GIANTS INSIDE SLANT

The continuing saga of tight end Jeremy Shockey took on a new tone during the recently concluded mandatory minicamp when he engaged, reportedly, in a shouting match with general manager Jerry Reese. No one from the "outside" witnessed it, nor were there any reports on the topic(s), but it apparently did happen.

Shockey wants ... well, no one is sure what he wants since he has chosen not to communicate with the media. Variously, it has been reported that he wants to be traded, that he wants a different role in the offense (less blocking, more downfield receiving), that he wants an "apology" from the team for its reported refusal to have him on the Super Bowl sidelines (a health hazard since he was on crutches) or some other such nonsense.

There was a trade sort of in place prior to the draft that would have sent him to New Orleans, but the Saints were willing to trade their second-round pick (40th overall) and nothing else, while the Giants requested either safety Roman Harper or a fourth-round pick.

It fell through.

Now there seem to be rumors of several teams making an offer, or at least an inquiry, including the Saints, who are revisiting the situation, along with Seattle, Miami and Green Bay.

Perhaps still disturbing the former Pro Bowl player is the fact that the Giants made it all the way to Super Bowl victory without him. He was injured (ankle, fractured fibula) and missed the final two games of the season and all four playoff outings. In his stead, the Giants relied on rookie Kevin Boss, who did exceedingly well and contributed a 45-yard reception in the Super Bowl.

The Giants are better with Shockey on the field, but perhaps not with him in the locker room. He has "called out" head coach Tom Coughlin in the past for being "unprepared and outcoached" after a couple of losses, and did tell a few of his friends on the team that he wouldn't be around after the just-concluded season.

In fact, when in the spring of 2007 backup tight end Visanthe Shiancoe was mulling an offer to sign a contract with Minnesota during the free-agent period, Shockey reportedly told him: "Stay here. I'll be gone next year and you'll be the starter."

If he's working toward that goal, he is clearly doing another Pro Bowl job.
