Familiar face returns

JULY 30, 2008

ALBANY, NY - A familiar face returned to the Giants this afternoon on the University at Albany campus. Safety Craig Dahl re-signed with the Giants this morning adding more depth to an already crowded secondary.

The Giants brought back S Craig Dahl who was on the team last year
Dahl, an undrafted rookie out of North Dakota State University, originally signed with the Giants back on May 8, 2007. As a rookie, Dahl played in ten games, including two starts: on December 9th in Philadelphia and December 16th against Washington.

The former Bison finished the season with 18 tackles (10 solo) on defense and five solo special teams tackles before having his rookie campaign cut short when he suffered a torn ACL on December 29th against the New England Patriots.

Since that time Dahl has spent endless days rehabbing to get back to where he hoped to be.

“I was in a rehab clinic in New Jersey for the whole off-season,” said Dahl. “I set my goal last year, to be here in camp, and everything has worked out great. I didn’t have any problems over the off-season, and now I’m back at it.”

For an injury the magnitude of an ACL, it was surprising to many to see him back so soon. Normally, a torn ACL takes between six to nine months to recover from but after five and a half months of rehab, Dahl felt that his initial predictions were not far off.

Dahl, who was told that it would be a while before he could return to playing football, found himself ahead of schedule, allowing for a quick return. When asked if he was almost 100%, Dahl he responded with an emphatic “Oh yeah.”

The injury could not have come at a worse time for Dahl who was playing in the season finale against the Patriots. Only a week away from his first ever postseason experience Dahl’s season came to a screeching halt.

“The injury hurt like hell,” said Dahl. “As soon as the team doctors came on the field they told me right then and there that I was done and my season was over. They told me right on the field.”
Not only did Dahl need season ending surgery, but he also missed out on the opportunity to be part of a historic Super Bowl run for the Giants.

“It was hard seeing the guys do so well,” stated Dahl. “I wanted to be out there, enjoying it with them, but I knew I had a long road ahead of me, a hard path to go down. Mentally, it made me more focused after seeing those guys have the great success that they did. I’m happy for them.”

Although he wasn’t able to participate in Super Bowl XLII, Dahl had the opportunity to travel with the team and cheer his teammates on from the sidelines.

“My knee was feeling a lot better by then, and I was able to travel with the team. I was able to be part of it, and they welcomed me there just like I was one of them,” said Dahl.

Now the second-year pro is back with the Giants and competing for a roster spot yet again. However, this time Dahl is aware of the strong competition in the defensive backfield and knows it’s going to take a lot of work to get back to where he wants to be.

“It is definitely a great competition we have here. We lost a great player in Gibril Wilson, but we brought in two other guys, Kenny Phillips and Sammy Knight, who will be able to fill his shoes. It’s going to be the same competition you would go into any camp with. On a good team, there will always be a lot of guys there to make the competition better.”

Dahl has worked hard to get where he is, but it will only continue to get harder from here on out for the former NDSU standout. The upcoming weeks will certainly be interesting as the fight in the secondary has only begun.

Good to see Dahl back

There is a ton of competition at safety this year.

It looks like Phillips will emerge as the starter early.
