Falcons cut S Jimmy Williams - should the giants consider him? Empty Falcons cut S Jimmy Williams - should the giants consider him?

Post  Big_Pete Wed Jun 18, 2008 5:53 pm

The Falcons cut loose disappointing S Jimmy Williams, the 36th overall pick in the 2007 draft. Williams reportedly moved into new head coach Mike Smith's doghouse after showing up at a voluntary minicamp nearly 20 pounds heavier than expected. He was drafted out of Virginia Tech as a cornerback but was switched by the Falcons to safety prior to the 2007 season. He has started seven times in 27 career games.

Fair enough that he has under performed; but I don't think the Falcons over the last 2 years have exactly been a healthy environment.
I think it is worth the Giants looking at him.

He may have alot of work to do; but with the right coaching staff and team mates that might be quite possible.

He would have to compete for a roster spot, he would have to work hard, might be low on our depth chart for a while; but if the light comes on he would certainly be a big asset to our secondary. He also fits the bigger style of DB that spags prefers.

We have had alot of success with players with questionable character issues (eg Burress, Manningham and Bradshaw) in Coughlin's team focussed atmosphere.

I think so. I liked him in college, thought he would make a better pro safety than pro corner. Spags could turn his career around as long as Williams is willing to put forth the effort.

I agree with you; I really liked him as well

also in our system with very physical corners; he could play either.

maybe the fact he would have to work really hard to earn everything may make, Coughlin's team culture and Reese's tight reigns is exactly what he needs to turn it around.

In any event he would have to clear waivers from other teams; although I am not sure many teams will want to roll the dice with him - particuarly with the tight limit on roster sizes.

I believe we assume his rookie contract (without the guaranteed money) so it is low risk against potentially high pay off

maybe strahan's vacant roster will come in handy after all?

Thiniking about it - we will almost certainly take 10 DBs on the final roster.

at safety it is very likely that Knight, Butler, Johnson and Phillips are 4 spots

at CB it likely that Ross, Webster, Thomas and Madison have spots.

it means that Dockety, McQuarters and Williams would likely be competing for 2 roster spots; I think williams can do that, but it would be a challenge for sure. He could also end up in the mix at safety for sure as well.

if we picked him up and Williams can get back down to around 215lb (which he was drafted at in 2006); our possible secondary is rather intimidating - particularly with our press coverage and pass rush - think about it:

CB

Aaron Ross, 6-0 193, 25
Corey Webster, 6-0, 202, 26
Sam Madison, 5-11, 180, 34
Terrell Thomas, 6-1, 198, 23
RW McQuarters, 5-10, 194 31
Jimmy Williams, 6-2, 215, 24

S

James Butler, 6-3, 215, 25
Michael Johnson, 6-2, 211, 24
Sammy Knight, 6-1, 215, 32
Kenny Phillips, 6-2, 208, 21

That is one young and extremely physical secondary

He showed up to mini camp, after skipping voluntary workouts, 20 pounds overweight and now clocks in at 240. For a defensive back.

For reference..

Madison - 180
Ross - 193
Mc25s - 194
Thomas - 198
Webster -202
Dockery - 188

Phillips - 208
Butler - 215
Johnson - 211
Knight - 215

Where exactly can a DB weighing 240 play? No thanks. I'll pass on a guy who's got a huge ego and can't stay in shape to play professional football.

here is the recent news articles on williams from nfldraftscout

06/18/08 - DB Jimmy Williams was released by the Falcons after the team was pleased with the play of several youngsters this offseason. Williams didn't endear himself to the new coaching staff by showing up to minicamp 20 pounds overweight and then missing two days of a three-day voluntary program. Thomas DeCoud, a third-round choice, looks like the real deal at free safety. Antoine Harris is next in line at free safety behind newcomer Erik Coleman and DeCoud and Harris is a likely keeper because he can play both safety spots, nickel back and was solid on special teams last season.

06/17/08 - DB Jimmy Williams was released by the Falcons after the team was pleased with the play of several youngsters this offseason. Williams, meanwhile, continues to get minimal repetitions, especially now that DeCoud has made fairly rapid strides.

06/12/08 - FS Jimmy Williams, Atlanta's top pick in the 2006 draft, could face his release if the Falcons' young safeties continue to perform in training camp as well as they have in offseason sessions. Williams, meanwhile, continues to get minimal repetitions, especially now that DeCoud has made fairly rapid strides.

04/17/08 - FS Jimmy Williams, the Falcons' top draft pick in 2006, did not attend the final two workouts of the team's minicamp after being present on Day 1. No reason was given for his absence other than coach Mike Smith saying the workouts are voluntary and that players don't have to be there. The coaching staff -- Smith met with Williams after the first practice -- did not seem bothered at all, which signaled that Williams gave a good reason why he had to leave or that they have more pressing things to concern themselves with. Williams and his agent could not be reached. Williams, who was selected in the second round out of Virginia Tech as a cornerback, was moved to free safety last season and was given countless opportunities to unseat starter Chris Crocker. He never did and was even rendered inactive on game days twice because of poor effort on special teams. Williams was supposed to get the opportunity to compete with free-agent acquisition Erik Coleman for the starting job but at mini camp, we worked behind Coleman and Antoine Harris.

12/31/07 - S Jimmy Williams, a converted cornerback, probably won't be released prematurely but he could need a strong offseason to impress the new coaching staff. Williams, the team's first pick (second round) in 2006 could not break into the lineup, even as a rotational backup and was inactive for two games because of poor special teams play.

I don't care who we sign James Butler is a abomination and needs to cut. Phillips can start from day one hell, Sam Garnes and Shaun Williams did. Just please i am begging please i can't not watch another year of James Butler trying to play safety or in a Giants uniform for that matter, make him the popcorn vendor or something please just get him off the field.

AGREED! Butler does not have what it takes to be a full time starter, and Phillips could probably carry the load from day 1.

I say give this kid a shot, what's there to lose. If he doesn't straighten out then they cut him, big deal. The kids got talent, lets see if he's willing to put it to some use.

Nothing to lose, but considering he came into camp 20 pounds overweight and didn't attend 2 voluntary days after he was there says he isn't willing to put his talent to use.

Not to mention he hasn't done well in 2 systems and was inactive a few times because of poor special teams play. If there's one thing Coughlin wants its guys to contribute on special teams. Jimmy Williams doesn't fit that bill.

To be fair he was in the Falcons system and he did have some issues coming out of college. I think he needed the kind of attention we have given Bradshaw and Manningham. But the Falcons wasn't like that at all; they have had huge amounts of turmoil. Also consider his veteran mentor in the secondary - DeAngelo Hall - harding a shinging example of rolling up the sleeves and doing whatever is needed for the team.
The flacons have disintegrated; so I can understand him not wanting to play; particularly when it was clear the falcons were moving in a different direction.

I think with Coughlin, Spagnuolo, Giunta and Merritt plus the work ethic/leadeship from all the other guys in the secondary, Jimmy Williams would have a genuine chance to turn it all around. He still is in just his 2nd year of playing.

As far as the weight issue; Fred Robbins comes to mind - he had that one year where he was badly out of shape etc - but that was an anomoly, he has since more than proven himself on the field.

Williams was a very physical hard hitting CB coming out of college. That is the ideal style of player for Spags' press defenses. If he gets his head screwed on right and is willing to work hard he could realise his potential. The think the Giants are one of the few teams where that could legitimately happen.

as far as special teams; I think that is all about attitude. I think our coaches could sort that out (or he is out)

but that is just my thoughts. Smile

I'd rather not waste a roster spot on a guy who has to lose at least 30 pounds before the season starts.

Jimmy Williams has to get to 220. Losing 20 pounds wouldn't be difficult at all. He would compete with Butler at S but his versatility is a plus. Jimmy Williams has far better potential while Butler has reached his, IMO. Its a low risk gamble with a possible high reward.
