If 2010 is uncapped, what it means for the Giants

Post  Big_Pete on Sat Sep 05, 2009 8:53 am

Roger Goodell has stated that he expected 2010 to be an uncapped year

If that is the case, from http://www.usatoday.com/sports/footb...bor-deal_N.htm

Despite the disparities, it's difficult to predict how an uncapped 2010 would unfold, given the conditions attached to an uncapped year:

  • The top eight playoff finishers from the previous season would be allowed to sign free agents only at the rate at which they lose them.

  • Players would need six NFL seasons to be eligible for free agency, rather than four.

  • Each team would be allowed to restrict two eligible free agents with "franchise" or "transition" player tags, rather than one.
If 2010 is uncapped, Cofield, Wilkinson, CC Brown, Dockery, D Johnson, Matthews, Ware, Whimper, Hagan, Moss would not be free agents

It would mean our only free agents are Carr, Reyes, Robbins and Clark. If we are among the top 8 playoff teams, we could also only sign new free agents as they sign elsewhere.

Also expect some teams to become stingier with contracts

also revenue sharing will almost certainly be gone
