2010 offseason mainly through the draft? Empty 2010 offseason mainly through the draft?

Post  Big_Pete Sat Feb 06, 2010 10:38 am

interesting comments from http://trainathought.insidefootball.com/2010/02/super-bowl-week-round-up.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Train-aThought+%28Inside+Football%27s+%22Train-a+Thought%22%29

Random Musing. Don’t expect a wild free agency period this year given the changes brought about by the uncapped season. As was initially reported, 212 players who otherwise would have been unrestricted will be restricted, as in 2010, players will need six seasons to reach unrestricted free agency. Moreover, considering a player reaches his peak after about four seasons, which means the talent pool is not going to be as rich as it’s been in past years.

That’s why this year I think the draft is going to be more important than ever. Further, I would not be surprised if the Giants try to swing a couple of trades at some of their excess positions tin the hopes of getting more draft picks. Whether they’re successful is another story, but right now if I had to guess, I would say the giants probably aren’t going to log the same amount of activity they did last year, instead focusing on the draft instead.

2010 offseason mainly through the draft? Empty Re: 2010 offseason mainly through the draft?

I think these musings are pretty much on the money, they certainly are along the lines of what I am thinking.

Further, I would not be surprised if the Giants try to swing a couple of trades at some of their excess positions tin the hopes of getting more draft picks.

I think the Giants are going to keep their core of Guys, but there are some trade options. It will depend on how the Giants feel about players and depth.

One thing that will help trades is the lack of a new CBA. This severely reduced the lack of free agents available (particularly younger ones) plus the top eight playoff teams are severely restricted.

Trade Possibilities/Surplus positions speculation

DE: Umenyiora or Kiwanuka (perhaps for a 2nd and 5th)

I have to admit that Osi looks the more likely at this point. If Osi's situation is resolved, then Kiwanuka is a expendable; he isn't an explosive edge rusher and is off contract after 2010.

Potential interested teams:
(3-4 OLB) New England, San Diego, San Fransisco, Miami, Cleveland, Kansas City, Denver, NY Jets, Arizona
(4-3 DE) St Louis, Indianapolis, Tennessee, Jacksonville

my guess is this is about 80 percent likely at this point.

WR: Mario Manningham (perhaps for a 2nd)

There is alot to like about Mario and he is still improving, but we have alot of talent at WR he seems the most likely to be a trade option as he seems the most expendable in a very crowded WR group. Smith and Nicks are the starters and Nicks' role will continue to grow, Hixon and Barden are potential #3s etc. It normally takes time for a rookie WR to develop, Manningham can contribure right away. Of all these listed here, this is the most unlikely imho.

Potential interested teams:

Cincinnati, Seattle, New England, Denver, Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Maimi, NY Jets, Carolina, Oakland, Baltimore, Houston.

my guess is this is about 40 percent likely at this point.

CB: Aaron Ross (perhaps for a 2nd round pick)

The secondary is going to be overhauled, probably through the draft. Thomas has performed exceeedingly well plus Ross is of contract in the near future. Alot of teams need CB

Potential Interested Teams:

Altanta, Detroit, Houston, Tampa Bay, St Louis, Tennessee, Kansas City, Baltimore, Oakland, Seattle, Green Bay, NY Jets, San Fransisco

my guess is this is about 60 percent likely at this point.

RB: Brandon Jacobs or Ahmad Bradshaw (perhaps for a 2nd round pick)

This all depends on how the front office see the position. Brandon will be healthy, but at the same time we need more production from our running game so this could be a shake up. It may also come back to value for money and the long term thoughts on our running game.

Potential Interested Teams:
San Diego, New England, Chicago, Seattle, Houston, Kansas City

my guess is this is about 60 percent likely at this point

Others:

Sinorice Moss, Guy Whimper and Gerris Wilkison for late round picks

I have to admit that I am not sure how I feel about Manningham or Jacobs/Bradshaw. But I do get the feeling that either Jacobs or Bradshaw will be expendable.

2010 offseason mainly through the draft? Empty Re: 2010 offseason mainly through the draft?

Bradshaw is staying put this year.

Next year is when the Giants will have to make the tough decision since Bradshaw will be a free agent.

We have no proven depth behind Bradshaw at this point so it makes sense to keep him.

Also, players in the last year of their contract usually give you the most of their ability since they are playing for a new contract.

This is why I'm not totally against drafting a running back early such as CJ Spiller. That guy is a triple threat in run, pass, and returning.

I'm not a big fan of trading good players if you don't have to.

Osi and Kiwi are both good players and have rather cheap contracts.

We should be able to afford to give Kiwi a fair contract mid season if he performs well this season under Fewell.

The more I think about it. We are really blessed to have Tuck, Osi, & Kiwi on this team.

Yes, last year was a flop but we need to get better penetration out of our DT's. We need a real run stuffer that can also collapse the pocket.

We didn't get that out of any of our tackles last year.

Oh.. and no way to getting rid of Manningham.
Why break up chemistry between QB and WR's if you don't have to.
Manningham will only get even better next season.

Also no to getting rid of Ross. Ross is a decent starter at cb and we all know about our depth at safety.

Ross is light years ahead of Bruce Johnson. who constantly got burnt last year and never made one big play.

To me Osi is that rare case where he brings more value to our team if we can use him in a trade to improve other positions. Osi's value will start to depreciate after this off season. I really think its best for the team to unload him now. He lost his starting spot last year to Kiwi. I really don't think Coughlin has any intentions giving it back. If thats the case than we are trading a 3rd down pass rusher for one, possibly two starters.

Manningham should not go anywhere. Same with Bradshaw and Ross. Ross needs to stay healthy and if he does we have 3 very good CBs. With a better pass rush and better support over the top we have the makings of a very good pass D.

IMO The only other realistic trade is Cofield. His value is better than the 4th we spent on him and I honestly think we could get a 3rd for him, potentially a late 2nd. I know Im shooting high but he has the potential to play the 5 technique in a 3-4 and either DT position in the 4-3. He'll be only 26 in march. If we dont tender and trade him he's free to go next season and we get nothing.

I believe Hixon is a Free Agent and not restricted but im not 100% on that. If a RFA he brings good value as well.

All great points; don't get me wrong, I really like Manningham, Bradshaw, Kiwanuka and Ross.

if there is a new CBA hixon is an unrestricted free agent as he has 4 year in the NFL, without a new CBA you need 6 years experience to be a unrestricted free agent.

I still wouldn't be surprised if there are a few trades.

I don't see Cofield being traded, but I could see a team signing him of a RFA tender and giving draft pick compensation

anyway random thoughts in a slow period
