Giants/Bears Recap Empty Giants/Bears Recap

Post  56 Crazed Dogs Sun Aug 23, 2009 9:21 am

Not a good night for the G-men offense.

Eli Manning had absolutely no time to throw the ball as did none of the other Giants qb's last night neither. The O-line was hideous. The worse part, is that it was the outside starting tackles (Diehl/McKenzie) making the most mistakes.

Rookie OT, William Beatty did not have a good night at all. He got beat by his man mutch of the night, as did Guy Whimper.

Any positive plays that came were from the running backs. Jacobs continued to show his abilty to pound the ball with aggression, and even knock linebackers such as Brian Urlacher right out of the way.
Bradshaw took over and did his thing. He continued to cut and weave, break off a big run, and even play as a wide receiver.
Danny Ware continues his strong play and even plucked a hard to catch ball in the air while going across the middle of the field.

The running backs abilities to catch the ball this year is going to be a real assett to this team.

The Giants front defense got beat up bad leaving wide enough holes to drive a truck through.

Blackburn started at mlb in place of Pierce, Initially, I thought he played very well as he flew to the ball on nearly every play, but as the game wore down so did he. Chase was having a heck of a time getting off his blocks and relocating the ball

Sintim got more playing time than last week, but unlike last week he made very little impact and just looked like another rookie out there.

Wilkinson had a pretty strong game.

Danny Ware returned the opening kick-off and broke some fine tackles and showed some leaping ability. He nearly took it to the house. Clearly the best return by any giant this season.

Moss and Manningham continue to prove nothing at punt returning and Moss at at kick returning. Manningham muffed a punt but recovered his own fumble. Moss just gets knocked down at first contact. The coaches are giving them opportunity but they're not taking advantage.
I will be very dissapointed if there is no shown improvement with neither and the job doesn't go to Hixon. Hixon is fine at both duties

Giants/Bears Recap Empty Re: Giants/Bears Recap

here is a lettr I sent into inside football.com

Here are my thoughts on the Bears preseason game.

The Good: The RBs have really stood out again. Boothe and Reyes were solid with the first team. We had a good outing in the running game. I really like how the RBs are all being used a lot more in the passing game. It is also good to see we won the turnover battle. Our kick returners look very promising.

The Bad: Our front seven gave up too many big running plays on defense. Our pass protection was poor. Our pass rush was average at best, it certainly didn't adjust well to a mobile QB.

Discipline is also a problem, we had far too many penalties. There were a lot of many missed tackles.

The Ugly: The passing game was under so much pressure, we didn't really get a chance to see what the WRs can do in game situations. In particular, I haven't seen a lot of the highly publicized deep passing attack in the preseason games so far. At times it seemed that we were dominated physically in the trenches on both sides of the ball. I know we aren't healthy, but considering our depth I expected a better showing.

I know we are using a lot of vanilla schemes in preseason without a lot of wrinkles, but there are some areas regarding football fundamentals that must be improved. Some of these issues may particularly come down to using younger, more inexperienced guys a lot more that we otherwise would due to injuries.

Regardless we need to improve, a lot of players need to step up if they want a roster spot. It is certainly not time to hit the panic buttons, I am sure these will be addressed over the back end of the preseason. I am still very confident on the Giants having a very good season. – Peter M.

I also thought Terrell Thomas and CC Brown looked real solid. It wouldn't dissapoint me if they had to become starters at some point in the season.

Only got to watch the first half, pretty much the whole team looked awful. I agree though, Thomas and CC Brown looked good. At one point it seemed that Brown was the only defender who wanted to make a tackle.

Our RBs looked good, both in the ground game and passing game.

It looks like we will need our young DTs to step up; although Robbins and Bernard should be working more into the rotation as they get healthier

I expect big things out of our RBs again. Between the 3 of them, BJ Bradshaw and Ware, they should get at least 2300 yards or so. [Last year the big 3 put up 2469 yards] If the line and RBs stay healthy, there's no reason for them not to put up big numbers.

I agree

our RBs as a group should combine for around 2500 yards rushing and perhaps 1000 yards recieving (going bt how much we passed to them in preseason)

Good call, Eli seems to be looking at the RBs more in the passing game now, which I think is very good. That was one thing that hurt the offense when it transferred from Collins to Eli was not checking down to the RBs enough. Tiki was great in the passing game then became a non-factor there. If Eli can consistently check down to the RBs at the right time, he will increase his passing percentage and get more first downs.

I wouldn't be surprised if we got the kind of production Tiki used get in the passing game from our RB group

I am still waiting to see the much publisized deep passing game from our WRs, but that should come long ok.

remember Coughlin is notorious for using vanilla basic packages in preseason rather than heavily customise game plans for each opponent.

Tiki was a stud out of the backfield, no offense to the current RBs, but they won't get Tiki-like production in the passing game, not yet at least.

I too want to see some deep passes. Manningham, Nicks, Barden and Hixon should all be deep threats; I'd like to see Eli test the Jets deep this next game.

I am not so sure

As a group, I wouldn't be surprised if Jacobs, Bradshaw and Ware combined for 1000 yds on 75+ receptions in the passing game; that is tiki like production

I agree Pete, that would be Tiki like production, but I don't see it happening. But on the other hand, with this unproven receiving corps, Eli may look to the RBs more often, so you might be right.

The startting point is not that bad from last season

Derrick Ward had 41 rec for 384 yds
Brandon Jacobs had 6 rec for 36 yards and Ahmad Bradshaw had 5 rec 42
that is a combined 52 rec for 462 yards; roughly 30 yards /game

now in preseason so far (2 games)
Danny Ware has 6 rec for 73yds
Ahmad Bradshaw has 4 rec for 16 yds
Brandon Jacobs has 2 rec for 29 yds

that is around 60 yds/game combined which is on track for 960 yards for the season

the RBs as a group are on track for 120 yds/game rushing == 1920 for the season

remember this includes the Bears game, which we will likely do alot better.
