Rapid Reaction: Saints 48, Giants 27

October 18, 2009 4:46 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

NEW ORLEANS -- If the Giants are the best team in the NFC East, it's time to reevaluate what we think of the division. In what was billed as a measuring stick game for both teams, the Giants didn't even belong on the same field as the Saints.

From the opening drive, Saints quarterback Drew Brees served notice that he would shred what we believed to be one of the best defenses in the league. Once Brees located where Giants safety C.C. Brown was lining up, he went to town. I've never seen a defensive back have a worse game. Early on, Brees found Lance Moore for big gains. He then started dialing up Marques Colston, who's emerged as one of the best receivers in the game.

The worst part was that Tom Coughlin and offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride somehow let themselves get lured into a track meet with the Saints. Instead of trying to slow things down with the running game, Gilbride tried to match Brees throw for throw. On this day, that was a huge miscalculation.

Saints coach Sean Payton softened up the Giants' defense with the downfield passing game and then he gashed them with the running game. The Giants better hope they just saw the best team in the league. Otherwise, they have a ton of work to do.

Brees was 23-of-30 for 369 yards and four touchdowns. Payton mercifully removed him from the game in the fourth quarter. The Giants actually had a brief chance to stay in this game late in the first half, but Eli Manning fumbled after being sacked by safety Roman Harper. The Saints quickly scored to make it 34-17 at halftime -- and didn't look back.

Giants backup David Carr tacked on a late touchdown pass to Hakeem Nicks to make the score look a little better. But there's no dressing up this performance. The Giants were dominated at every turn.

We knew the Saints had an explosive passing game. I don't understand why we tries to match their style of play.

We should have run it alot more, particularly with Kendrick Clancy out.
That is the Giants style of play, getting physical and controlling the ball and time of possession. That was the key to success in this game

we threw the ball 36 times and ran it just 19 times for 84yds (4.42yds/carry)

time of possession was a awefull - NYG 23:53 ; NO 36:07

I think the Coaches have to take some of the wrap for this one, we abandoned what has worked well for us and played the style of football that played right ino the Saints strengths.

The Saints played the perfect game no doubt about it.
When the Giants had a chance to go into the lockeroom only 10 points down in the first half we didn't take advantage. I truly believe this is what led to a second half meltdown.
The Saints exploited CC Brown for what he isn't (a cover safety) Brown reminded me of our last defensive back with the same last name... Ralph Brown or as I used to call him "Toast Brown"
Terrible performance by the defense... just terrible. Linebackers were putrid especially Danny Clark.
I don't know what else to say.
The Giants just got hit by a train. Mad

I guess there were some positives out of the game (Hixon, Nicks and Carr)

We knew we were going to lose at some point, but it was the total dominance that was surprising

This is a huge wake up call for the team

The Giants will work on it and rebound

one thing is certain, complacency won't be a problem for the rest of the year

It could have been worse I guess. At least the Giants didn't get beat as bad as the Titans.. 59-00 affraid
If there was one bright spot then yes it was Hixon. He clearly showed his dominance over Sinorice Moss returning for us.

I had to quit watching the massacre before Carr and Nicks played catch so I can't comment. maybe I'll bring myself to watching the 4th quarter on my dvr sometime in the future

Man, tough game to watch. It seemed everything went the Saints' way and nothing the Giants. Well that just happens sometimes, but its still early in the season and hopefully if the Giants meet them again it will by in East Rutherford.

Lone bright spot, Hixon returning kicks again. Every time I saw him return one I was glad to see him back, but pissed that he wasn't always doing it, excluding the injury time.
