Osi Factor Empty Osi Factor

Post  gman17 Sat Dec 13, 2008 1:29 pm

Guys,

I am heading to Texas to watch the Giants vs Cowboys. I received an early Christmas gift from my brother-in-law. I will be sittiing on the 30 yard line behind the Giants bench.

With the MSM focusing on the Giant defensive line's lack of sacks, I disagree. I think with Osi out, the Giants are not generating enough pressure. I think putting pressure is so important. Sacks is a measured statistic. Unfortunately, the NFL does not credit quarterback pressures.

Here is my post about the Osi Factor:

Coughlin on not getting enough pressure on McNabb:

We didn’t put enough pressure on him, no doubt about that. And when we did he found a way to get out of it. And he hurt us with his legs as he did over there. That is one thing that was talked about all week long; the phrase we use is ‘cage’ – ‘cage the quarterback.’ Well we didn’t keep him caged.

Coughlin's statement had me thinking all day. Here is what I think about the line not getting enough pressure.

This Giants defensive unit's foundation is the defensive line and backs. Prior to the draft in April, I wrote an article on the New York Times football blog the Fifth Down. At the time, because of the possible imminent departure of DE Michael Strahan, I thought the Giants would select a hybrid DE/DT with their first round selection. Instead, GM Jerry Reese chose safety Kenny Phillips. Although I like the Phillips pick, back in April and up until now, I do not think the Giants have quality depth along the defensive line.

In the preseason, losing All-Pro DE Osi Umenyiora to a season ending injury, without question, left a huge hole. When Osi went down, I thought the Giants would finish 11-5 and would make the playoffs as a Wild Card. Needless to say, this team has impressed me with their performance thus far. However, I think the Giants defensive line is beginning to feel the grind of a long 16 game season. Right now, DT Fred Robbins is playing with two broken hands. Kiwi has not played an entire season at end and Tuck too. Because of the lack of quality depth, I think Kiwi and Tuck have hit a wall. This is the reason I think they are having trouble pressuring a quarterback. Furthermore, as the season marches to a close, the Giants are going to face Dallas, Carolina, and Minnesota. All three teams have very good offensive lines. With lack of depth and facing better offensive lines, the Giants starters on the defensive line have a tough road ahead. Beginning on Sunday night, the Giants defensive line must get pressure on Romo. If they do not, I think it is going to be a long night for the Giants.

The Giants are going to need to get to Romo to beat the Cowboys. Good post, I agree with pretty much everything. And have fun at the game!

Santa was good to you for sure gman. Hope you have a good time!

The loss of Osi is really taking it's toll imo.
Don't get me wrong, losing Strahan was big too but it was to be expected and we slowly built our defensive line knowing Stra wouldn't be here in the near future. Thumbs up to our staff for that.

I think drafting Phillips in round 1 was a no-brainer. He was the best safety in the draft and we are lucky he was still there when the giants picked.
Phillips is a great wrap-up tackler with good range and rarely misses a tackle one on one. I believe last week he missed a tackle but that was the first time I've seen him miss this year. He was an immediate upgrade to our secondary.

DT should be addresed early in this years draft and I think it will. As much as I like Cofield and Alford. I think you basically have the same type of player there. Neither is a bad player but neither one of them is going to blow up the play in front of them. (ok... so Alford did on Brady in the SB)
Robbins has the ability to make plays but like you said "He's playing with two broken hands".
Another stout DT and a healthy Osi will make for a dominant defense and be able to turn all those qb pressures into qb sacks.

Players like Romo and McNabb have good awareness, are slippery, and can escape trouble. They cause problems for every team, not just the giants.
