My thoughts on the 2009 Giants Empty My thoughts on the 2009 Giants

Post  Big_Pete Thu Dec 04, 2008 12:49 am

Here are my current thoughts on what I would consider next offseason for the 2009 Giants.

All draft picks are based on draft order as after week 13*

Whilst Burress is a genuine talent, I believe things have a gone beyond the point of no return. I would trade Burress, most likely for a third round pick; several teams would be interested including Tampa Bay, New Orleans, but I think an AFC team would be preferred perhaps Oakland (#70).

Burress’s contract is reportedly structured so that it will have little impact on the Giants salary cap.

It will be interesting to see what if any fallout Pierce experienced from his involvement in the Burress incident

Free Agents

QB David Carr UFA
QB Anthony Wright UFA
RB Brandon Jacobs UFA
RB Derrick Ward UFA
RB Danny Ware EFA
RB Kay Jay Harris RFA
WR Amani Toomer
OL Grey Ruegamer UFA
OL Shane Olivea UFA
DE Jerome McDougle UFA
DE Renaldo Wynn UFA
DE Dave Tollefsen EFA
CB Kevin Dockery RFA
CB RW McQuarters UFA
SS James Butler UFA
S Craig Dahl EFA

The Giants will have a little more cap room next off-season. I expect their priorites will be to extend the contracts of Eli Manning, Barry Cofield, Corey Webster and perhaps Guy Whimper all of whom will be off contract after 2009.

With Burress’s departure, Amani Toomer may get a one or two year extenstion.
I expect that all the EFAs will be back, as will most RFAs.

Rugamer and/or Olivea could be back in if the price is right. I expect that Butler, McQuarters and perhaps Dockery will not be back

David Carr will likely be resigned as Eli’s primary backup. I think in the end either Jacobs or Ward will be resigned, the other will leave in free agency.

As far as free agent signings go, I think we will try and sign one or two middle tier free agents. My money is on a TE such LJ Smith to mentor the young TEs.

I also think the writing is on the wall for Gerris Wilkinson, he has talent, but hasn't been able to stay heathy.

Compensationary picks.

The NFL will announce up to 32 compensation picks for rounds 3-7; I have assumed an even spread with the max number of picks: 6 picks at the end of the 3rd,4th and 5th rounds and 7 picks in the 6th and 7th rounds.

I am assuming the Giants will get 3rd round (Gibril Wilson), 5th round (Kawika Mitchell) and 6th (Reggie Torbor) picks

Draft

The Giants will go into the draft without any major needs and will have the luxury of picking the best player on their board.

-- 1st Round --
32 DT BJ Raji, Boston College, 6-1, 323, 5.15

Raji adds a huge prescence inside and a big boost to our run defense. Raji s a excellent run stuffer who can also collapse the pocket. Raji continues the Giants tradition of quality BC linemen

"Massive, powerful run-stuffer who will excel as a 3-4 nose tackle.": draftcountdown.com

-- 2nd Round --
45 (from Saints) LB Clint Sintim, Virginia, 6-3, 254, 4.70

The Giants want big fast LBs; preferably who can cover (which our current LBs lack)
Sintim is an ideal fit at SLB developing behind Clark, he is a proven passrusher and has decent coverage.

"Big hitter who can rush the quarterback and drop into coverage.": draftcountdown.com

64 LB Marcus Freeman, Ohio State, 6-1, 239, 4.60

Freeman is overshadowed bu Laurenaitis but is a legitimate prospect in his own right. He would be an ideal fit to develop at WLB.

"Explosive, athletic WILL who gets overshadowed by Laurinaitis.": draftcountdown.com

-- 3rd Round --
70 (from Raiders) RB James Davis, Clemson, 5-11, 210, 4.50
With Wardor Jacobs gone, the Giants will be looking to bolster their ground attack. Davis is a genuine talent and excellent value here.

"A very underrated runner with natural instincts and good vision.": draftcountdown.com

96: S Courtney Greene, Rutgers, 6-2, 210, 4.50

Greene is a tackling machine with excellent range. He has experience at boh safety positions including the single deep safety.

102 (comp Gibril Wilson): OC Eric Wood, Louisville, 6-4, 309, 5.15

A good center prospect to develop/groom behind O'Hara

-- 4th Round --
134 WR Pat White, West Virginia, 6-1, 192, 4.50

A good all round college player, White will almost certainly have to make the transition to WR, but he definately has talent plus decent size and speed.

-- 5th Round --
153 (from Saints)
CB Brandon Underwood, Cincinnati, 6-1, 190, 4.45

Underwood is good CB prospect and is great value here and bolsters the CB depth behind our starters.

172: CB Ryan Pamer, Texas, 5-10, 186, 4.45

An experienced CB who is also a good special teamer. He adds depth at CB and also special teams units.

178 (comp Kawika Mitchell): K/P Graham Gano, Florida State, 6-1, 192, 5.00

former punter and kickoff specialist during his first few years with the Seminoles Graham Gano has had a great 2008. In addition to his former duties, he has made 21 out of 23 FG attempts with his only misses coming from beyond 50 yards. However, Gano is capable of nailing the long ones too and he is 5-7 from beyond 50 this season with a long of 53. Bobby Bowden has refered to him as possibly the team's MVP.

Gano would be an immediate boost to the kickoff teams where both Tynes and Carney suffer. Gano would also develop/learn from Feagles in what must be his last season.

"An all-around player with upside who hits the ones he's supposed to but also has the leg strength to drill longer attempts and be a kickoff guy": draftcountdown.com

-- 6th Round --
210 S Darcel McBath, Texas Tech, 6-1, 196, 4.50

A good free safety prospect that will increase our depth and special teams

217 (comp Reggie Torbor) TE Davon Drew, East Carolina, 6-4, 260, 4.80

A athletic small school TE prosect with good recieving skills.

-- 7th Round --

249 RB Herb Donaldson, Western Illinois, 5-11, 225, 4.60

A productive small school RB who will compete with Ware, Droughns and Harris for a roster spot.

Note I have assumed the full 32 compensation draft picks (6 in rounds 3-5, 7 in round 6-7)

* * Possible Roster * *

Offense

QB (3): Eli Manning, David Carr, Andre Woodson

RB (4): Brandon Jacobs/Derrick Ward, Ahmad Bradshaw, James Davis, Herb Donaldson/Reuben Droughns/Danny Ware/Kay Jay Harris

FB (1): Madison Hedgecock

WR (6): Domenik Hixon, Amani Toomer, Steve Smith, Sinorice Moss/David Tyree, Mario Manningham, Pat White

TE (3): Kevin Boss, LJ Smith Michael Matthews/Davon Drew/Darcy Johnson

OT (3): Kareem McKenzie, David Diehl, Guy Whimper

OG (3): Chris Snee, Rich Seubert, Kevin Boothe/Adam Koets/Shane Olivea

OC (2): Shaun O’Hara, Grey Ruegamer/Eric Wood

Defense

DE (4): Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Matthias Kiwanuka, Robert Douglas/Dave Tollefsen/Renaldo Wynn

DT (4): Fred Robbins, Barry Cofield, BJ Raji, Jay Alford

LB (7): Antonio Pierce, Danny Clark/Chase Blackburn/Gerris Wilkinson, Brian Kehl, Clint Sintim, Marcus Freeman, Jonathan Goff, Zak DeOssie

CB (5): Aaron Ross, Corey Webster, Terrell Thomas, Brandon Underwood, Ryan Palmer/Kevin Dockery/Sam Madison

S (5): Kenny Phillips, Michael Johnson, Courtney Greene, Darcel McBath, Sammy Knight/Craig Dahl

Special Teams

K: Lawrence Tynes/John Carney, Graham Gano

P: Jeff Feagles, Graham Gano

L/S: Jay Alford, Zak DeOssie

note: I included an extra LB with DeOssie making the roster largely due to special teams play; with the infusion of quality talent along with Kehl and Goff, I can only see one roster spot available for Clark, Blackburn or Wilkinson (unless issues develop with Pierce)

I have also assumed the Giants will continue their tradition of allowing their young talent to develop (it has worked well to date)
