Re: How the 2009 Roster is shaping up
to me there is still a glaring weakness in our safety depth
I am not sold on using a CB for safety depth
I hope we bring in another guy, perhaps by trade: Michael Huff anyone?

I'm probably not as skeptical about the safety position as you may be.
With CC Brown Kenny Phillips, and Michael Johnson, we have capable starters. If injuries happen early then there may be reason for concern.
I think the giants will be aggresive at getting after the passer this year with all the available talent they now have on the defensive line.. which in turn may help out our defensive backs duties.

I have no issues with the quality starters we have at safety.
I do have issues with our safety depth
last year we had 5 safeties on the final roster. This year we have only 3 legitimate guys imho. I would like to see a couple of atlented youngsters who can be stud special teamers and step up into the rotation if required.
players get banged up, if any on our top 3 S get banged up, we have depth and rotation issues.
I guess I am overlooking the other obvious option which could be moving Terrell Thomas to FS, but he is very valuable where he is now.
I guess there are still options to add players at S, particularly as teams cut down to their final rosters.
with that said maybe Ingram or Rashad can be the guys, but I am very doubtful
That is why I wouldn't mind trading for Huff (or some other young DB). He may not be a starter, but he is solid depth and special teams; he could also work into the rotation.
To me (and many others) this is the glaring hole in the roster; considering the situation of the roster, it doesn't need to be. I am hoping the Giants address it at some point.

It doesn't need to be a starter at Safety but it shouldn't be an aging stop-gap

Re: How the 2009 Roster is shaping up
I hear you on the safeties Pete, I'd like to have at least 4 capable guys that I know on there. But maybe the other two are solid and I just don't know them, I didn't know much about Johnson when he started.

I see you have 6 wr spot, do you think it will come down to Moss or Tyree; or neither with another guy? I'd hate to lose Tyree and take on 2 rookies and keep another who hasn't done anything yet (manningham) (half the receiving corps), is Tyree healthy and ready to go? Do you think there's any chance that Barden is put on the PS in favor of hixon/smith/nicks/manningham/moss/tyree?

I think this last spot will come down to 3 guys,
Gilbride has already mentioned that Moss will be the 3rd WR in the 3 reciever sets at least going into camp. He has the inside running for a spot.
Tyree is a solid vet, but I don't think we can justify him a roster spot over the others unless he really has a great camp
The long shot is Micah Rucker
Tyree is a good special teamer and ok reciever. but we have guys like Goff, Kehl, Andre Brown, Ware, Beckum, Sintim, DeOssie, Kiwanuka, CC Brown, Thomas, Dockery etc for special teams
Barden won't make the PS squad, besides he will be too much of a redzone weapon.
I dont have an issue with the rookies
firstly Hixon, Smith, Moss and Manningham would be the guys at least initially. Nicks and Barden will work their way into the rotation as they develop; Nicks is probably the most NFL ready of any of the WRs this year, he should contribute reasonably quicly. I have alot of confidence in our young guys stepping up with the extra opportunity.
I think a big part of the offense will be getting more out of RB and TE in the passing game. Beckum gives some interesting options.
I also wouldn't completely rule out a trade for Edwards or Boldin if their price comes down (remember the timing of the shockey trade last year?); with the draft we had, we could include Hixon, Moss or Tyree in the deal Robbins or even Cofield could also be optionsl. It depends how serious the Giants were after a WR, I tend to think there was a fair amount of fire around all that smoke.
but the key will be once again our ground game, which is very solid.

I am starting to come around with the safeties (although still not entirely happy); we have 3 guys who can start (with good starting experience) plus some ok youngsters like Rashad. I guess it isn't too bad, but I would prefer more depth.
I am underwhelmed with thhe CBs we drafted as well, particularly with Dockery off contract after the season.
I just think our secondary depth is a little thin, but we have young guys, hopefully they will step up

Re: How the 2009 Roster is shaping up
I am currently thinking that Robbins will start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, much like Tyree last year.
He will be given a chance to get healthy and contribute in the back half of the season
some info on PUP
"Physically Unable to Perform is the term for a rule in the National Football League which allows teams to designate players as "Physically Unable to Perform" or "PUP". Once they are designated as such, they are prohibited from practicing with the team. They can, however, rehabilitate and participate in team meetings. If a player begins training camp on the PUP list, they can be moved to the active roster at any time, even after one practice. A player is not allowed to be placed on the PUP list if they start training camp on the active roster.
A player who begins the season on the PUP list must sit out his team's first six games. After that point, the player is allowed to practice with the team through Week 10 of the NFL season, and can be activated any time within that window. If the player is not activated by Week 10, he must stop practicing and is unavailable to be moved to the active roster for the remainder of the season."

I think there is a good chance that both Boley and Robbins will likely be on the PUP list at the start of the season.
Both are almost certainly going to miss all of training camp

Interesting note.Big_Pete wrote:got it, Alex Derenthal was released
The release of Derenthal leaves the Giants with no true back-up center at this time.
I guess the Giants feel good about the experiment of Adam Koets moving from tackle to center. However, mini camp notes from some of the beat writers on Koets transition wasn't that impressive.
Seubert may also be a 2nd option of sliding over to center if injuries occur.

At this point Seubert is the backup center, then Snee
The Giants are hoping that Koets can make the transition to backup center
The key thing is what will happen once O'Hara starts slowing down (which could be soon).
Personally I wouldn't mind the idea of Snee at OC and beefing up up RG with Diehl at LG, Beatty LT and Seubert as primary backup. Another option could be to flick McKenzie into RG and get a RT (but all this for another day)

Re: How the 2009 Roster is shaping up
updated
I would like to see Terrell Thomas moved to FS, I think that is a better fit for him, but I am not sure that will happen at the moment.
But as the nickle back, he can likely do a bit of both
