General manager Jerry Reese says Giants would take Plaxico Burress back

Plaxico Burress might be able to catch on with Giants if he stays out of jail.

DANA POINT, Calif. - If Plaxico Burress doesn't get thrown in jail on gun charges, the Giants have decided to give him another chance, GM Jerry Reese told the Daily News at the league meetings Sunday.

Reese, who said the legal process is what's most important for Burress now, said he and Tom Coughlin and the rest of the organization are "on board" with the plan to allow Burress to return as long as he agrees to play by the same rules as the other players on the team. That means showing up on time, not skipping treatment sessions and being responsible.

Reese made it clear that Burress has signed off on that stipulation in the conversations they've had.

"He said to me he's made some bad decisions. Everybody knows that," Reese said. "I think he's ready to move on and he told me the last time I spoke to him that, 'I think the light has really come on for me.' So I think he is ready to move on with his life, a new chapter in his life. Hopefully, he will able to do that. The legal process will tell the story."

Burress' next court date is March 31 on the two gun charges he faces from the Nov. 28 incident at a midtown club when he accidentally shot himself in the thigh. Because there is no indication if Burress can stay out of jail or how long the legal process will take, the Giants will have to go into the April 25-26 draft with wide receiver as a top priority. If Burress is not is jail, he still likely will face a suspension from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

So I guess it's wait until March 31 to see whether we must spend a top pick on wr in the draft next month.

I think Reese has a few contingency plans in the works

it seems we have been trying to trade for Braylon Edwards

That is the kind of deal I could see happening

but there is no real rush at this point
