I know the 2009 draft is only just in the books, but here is my very early 3 round prediction of the Giants 2010 draft

based on the rankings posted here http://www.touchdownblue.com/ncaa-football-f6/top-100-prospects-for-the-2010-draft-t446.htm

Round 1
OT Ciron Black, LSU (6-5, 325, 5.29)

Black is a massive offensive lineman (6-5, 325) but moves surprisingly well for his size. He showcases very light, agile footwork and is comfortable changing directions in space. He also has a powerful base and the versatility to play on the right or left side.

Round 2
ILB Sean Lee: Penn State (6-2, 234, 4.67)

Lee is not only a tough, instinctive linebacker, but is also a gifted athlete in his own right who has shown the ability to play in space. A knee injury cost him the 2008 season, but I expect this hard working linebacker to be back at full strength come September.

Round 3
C John Estes, Hawaii (6-2, 295, 5.14)

A tough, versatile offensive lineman who has experience at both the guard and center spots. He’s a good overall athlete who moves well in space and showcases the grit and toughness to wear down opponents in the run game.

This is a mixture of value and need. Whilst Beatty is the future LT, Black will be the future RT; Lee is the future MLB and Estes the future C. All three guys will develop behind the starters.

This is merely by extremely early thoughts based on players and possible needs for the Giants.

Here is the other guy I really like as a 1st round option in 2010

WR Brandon LaFell, LSU (6-3, 209, 4.54)

LaFell was LSU’s top wideout last season, and I expect him to be even more productive as a senior. He’s big with good body control and footwork in and out of his breaks. He possesses the coordination to go up and get the ball and makes a catch in almost every game that makes you say, “Wow.” He should be the first senior wide receiver to see his name come off the board.
I know many people will not consider WR a likley need, but Hixon and Moss will be off contract, plus LaFell could be the best value guy on the board (and a legitmate potential #1 WR as well)

I have had a bit of a look towards 2010 and draft possibilites

Key factors will be the likely roster changes.

I think Pierce is gone plus Hixon, Moss, Whimper, Cofield, Robbins, Clark, Wilkinson, Dockery and CC Brown are all coming off contract (and could get better money elsewhere); Hixon and Cofield in particular could be in line for big pay days elsewhere.

I think it is reasonable to assume that LB, DT, OL, DB and perhaps WR are the positions we are most likely to be looking at.

I am not sure Brandon Spikes will be available, but I like Sean Lee (Penn State) in the 2nd/3rd round (assuming he bounces back from injury); Rolando McClain (Alabama), Joe Pawelek (Baylor), Micah Johnson (Kentucky) are other good early MLB prospects. Sean Weatherspoon (Missouri) could be intriging but seems more a WLB.

WR Brandon LaFell (LSU) could be a great value pick late in round 1. WR may not be an urgent priority, but if Hixon and Moss aren't back then extra talent may be needed. LaFell and Nicks would give 2 WRs with legitimate #1 potential; combined with Smith, Barden and Manningham and Eli would have a very loaded WR group for some time (and great salary cap value).

OT Ciron Black(LSU) could be in the late round 1 mix, primarily to groom as McKenzie's replacement. But a combo of Beatty and Black could certainly allow Diehl to move inside. The Giants certainly love to upgrade the trenches.

DT is very much an option and very likely a key need; even if Cofield is resigned, Robbins is almost certainly gone, plus Bernard is the wrong side of 30.
Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Geno Atkins and Terrence Cody will likely be gone, but there is still plenty of talent around with guys like Marvin Austin (North Carolina), Jeff Owens (Georgia), Brian Price (UCLA), Lawrence Marsh (Florida), DeMarcus Granger (Oklahoma), Jared Odrick (Penn State), Vince Oghobaase (Duke), Al Woods (LSU), Arthur Jones (Syracuse), Boo Robinson (Wake Forest) and Dan Williams (Tennessee) plus guys like Mike Williams (Pittsburgh), Alan-Michael Cash (NC State), Charles Alexander (LSU), Averell Spicer (USC) and Ekom Udofia (Stanford) - there are plenty of DTs to choose from

I think S and CB (Berry amd Mays willl likely be long gone) will be more mid-late round picks. I don't see anyone that particularly grabs me early at this stage (or it being a priority need); I guess Kam Chancellor (Virginia Tech) is an option in the 2nd/3rd, but to be honest I think there are better value at other positions.

I don't see any other positions going early, unless perhaps a stud DE is available (and DE is loaded again next year); George Selvie (Southern Floirida) or Brandon Lang (Troy) may be too good to pass up in the 2nd round

Good stuff Pete, I wish I could add to it but I don't follow college football close enough.

I am going by people's reports. I use alot and make my own opinion based on ability, production etc

but the first thing I had to ask myself is what are likely to be the positions of need for the Giants and which players are likely to be there.

The most obvious need is likely to be DT with both Cofield and Robbins off contract. Robbins won't be back and we haven't extended Cofield yet (and to be honest, I am not sure it will happen). If Cofield hits the open market, he will get good money to play for another team.

Hixon is probably in the same boat, if he hits FA, he will get goof money to play elsewhere. Moss is likely to be not be back either.

Pierce is going to be a 2 down LB, he has been good for us, but I can't help thinking this is his last season in a Giants' uniform.

Carr will probably get a shot to be a starter with another team

I have to be honest, at this stage, I think all 6 players will not be back next year.

But other than that, the Giants roster is in awesome shape with young established starters and great depth at almost every position.

the fact we have 7 draft picks will be very interesting indeed.

Hopefully this will give people some idea of positions to keep an eye on this college season.

by the way, if you aren't sure of the guys for next year's draft, then perhaps this post may give you a little bit of an idea as a starting point.

Another guy I am really intrigued by for next year's draft is S Myron Rolle

he graduated in 2 1/2 years and is taking a year out to study medicine at oxford with the rhodes scholarship

I think he would be a great fit at S with Kenny Phillips

I just read up on him, he seems like he'd be a good pickup. Geez, 2.5 years and a rhodes scholarship, this kid is smart.

He is a nice prospect, and is working out with the same trainer and Santonio Holmes

safety is shaping up pretty well too

another Guy who could come into consideration with a good season is Kam Chancellor

it will be interesting to see how the top contenders go at each position

Here is my very early offseason plan for 2010

1. Sign Eli Manning to contract extension

2. Release Antonio Pierce

3. Resign David Carr, Domenik Hixon, Barry Cofield and CC Brown to reasonable contract extensions

4. Allow Carr, Moss, Robbins, Dockery, Clark and Wilkinson to leave in free agency

key FA Signings -
CB Richard Marshall - likely starter with Webster. would push Ross to #3 and Thomas to #4 giving us a very good group at CB

draft

(using rankings from http://cfn.scout.com/2/856941.html)

1st round - Brandon Spikes MLB, Florida [6-3, 256, 4.69]

2nd round - Sean Weatherspoon WLB, Missouri [6-1, 245, 4.57]

3rd round - Patrick Robinson CB, Florida State [5-11, 194, 4.46]

4th round - Nate Allen FS, South Florida [6-2, 205, 4.55]

5th round - Al Woods DT, LSU [6-4, 323, 5.16]

6th round - Matt Tennant C, Boston College [6-4, 295, 4.96]

7th round - Terrence Austin WR, UCLA [5-11, 178, 4.47]

(Weatherspoon would be too good to pass up as Boley's understudy)

Note: whichever WRs stick on the roster this season should do very well
