the Giants' last remaining pre-camp headache appears to be Plaxico Burress. But there's nothing to worry about there, according to his agent, who said the receiver definitely will be in camp on time. Drew Rosenhaus, Burress' agent, told the Daily News Monday that his client will report to camp at the University at Albany Thursday morning with the rest of the Giants. And the receiver plans to be there whether he has a new deal in place or not.

That's important, because according to sources familiar with the negotiations, a new deal is not the certainty Burress has recently made it out to be. One source said the sides remain far apart, and the Giants "have gone about as far as they're willing to go."

Still, Burress has no plans to do what he did in June, when he sat out the team's mandatory minicamp because he was unhappy with the slow progress of talks.

"I don't think that we've ever had discussions about him holding out," Rosenhaus said yesterday. "That's not him. Plaxico will be at camp regardless of the status of the negotiations. We've been able to separate the negotiations from what Plax has to do for the team."

Burress has said several times in recent weeks that he was close to getting an extension on his contract, which has three years and about $10.5 million remaining. However, two sources yesterday indicated the sides aren't as close as they appeared, though talks are continuing.

Burress apparently is seeking a deal "pretty close" to what some of the other top receivers have gotten during the offseason. He believes he should be paid in the neighborhood of Larry Fitzgerald (four years, $40 million), Javon Walker (six years, $55 million), Terrell Owens (three years, $27 million) and Randy Moss (three years, $27 million). In other words, he's seeking something close to $9 million per year.

So.. at 9 mil, Buress wants to make more money than Eli is making?
ha, good luck!
6mil per year is the best I'd give or he can sit out and make nothing.

Actually, I'd probably wait and watch him practice for a few weeks to see if he has any nagging injuries that have carried over from last season.

Burress contract talks stalled? Empty Re: Burress contract talks stalled?

I am a little unsure about Burress and his agent.

Both have been very active in trying to manipulate things when it should be all done behind the scenes.

Even Shockey handled his situation rather well all things considered.

I don't know, I have nagging feeling the Burress situation will be a problem at some point in the future (although possibly not this year). The fact that he has gone public with his desire for 9 mil a year is a worry. I don't see him in the same class as Larry Fitzgerald, Randy Moss, Chad Johnson etc. The Giants aren't a team that will give him that kind of dollars. I do understand Burress's point of view, but his methods are wrong; I think it could get ramped up at some point.

I have a suspicion that Burress will seem to toe the team line, but behind the scenes cause enough problems for Reese to consider trading him. In the process Burress gets that nice fat contract extension (around $9 mil a year) from another team; he isn't going to get it here.

Burress contract talks stalled? Empty Re: Burress contract talks stalled?

Post  Big_Pete Wed Jul 23, 2008 6:52 am

I have a feeling that the Giants/Reese/Coughlin-Burress/Rosenhaus relationship is only going to go down hill

Burress' antics at the mandatory workouts is a good indication

Then he publically wants a new $9million a year (which he knows the Giants can't and won't match) despite being under contract until 2011.

Don't forget he has publically criticised the front office about the handling of the Shockey affair, which really should have been just between the front office and Shockey/Rosenhaus

This is a very steep slope Burress in on..

I suspect things will only get worse fron here on out; it may take some tme, but I expect the wheels to fall off eventually.
