Coughlin Fires Waufle
defensive line coach Mike Waufle was fired today. I guess it's time to get down to the root of the problem and get some new blood in there with a fresh start.

I didn't expect this, although to some degree it is understandable.
I like Mike Wauffle alot , but there is certainly a strong case to shake up how things are done along the Dline

by the way, I don't think the coach culling is finished yet, I think we will see a few more get the chop

Sheridan getting fired was a no-brainer. Waufle was surprising to me too, but then again, the d-line play was pretty poor this year. If anything, it'll be a big wake up call to the d-lineman to wake up.

here is an interesting letter to the editor ans response from inside football about Waufle's departure; there is probably something of this involved

I just have a question; do you have any insight as to why Mike Waufle was fired? The firing of Sheridan was necessary and predictable. (Although I suspect he is a better coach than we saw this year) On the other hand, Mike Waufle is well respected by some great players and his long-term record with this team is very good. It is hard for me to believe that this year's downturn is his fault, in light of the failure of the linebackers and safeties. Is there something not apparent to the fans that you are aware of. Frankly this move troubles me and makes me wonder what Coughlin, who I greatly respect, is doing. I would really appreciate your insight and thoughts on this question. You routinely seem to have a finger on the pause of this team. -- Todd C.
Todd, the only logical conclusion I can come up with related to a rather telling quote by team co-owner John Mara, who said, “We spent a lot of money this past offseason in free agency. We didn’t get quite the results that we anticipated.”
Two of the big money guys were defensive linemen – Chris Canty and Rocky Bernard. Yes Canty was injured most of the year, but when he was in there, he was usually a non-factor while Bernard never got untracked.(Further, the team claims einjuries are not an excuse.)
So if you throw in that coupled with the demotion of Osi Umenyiora (another big money guy), then I can see where they can justify the firing of Waufle, even though I wonder how much of it was him, how much ws the scheme and how much ws the players...
