Geoff Pope arrested

Post  56 Crazed Dogs on Sun Jun 22, 2008 11:13 am

Geoffrey Pope, a cornerback who played in two playoff games for the New York Giants this year, was arrested and faces felony charges after he was accused of hitting a man over the head with a champagne bottle in a Detroit club Friday night.

The victim was the son of longtime Detroit newscaster Carmen Harlan. The assault opened up a gash that required 28 stitches to close.

Pope, a Detroit native, attended Howard University and had an unexceptional career, but he became a pro prospect with a blazing 4.29-second 40-yard dash. He spent time on the Dolphins' and Giants' practice squads in 2007, but never played in a game until he got on the field for the Giants in the divisional playoffs against the Cowboys.

He returned home this weekend to show his Super Bowl ring to his grandmother and celebrate his 24th birthday, which is today.

Via PFT.
He'll likely get knocked off the roster after this incident but we'll have to wait until we hear the whole story.

I would say he is innocent until proven guilty

but considering this is a felony charge, it could impact his status on the roster. (ie: to the front office take a chance on him?)

That is if he gets bail and can participate in training camp.

I think he is gone though.

Good news for Pope. Still most likely a goner though.

Giants defensive back Geoffrey Pope has been cleared of any and all allegations of misconduct in connection with a late Friday/early Saturday brawl that resulted in a man being hit in the head with a champagne bottle.

Pope’s agent, Rich De Luca, tells us that Pope was cleared after the man responsible for swinging the bottle of bubbly turned himself in.

It was initially reported that Pope faced felony battery charges in the wake of the incident.

We’ve also separately heard that Browns receiver Braylon Edwards was at the same club that evening, but that he was wise enough to make like a shepherd and get the flock out when things to a turn toward violence. Edwards was not detained, questioned, or accused at any time of any wrongdoing.

De Luca tells us that the Giants are aware of the development, and that they’ll be issuing a statement soon.

It is notable that the giants knocked 5 people off the roster and pope wasn't one of them.

It is also interesting that they need to make room for one more player so that the rookies can be signed; are they waiting to see what happens with Pope?
