Giants Scouting Report Empty Giants Scouting Report

Post  56 Crazed Dogs Sun Sep 27, 2009 11:27 am

Raymond James Stadium, today, 1 o’clock

TV: Ch. 5 Radio: WCBS-FM 101.1

Line: Giants by 6 1/2

What’s at stake?

Giants

With two tough divisional games behind them, the Giants start a streak of three games against some of the perceived lesser teams of the NFL. Next Sunday they will visit Kansas City, with Oakland coming into Giants Stadium the Sunday after that. So it’s not conceivable they can get off to a 5-0 start before they have to fly to New Orleans to meet up with the Saints and Jeremy Shockey. With Atlanta, San Diego, Minnesota and Philadelphia (twice) to come, the Giants can’t afford to let this game get away.

Buccaneers

Rookie coach Raheem Morris of Irvington, two years younger than CB Ronde Barber, is looking for his first win. And the Jersey guy certainly would love for it to come against the Giants. The Buccaneers are waiting for this year’s No. 1 draft pick, Josh Freeman, to take over at quarterback and lead them back to the postseason. Yet they certainly would like to collect as many wins possible with Byron Leftwich in there.

Key matchups

Giants LT David Diehl vs. Bucs RE Gaines Adams

Morris was sending a message to Gaines, the Bucs’ No. 1 draft pick from 2007, when he said, "Right now he’s not getting the production as far as not touching the quarterback. The tackles, the sacks — he’s not getting any of that. He’s just not playing up to par right now." If that doesn’t prod Adams, who had a good year in 2008, to play better, what will? Diehl probably will be facing a fired-up pass rusher today.

Bucs LT Donald Penn vs. Giants RE Osi Umenyiora

Tom Coughlin did not have to say anything to get his right end worked up. Umenyiora knew he had a very subpar performance Sunday night against Dallas, and like Adams should have something to prove. Penn has developed into a solid left tackle on an offensive line that has allowed just two sacks of the statuesque Leftwich in 93 pass plays.

How they’ll win

Giants

It’s expected the Giants will break out of their early-season running game slump, and this would be a good day to do it. The Buccaneers have been vulnerable on defense and rank 31st overall (only Houston is worse) in total yardage yielded. They have been equally bad against the run and the pass. The Giants, who have been leaning on the passing game more than they would like in the first two games, may try to get Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw going in this game.

Buccaneers

If Tampa Bay is to win, the Bucs will have to control the ball and keep the Giants’ offense off the field. They rolled up 174 rushing yards against Dallas in the opener and Morris admits they got off their running game too quickly last week against Buffalo. Cadillac Williams and former Giant Derrick Ward provide a good 1-2 punch going against a defense that allowed a staggering 251 yards to the Cowboys Sunday night.
