Here is my thinking of draft day

draft day trade

Giants trade Osi to New England for #48

The Patriots need a quality pass rusher and this year's group is thin in the draft. The Pats offered a late 2nd last year and Osi is probably worth a mid 2nd right now. Reese certainly won't trade Osi for less.

my draft thinking

32 - TE Coby Fleener, Stanford
Fleener has been under the radar, but he is a quality recieving TE and genuine weapon in the passing game. Fleener could be easily as good as Shockey but without the attitude. This opens up more two TE sets with Fleener and Bennett.

48 - RT Kelechi Osmele, Iowa State
Physicality on the offensive line has been one of the biggest problems we had with out ground game last year. We need to start grooming players for the future. Osmele is a strong, physical tackle with good athelticism and long arms. He is an ideal fit for us to groom as the eventual right tackle.

63 - ILB Mychal Kendricks, California
Speed and athleticism has been the problem with our LB corps for some time. Kendricks has excellent speed and athleticism and is a good tackler. Depending on what happens with free agency he could play either WLB (if Boley moves inside) or MLB.

94 - G Brandon Brooks, Miami Ohio
Brooks is a big physical guard with amazing athleticism. Brooks and Osmele will give is that physicality we have lacked on offense and help us regain our effective ground game.

126 - OLB Demario Davis, Arizona State
Davis is a physical, athletic OLB with good speed. If Kiwanuka moves back to DE, we need more talent to groom at OLB.

158 - DT Derek Wolfe, Cincinnati
If Bernard leaves, we need a 4th DT for the rotation. Wolfe is an interesting prospect to groom for the future.

190 - CB Asa Jackson, Cal Poly
A decent backup CB and special teamer

222 - RB Davin Meggett, Maryland
A RB with decent speed and physicality and was effective in a rotational situtation (ironically with Da'Rel Scott). I doubt Reese will go for a RB early. Megget's father is a former Giant..

QB (2) - Manning, Carr/ Perriloux

WR (5) - Nicks, Cruz, Hixon, Barden, Jernigan/ Stanback/ DePalma

RB (4) - Bradshaw, Ware/ Brown, Scott, Meggett

FB (1) - Hynoski

TE (3) - Fleener, Bennett, Pascoe/ Purvis/ Hopkins/ Donnell

RT (2) - Beatty, Osmele/ Capers

RG (2) - Snee, Petrus/ White

OC (2) - Baas, Cordle

LG (2) - Boothe, Brooks

LT (2) - Diehl, Brewer/ Reinders

DE (4) - Tuck, Pierre-Paul, Kiwanuka, Tollefson*/ Trattou/ Marshall

DT (4) - Canty, Joseph, Austin, Wolfe/ Hendricks

SLB (2) - Sintim, Davis/ Tracy

MLB (3) - Lofton/ Goff*, Kendricks, Jones/ Herzlich

WLB (2) - Boley, Williams/ Paysinger

S (4) - Rolle, Phillips, Sash, Horton

K (1) - Tynes

Pup: Ballard, Beckum

*Note: If we trade Osi and move Kiwi to DE, I would expect we will sign a LB. Either we will resign Goff or bring in a vet such as Curtis Lofton (who like Tulluch hasn't attracted as much money as he initially thought.
I also expect Tollefson will return.

Good to hear from you again Pete.
The more I think about it, the more I lean towards trading Osi as well. If we could get a mid 2nd then it might not be a bad idea. It would also save us some cap dollars to possibly sign Tollefson and a few other key components. Blackburn or Goff perhaps.

I think trading Osi is on the cards, but only if we get a good priced offer for him, otherwise Reese will play hardball. It is worth noting we rejected late 2nd round offers from New England and Baltimore last year. I think a mid 2nd in the minimum that Reese would consider. Reese is quite willing to keep Osi as well.

I don't think Blackburn returns the Giants do have offers on the table for both Goff and Tollefson so both could be back.

I'm all for trading Osi because I believe its one of the ways we improve this defense. Do I think we'll get a 2nd this year? Hell No, but I got my fingers crossed. I think a 3rd is the best offer we'll get and thats reasonable for him. This year is different than last for Reese concerning Osi. Last year it was worth playing hardball, this year not so much. We didn't get near the production as we did a year ago, he's sitting on the final year of his contract, and not to mention a year older. If we want to get something in return for him we'll have to settle on a 3rd at best. Which isn't a bad return at all considering he's outta here after this season.

We can easily replace Osi with Kiwi and getting Kiwi outta LB will be a plus for this defense.

-Saints signed Lofton.
-I like Kendricks
-Beatty's our left tackle, if anything Diehl at RT.
-Fleener may be a product of Luck but his measurables are nice. I rather go with Bennett/Pascoe until Ballard returns. We don't need to invest that much into TE.
-We had one of the worst rushing offenses last season, you added back up lineman to improve it? I'd like to see a little more done than that.

D+.

Very Happy Nice to see your back Pete.

Osi will only be traded if Reese gets what he wants for him, otherwise Osi is going nowhere.
I see where you are coming from regarding his value, but there is a huge demand for pass rushers right now.
A player for player trade could happen, maybe with Jonathan Stewart, but we will see.

As far as the online upgrades go, both Osmele and Brooks could start right away. I just put them behind the vets initially. Both are ver physical which is what we need. It would push Diehl to the swing backup, which suits him in my opinion. Don't forget both Diehl and Beatty are off contract after the year.

I think upgrading our line is the big issue we need for our run game.

After rethinking things a little, I still think it is unlikely we draft either a RB or LB early. As such here is my revised mock.

32. TE Coby Fleener, Stanford

63. CB Josh Robinson, Central Florida

94. RB Robert Turbin, Utah State

127. C Ben Jones, Georgia

131. LB Travis Lewis, Oklahoma

167. DT Derek Wolfe, Cincinnati

201. DE Matt Conrath, Virginia

239. RB Davin Meggett, Maryland

We went into the season last year with 3 major changes to the line. Cutting O'Hara, Seubert, and moving Diehl back to LG. We started Beatty at LT, he only played 10 games. Baas started at C, he only played 11. Diehl then being forced back to LT. This line needs time to gel. I think we'll add someone to the mix but we have guys on our roster now between vets Diehl and Boothe, and young guys we've been grooming with Petrus and Brewer who are capable of starting and filling the LG and RT spots on our line.

Meanwhile our problem at RB still exist. Bradshaw is injury prone, playing on 80 year old ankles and feet. After that we have Ware and Scott. Whether its trading for Stewart, resigning Jacobs, or drafting someone high, we need to make a move on a RB.

I agree, our line does need to Gel, but at the same time, we need to consider grooming guys for the future considering the age/contract situation of Snee. Diehl and Baas.
I am thinking we will address the Oline at some point, but maybe not until the mid rounds. I am really liking Jones in the 3rd/4th.

You have a good point about RB, personally I like the idea of Stewart (maybe for a 3rd round pick?) He could compete with Bradshaw and both would be an ideal combination.
Frankly I am not a fan of Ware. There will also be good value at RB in the draft, there is quite a bit of talent and there should be good value available in day 2/3

Petrus and brewer can be labeled as players we've been developing. I wouldnt mind seeing Beatty at LT, petrus at LG, Baas at C, snee at RG, Diehl at RT. boothe as the first interrior lineman off the bench and brewer as the swing tackle. We could always bring back Stacy Andrews and Tony Ugoh on the cheap. But I've always felt its smart to draft at least 1 ol and 1 dl every draft. So i think 1 should be drafted mid to late rounds.

I'm all for trading for stewart with a 3rd round pick. especially if we can recoup that 3rd by trading osi. That's a lot of wheelin and dealing though. And that's very uncharacteristic of jr. One thing is for certain. We need to bring in a rb. I think that's more of a need then people realize.

Going by reese's recent comments, I think we can pencil beatty in as starting left tackle. He also mentioned both Brewer and Diehl as RT options.

I am intrigued by Reinders and Capers has some developmental potential.

I think reese would make a play for the right guy at the right price.

Two RBs I do like is Chris Polk and Robert Turbin, both are likely day 2 picjs
