Offseason Thoughts Version 5
We have a clear idea of the draft class with the combine and the RFA tenders; free agency starts later this week
I have assumed we will run some variant of a Tampa 2 building from the foundation interited from Spagnuolo/Sheridan. Safety is a priority as is both MLB and OLB.
The Defensive line is solid and can get pressure up front. Our CBs are a good fits being physical guys who can protect the sidelines from the line of scrimmage to 15-20 yards out. We need OLBs with speed and good coverage skills.
I don't expect we will see a big splash in free agency.
I have assumed the situation with Osi Umenyiora can be amicably resolved and was largely a frustrated player venting.
If we do go with some variant of a Tampa 2, here is what I currently would like to see....
Trade
Trade Sinorice Moss and 4th round pick to NY Jets for S Kerry Rhodes
The Jets want to get rid of Rhodes, but the value of safety is low with the exceptional draft class. Moss will get a legitimate opportunity for playing time and gives Sanchez a target with legitimate speed.
Approximate Contract: 4 years, $15.5million
Free Agency
Sign RFA MLB Kirk Morrison, Raiders
Morrison is a very under rated MLB with good tackling and coverage. Morrison will be reasonably priced cap wise.
Compensation - 3rd round pick
Sign RFA OLB Thomas Howard, Raiders
Howard is a very good fit at SLB as a speedy OLB ; he also has played a lot with Morrison. Howard has blazing speed and is a good tackler.
Compensation - 2nd round pick.
Re-Sign UFA QB David Carr
This gives us experienced veterans to fill our major needs giving us the core of a quality team. It also means we can focus on developing the team for the future in the draft.
Positional Moves
Diehl to LG, Beatty to LT - this upgrades the trenches
Draft
15. S Taylor Mays, USC (6-3, 230, 4.43, 24)
This is a best player available pick. If Mays is on the table here, this is an easy pick. He will develop behind Rhodes and Phillips, giving us three starting calibre safeties.
Approximate contract: 5 years, $18 million ($10.5M guaranteed)
143. CB Amari Spievey , Iowa (5-11, 195, 4.51, DNP)
A strong, athletic CB with good tools; with a quality DB class there will be talent here.
174. RB Lonyae Miller, Fresno State (6-0, 221, 4.53, 26)
Miller is a good under rated RB who will likely compete with Johnson for a roster spot.
205. P Zoltan Mesko, Michigan (6-5, 231, 4.75)
A talented punter with a booming kick

Re: Offseason Thoughts Version 5
I think this team would have the potential makings of a very good team
Offense:
- Dominant Power Running Attack
- Explosive Passing Game
Defense
- Aggressive Defensive Schemes
- Dominant Pass Rush
- Mobile LBs who can cover and tackle
- Secondary with good ball skills and an intimidating enforcer
Special teams
- Quality return guys
- good coverage units
- good L/S
- Stong leg punter to help with field position
- solid kicker with lots of experience and ability to perform under pressure.
Naturally it will depend on how the team performs in training camp and preseason, but we would have alot of the pieces in place for the Giants to rebound big time
