How the 2009 Giants Roster is shaping up Empty How the 2009 Giants Roster is shaping up

Here is my take on how the likely Giants 2009 roster is shaping up

(pending additions in blue, RFA signings in Red); everyone else is under contract

QB (3): Eli Manning, David Carr, Andre Woodson

WR (6): Veteran (via trade)/Rookie, Domenik Hixon, Steve Smith, Mario Manningham, Rookie, Sinorice Moss/David Tyree/Derek Hagan

TE (3): Kevin Boss, Darcy Johnson, Rookie/Michael Matthews

RB (4): Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, Danny Ware, Rookie

FB (1): Madison Hedgecock

OT (3): David Diehl, Kareem McKenzie, Guy Whimper/Rookie

OG (3): Chris Snee, Rich Seubert, Kevin Boothe/Adam Koets

OC (2): Shaun O'Hara, Rookie

DE (4): Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Matthias Kiwanuka, Robert Henderson/Dave Tollefsen

DT (5): Fred Robbins, Chris Canty, Rocky Bernard, Barry Cofield, Jay Alford

OLB (4): Michael Boley, Brian Kehl, Danny Clark/Chase Blackburn/Gerris Wilkinson, Zak De Ossie

MLB (3): Antonio Pierce, Jonathan Goff, Rookie

CB (6): Corey Webster, Aaron Ross, Terrell Thomas, Kevin Dockery, Rookie, Rookie

SS (2): Kenny Phillips, Rookie

FS (2): Michael Johnson, Rookie

K (1): Lawrence Tynes

P (1): Jeff Feagles

* Clark, Wikinson, Blackburn are likely fighting for perhaps 1 roster spot; DeOssie will almost certainly at least get a roster spot based on special teams ability

Note: I expect Fred Robbins will be released soon.

I think we trade for a WR like Braylon Edwards; but if not out #1 is almost certainly a WR

after that we still have 8 picks (7 if we trade for Edwards) plus compensation picks for Gibril Wilson, Kawika Mithcell and Reggie Torbor

Other than #1 WR we have 10 rookie needs (either drafted or undrafted free agent)

So looking at that, after our #1 pick...

we may need 1 WR
We will need 1 RB (likely late)
We will need 1 TE (possibly late)
We may need 1 OT
We will need 1 OC to groom as O'Hara's replacement
We will need 1 LB to groom as Pierce's replacement
We will need 4 DBs (either 1 CB and 3 S or 2 CB and 2 S)

The good news is there is excellent depth of Talent at all these positions this year.

Going by recent years, Dockery will not be back after 2009, particularly as Thomas seems to have assumed the primary Nickleback role. Hence why I went with 2 CB and 2 S

I expect we will trade for a WR, very likely Braylon Edwards; but at least for now the door is open for Burress' return. At the moment he is a Giant and there is a reasonable expectation that he could be back (assuming he majorly adjusts to the team conditions, which I think he will). But I won'r speculate on the trade until it is in the books.

I expect we will get compensation picks in the 3rd, 5th and 6th rounds for Gibril Wilson, Kawika Mitchell and Reggie Torbor

with that in mind, my curret estimatation on the rest of the draft is something like:

29: MLB Brian Cushing, USC, 6'03, 243lbs, 4.74, 30 reps

45: S William Moore, Missouri, 6'00", 221lbs, 4.53lbs, 16 rep

60: OC Eric Wood, Louisville, 6'04", 310lbs, 5.23, 30 reps

91: DE Lawrence Sidbury Jr, Richmond, 6'02", 266lbs, 4.64, 28 reps

(best player pick and adds genuine speed and athleticism to the DE corps ~similar to Osi?)

Comp: SS Chip Vaughn, Wake Forrest, 6'01", 221lbs, 4.51, 21 reps

(best player pick and adds a big fast tackling machine which will dramatically help safety depth and special teams)

124: WLB Gerald McGrath, Southern Mississipi, 6'02", 231 lbs, 4.61, 19 reps

(best player pick and adds more speed and athleticism to the LB corps - similar to Boley?)

143: CB Brandon Underwood, Cincinnati, 6'01", 198lbs, 4.53, 16 reps

156: S Courtney Greene, Rutgers, 6'00", 212lbs, 4.54, 21 reps

Comp: CB Morgan Trent, Michigan, 6'01", 193 lbs, 4.54, 23 reps

187: RB Javarris Williams, Tennessee St, 5'10", 219lbs, 4.52, 25 reps

Comp: TE Richard Quinn, North Carolina, 6'04", 264lbs, 4.85, 24 reps

221: WR Jarrett Dillard, Rice, 5'10", 191lbs, 4.53, 13 reps

some notes on the draft from Pat Kirwan...

2. Free-agency signings reflect draft-class weaknesses

Right after NFL executives and coaches returned from an intense week at the combine in Indianapolis, the free-agency period started. Early free-agent signings might point to the positions that teams believe are lacking in the 2009 draft class.

The contracts signed by Scott, Jonathan Vilma, Takeo Spikes, Michael Boley and even Keith Brooking tells me the linebacker talent pool in the draft is suspect. The guard population in the draft also is a concern to NFL teams as Chris Kemoeatu, Brandon Moore and Derrick Dockery all cashed in right away in free agency.

So I guess, assuming Burress is back (at least for now), with my mock draft, the Giants would look something like:

QB (3): Eli Manning, David Carr, Andre Woodson

WR (6): Plaxico Burress, Domenik Hixon, Steve Smith, Mario Manningham, Sinorice Moss, Jarrett Dillard/David Tyree/Derek Hagan

TE (3): Kevin Boss, Darcy Johnson, Richard Quinn/Michael Matthews

RB (4): Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, Danny Ware, Javarris Williams

FB (1): Madison Hedgecock

OT (3): David Diehl, Kareem McKenzie, Guy Whimper

OG (3): Chris Snee, Rich Seubert, Kevin Boothe/Adam Koets

OC (2): Shaun O'Hara, Eric Wood

DE (4): Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Matthias Kiwanuka, Lawrence Sidbury Jr/Robert Henderson/Dave Tollefsen

DT (5): Fred Robbins, Chris Canty, Rocky Bernard, Barry Cofield, Jay Alford

SLB (3): Brian Kehl, Danny Clark/Chase Blackburn/Gerris Wilkinson/Jonathan Goff, Zak De Ossie

MLB (2): Antonio Pierce, Brian Cushing

WLB (2) Michael Boley, Gerald McGrath

CB (5): Corey Webster, Aaron Ross, Terrell Thomas, Brandon Underwood, Kevin Dockery/Morgan Trent

SS (2): Kenny Phillips, Chip Vaughn

FS (2): Michael Johnson, William Moore, Courtney Greene

K (1): Lawrence Tynes
