Giants make roster moves

Giants place veteran CB Sam Madison on injured reserve
By Michael Eisen, Giants.com

DECEMBER 30, 2008

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - The Giants today added two players to their roster in advance of tomorrow’s first practice of the postseason. They signed cornerback Rashad Barksdale off their practice squad and signed linebacker Rich Scanlon.

The Giants signed CB Rashad Barksdale off their practice squad to replace CB Sam Madison

To make room on the roster, the Giants put cornerback Sam Madison on injured reserve and waived linebacker Edmond Miles. Madison broke his right ankle in the third quarter at Minnesota.

Barksdale, 6-0 and 208 pounds, was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 1. He was released on Oct. 21 but re-signed the next day.

In 2007, Barksdale spent the entire season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He played in six games and was inactive for the other 10 games. Barksdale finished with nine special teams tackles. He made his NFL debut against Jacksonville on Oct. 7 with one special teams tackle. Barksdale had three tackles vs. Tennessee on Dec. 16 and at the Jets on Dec. 30.

Barksdale joined the NFL as a sixth-round draft choice of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2007, the 201st overall selection. He was waived on Sept. 1, 2007 and signed by Kansas City the following day.

Barksdale is the first player on the Giants’ active roster from the University at Albany, where they have held training camp since 1996.

Barksdale played baseball for two seasons at Albany before joining the football team as a walk-on as a senior in 2006. He started 10 games at cornerback and was credited with 37 tackles (26 solo) and intercepted three passes, including two in the fourth quarter in an upset victory over Delaware. Barksdale was an All-State running back and defensive back at Hudson (N.Y.) High School. He was born on May 11, 1984.

Scanlon, 6-2 and 249 pounds, has played in 40 games – 31 with Kansas City from 2004-06 and nine with Tennessee in 2007. He also played in a postseason game with the Titans last season. Scanlon has never started a game, as most of his playing time has been on special teams, where he has 51 tackles.

Scanlon joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2004. As a rookie he played in six games and had five special teams tackles. He started 11 games for the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europa in 2005, when he led the league with 94 tackles (68 solo). That year, he played all 16 games for the Chiefs, including 13 in which he played on defense. He led the team with 29 special teams tackles and had three tackles on defense. In 2006, Scanlon played in nine games, including seven on defense. He had 10 special teams tackles. He was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury on Dec. 31, 2006.

Scanlon was waived by the Chiefs at the end of training camp in 2007. He signed with the Titans on Oct. 31, 2007 and contributed seven special teams tackles and two fumble recoveries in nine regular season games and two special teams tackles in the Titans’ AFC Wild Card loss at San Diego.

In four seasons at Syracuse, Scanlon played in 43 games with 27 starts and recorded 277 tackles (178 solo), 4.5 sacks, two interceptions, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.

Scanlon was the New Jersey Defensive Player of the Year at Bergen Catholic High School, which is located a short distance from Giants Stadium. He was born on Dec. 23, 1980.

Madison finished his 12th NFL season – and third with the Giants – with two defensive tackles and an interception, plus four special teams tackles, in seven games.

Miles was signed on Dec. 17 and played in the last two regular season games. He assisted on a special teams tackle at Minnesota.

Both CB Rashad Barksdale and LB Rich Scanlon, both have special teams experience (co-incidince?)

I think the front office is trying to improve our kick coverage units (which are ordinary)

Ordinary is being nice, they are sub par. I think last game the announcer said the Giants are last in kick coverage. That is pathetic, especially considering how deep the team is. I guess missing Tyree is hurting us more than we thought.

Tyree being hurt for sure but also Goff and Wilkinson

plus Blackburn, Hixon moving into the starting rotation

McQuarters must go, he is as bad as Brian Mitchell was for us

but we have to do alot better

All good points. Yea McQuarters seems to lose another step every game. I'd like to see Hixon or Moss get a shot back there next year, but not now. Experience is the key now, no point in taking chances with the ball control offense we've got.

Droughns in another vet who is basically holding a roster spot. He doesn't add anything to the running game (Ware has supplanted him on the depth chart) and his special teams play isn't special

Hixon would be ok now to return punts, he has experience, but not while he is the #1 WR

I would like to see Bradshaw also being considered for Punts next year; perhaps Mario Manningham as well

DeOssie is another that must step up; he is there almost purely for special teams. He is a decent snapper, but must do better on coverage, particularly as he does have very good speed and athleticism. I want to see DeOssie making a few plays.

Terrell Thomas looks ok

I think one of the things hurting us on special teams also is hurting us on defense

We are generally lacking genuine speed and explosion at both LB (starters and depth) and at DE (other than Tuck and Kiwanuka).

I also think Tuck and Kiwanuka are wearing down because they are not being rotated enough due to lack of quality depth.

The only LBs I am sure will be back next year is Kehl and Goff; Pierce and Blackburn (in a backup role) are likely to be back but the others are really under the microscope.

Part of our problem in our kicking units is a lack of genuine leg strength; we dont have a booming kick at either Punter or Kicker

I would like us to look at that in the draft; perhaps with someone like Graham Gano who could develop behind Carney/Tynes and Feagles for a year whilst seriously enhancing our kickoffs
