2010 Giants Team - 1st Feb

Post  Big_Pete on Sun Jan 31, 2010 9:13 am

Well today is my Bday and the senior bowl is in the books, so I am doing my latest installment of thinking for the 2010 Giants

The first thing to remember though is that the team should be a lot healthier this year. For example if guys like Ross, Canty, Tuck, Alford, Umenyiora, Phillips, Hedgecock, Jacobs, Bradshaw and Brown are 100% healthy and have a full offseason, we already have a substantial upgrade over the team that ended last year.

Naturally this is all purely speculation and the Giants are still evaluating everything, but here are some thoughts on free agency. Firstly, I expect Reese will continue his policy of filling needs in free agency and building the team through the draft.

The Giants are unlikely to rely on rookies to start as we upgrade positions, I think we will continue the habit of developing rookies behind veteran starters. This means we will need to bring in veterans to fill needs if the current guys are not viewed as the answer (we do have some decent young talent).

The most obvious needs at the moment seem to be at LB (where we will be likely replacing two starters) and Safety, we have good veteran talent at all other positions. However, without a new CBA in place, the options to upgrade positions in free agency is very limited; in fact the only Free Agent whom I think is a significant upgrade is Karlos Dansby, and he would not be cheap and be in demand. We could sign RFAs but they will likely require premium draft pick compensation, which I think is rather unlikely.

There does seem to be a couple of intriguing trade options, S Kerry Rhodes and LB Derrick Johnson both seem to be out of favor with their current teams and either could likely be available for reasonable value trade-wise.

One position that is reasonably uncertain and that is whether Jeff Feagles returns or finally decides to hang up the books. We probably won't know for a little while either way. It will be interesting to see how things unfold over the next month or so.

These are my current thoughts on the 2010 Giants

Positional Moves:
Beatty to LT, Diehl to LG

Sintim to RDE

Free Agency

Sign LB Karlos Dansby (Cardinals)
Overhauling the LBs will be the priority this offseason. The cardinals have said they aren't going to franchise him, making Dansby is the best option available (and probably the only legitimate free agency option) and a great fit at SLB. Although he won't be cheap.

Sign DT Richard Seymour (Raiders)
Seymour wants out from the raiders and I think it unlikely they will want to pay over $12m for the DE franchise tag. The Giants would be a good fit for Seymour and he can be the disruptive prescence inside.

Sign S George Wilson (Bills)
A restricted free agent, but the Bills will not invest heavily to keep this former udfa. Wilson knows Fewell’s systems and will help the secondary make the transition. He also provides quality depth and special teams play.

Sign RB Brian Westbrook (Eagles)
There are alot of good vet RBs likely to be cut this offseason including Westbrook, Willis McGahee, Ladanian Tomlinsom, Thomas Jones, Marion Barber, Lawrence Maroney and Julius Jones.
Westbrook is a good complement to our RBs

Sign K Matt Stover (Colts)
Lawrence Tynes has been adequate at best, I think the Giants will look to upgrade.

Resign QB David Carr (if not a solid veteran)

Draft

1. MLB Rolando McClain, Alabama (6-4, 258, 4.60)
There is a lot of speculation that he will go earlier, but I am not sure. There is alot of quality talent at more premium positions and teams have more urgent needs elsewhere. (LBs have tended to slip in the draft in recent years, MLBs even more so (almost all have slipped to the 2nd round). McClain gives us that quality anchor to lead our defense for the future.

2. FS Earl Thomas, Texas (5-10, 197, 4.45)
Thomas is a little undersized at safety (with CB size) and is very raw. He will take time to develop. He is a good option for us as the single deep safety. The safety class is incredibly deep with talent and alot of teams will prefer bigger safeties. Once again there is far too much talent for the 1st round.

3. TE Rob Gronkowski, Arizona (6-6, 265, 4.75)
Gronkowski is a quality all round TE and is great value here He is a top talent that slips due to his coming back from serious injury. He gives us two quality TEs as well as Beckum's H-Back versatility.

4. WLB Rennie Curran, Georgia (5-11, 225, 4.60)
Curran is a little undersized at LB which means he is not a good fit for alot of teams, but he is a tackling machine that makes plays all over the field. He is a good option to backup Boley and also upgrade special teams.

5. OT Jared Veldheer, Hillsdale (6-9, 321, 4.90)
Veldheer is a small school tackle with good physical tools. Like Barden, he will be a raw and need time to develop.

6. DE Austin Lane, Murray St (6-7, 270, 4.60)
Lane is a small school DE with impressive physical tools and ability to get to the QB. The DE class this year is exceptionally deep with talent. Like Barden, he will need time to develop, but should also impact on special teams.

7. P Zoltan Mesko, Michigan (6-5, 231, 4.75)
A stud punter with a booming leg and terrific hang-time

Happy Birthday Pete and treat yourself to something good. Here you go I hired a clown for you. haha

I like the linebacker rotation you have there with Dansby and Mclain. I think that would give us some decent depth for years to come.

Yeah I like that LB rotation as well.

I wouldn't overlook Curran as backup WLB as well.

It is worth remembering that our starters for next year will almost certainly be either n the roster already or veterans we bring in.

Well Pete, I actually dont like any of the FA signings and Im not happy with the draft picks either. Although all are good players I rather not spend a ton of money on players who are about to be or already are on the wrong side of 30. I'm personally not as high on MCClain as a lot of these draft "experts" are. I think there are better options. Also I can't imagine Earl Thomas falling that far back but you never know. And I dont like the idea of taking a TE at all.

Yeah I gotta agree with you in hindsight, although the free agency options are limited. I gotta admit I was overly ambitious

I prefer my earlier one.

I will probably do a new version on the weekend

completely agree on McClain, I am a little unsure of him, I think the Alabama system overly protected him

I will have a better feel for players then
