Apologies for yet another version. But I have started to look into what the Giants would need to run a Tampa 2 Defense, it actually makes a big difference.

Assuming the Giants use some form of Tampa 2 and based on the assumptions the are willing to make a splash in free agency. I guess what this shows is that there are a huge number of options on the table depending what happens in free agency.

I have assumed we will run some version of a Tampa 2.

Safety is a priority as is both MLB and OLB.

The Defensive line is solid and can get pressure up front. Our CBs are a good fits being physical guys who can protect the sidelines from the line of scrimmage to 15-20 yards out. We need OLBs with speed and good coverage skills.

If we do go with some variant of a Tampa 2, here is what I would like to see

Trade
Trade Umenyiora to San Diego for their 1st round pick #28)

Trade Jacobs to Houston fir their 3rd round pick (#81)

An uncapped year, it is an opportunity to trim large contracts.

Last year Jacobs singed a four-year, $25 million contract. The deal contains $13 million guaranteed, including $7.85 million in signing and roster bonuses in the first two years, Jacobs' first-year salary, and most of his second-year salary. 2009: $3.5 million, 2010: $3.65 million, 2011: $4.65 million, 2012: $4.9 million, 2013: Free Agent. Cap charge: $5.5 million (2009).

This means there is $19.5 million left for the last 3 years of Jacobs contract, which is alot more than he is worth (the RB franchise numer is $8.156m).
The Texans are looking for a physical compliment to Slaton; it also allows then to address other needs early

This also makes it alot more likely we can retain Bradshaw after he comes of contract.

Cofield is signed by Patriots giving #53 in compensation
The Pats get a good young experienced 3-4 DE allowing them to address other need with their first 3 picks.

Free Agency

Sign UFA MLB Gary Brackett, Colts
Dansby may be too expensive. Brackett gives us a MLB wo is experience in the Tampa 2. This isn't likely a long term solution, we will likely need to draft someone

Sign UFA S Ryan Clark, Steelers
Clark is a good experienced safety to team with Phillips. Like Brackett he isn't a long term solution, but he is a big immediate upgrade.

Sign UFA DE Aaron Kampfman, Packers
Kampfman is an under-rated DE and quality pass rusher who won't break the bank. Joining the Giants DE rotation replacing Osi is a good fit and reunites him with his former Dline coach. This may be something of a luxury, but with Osi gone, we do need another legitimate edge-rusher.

n UFA RB Brian Westbrook, Eagles
With Jacobs departure, we need more RB help. We have good young talent, so a reasonable value veteran is a good fit. Westbrrok knows the NFC East well and provides us a genuine recieving threat out of the back field. He also adds valuable experience.
Other options include Thomas Jones or Willie Parker

Re-Sign UFA QB David Carr

This gives us experienced veterans to fill our major needs giving us the core of a quality team. It also means we can focus on developing the team for the future in the draft.

Positional Moves

Diehl to LG, Beatty to LT - this upgrades the trenched

Sintim to DE - Sintim doesn't have the speed or coverage skills to play LB in a tampa 2, so he moves to DE.

With the free agency moves I need to completely rethink the draft; but somewhat surprisingly, I don't have too many changes.

Draft

15. OLB/MLB Sean Weatherspoon, Missouri (6-2, 245, 4.60)
Weatherspoon is a great fit at MLB or OLB in the Tampa 2

28. MLB Brandon Spikes, Florida (6-3, 258, 4.75)
Spikes is a good MLB option with excellent athleticism and coverage skills. Spikes is good value here It will likely mean the departure of Blackburn and/or Wilkinson.

45. FS/SS Nate Allen, South Florida (6-2, 205, 4.50)
Allen is a good quality all round saftey, he is under the radar at the moment, but he is a genuine talent. Allen will be ready to contribute early.

76. CB Brandon Ghee, Wake Forest (6-0, 190, 4.45)
A big physical, hard hitting CB with good ball skills, Ghee upgrades our CB depth.

81. OLB/MLB Pat Angerer, Iowa (6-1, 235, 4.50)
Angerer is a speedy LB who can play either inside or outside for us. Initially he will give depth at OLB

123. DT Michael Neal, Purdue (6-4, 302, 5.00)
Neal is a good all round DT prospect with good strength and quickness

143. TE Michael Hoomanawanui, Illinois (6-5, 270, 4.80)
A strong, athletic TE who blocks like a tackle.

174. SS Barry Church, Toledo (6-2, 219, 4.55)
A good option to upgrade SS depth ans special teams

205. P Zoltan Mesko, Michigan (6-5, 231, 4.75)
A talented punter with a booming kick

OC (2): Shaun O'Hara, Rich Seubert

Defense (25)

I really like how this one came out (although it sees the departure of Blackburn and Tollefson)

It has 3 good value veterans to fill immediate needs with experienced veterans, but none will break the bank. The emphasis is still building through the draft.

The players are all a good fit for Fewell's system and should see the defense turn around in a major way. It overhauls the defense (which is needed), also the building blocks are in place for the future.

I really like the LB corps you have there.
They are three rookie LB's with a lot of potential.

I agree and overhauling the LBs will be our biggest challenge.

I think we will use some variantins of a Tampa 2.

That means we need LBs with decent speed and good coverage skills.
Pierce and Clark are not good fits and thus are gone.

Sintim has problems playing is space and coverage, the new scheme isn't a good fit for him, but moving to DE is very doable and upgrades our pass rush.

Reese will want to rebuild through the draft

I don't think Reese wants to rely on Rookies to upgrade our defense, we need guys who will be immediate upgrades.

The big ticker free agent Dansby is likely out of our price range. But Brackett is an ideal fit, he is experienced at MLB in a good Tampa 2, he won't be hughely expensive and he can provide leadership whilst the young players we have develop.

There will be good value and depth available at LB this year, which combied with the Giants draft trends makes me think McClain is unlikely.

There is one other position that could be addressed - RB

It will all depend on how the front office view Jacobs. If they view him as a genuine franchise RB, which I don't think they do.

With an uncapped year, it is an opportunity to trim large contracts.

This means there is $19.5 million left for the last 3 years of Jacobs contract.

I think it would be ideal to sign an experienced free agent suxh as Willie Parker or Brian Westbrook and trade Jacobs. A good option is the Texans who are looking for a physical compliment to Slaton. A veteran RB is the best option as we already have good young talent.
This also increases the chance we can retain Bradshaw after the season.

If we stay Weatherspoon is the guy I want. I still prefer moving up but like I said in the blue print 1, I like Spoon as our MLB.

After thinking about it, I like Weatherspoon either as an OLB or MLB

I don't want to trade Jacobs but what kind of contract is Willie Parker looking for?
