Rolle gets five years, $37 million from Giants
Posted by Mike Florio on March 5, 2010 10:09 PM ET

Barely a day after being cut by the Cardinals, Rolle has agreed to terms with the Giants.

Per a league source, it's a five-year deal worth $37 million, an NFL record for a safety. Rolle gets $15 million guaranteed and $22.5 million over the first three years.

He reportedly wanted $8 million per year, but the top of the market had been only $7 million. Rolle now pushes the high-water market even higher, thanks to the final year of a rookie deal that forced the Cardinals to pay him $12 million or set him free.

The Bears and Dolphins were in on the deal early, but both dropped out after plunking down big money on other big-name defensive free agents.

Source: Rolle to be highest-paid safety

Antrel Rolle is set to become the highest-paid safety in NFL history.

The New York Giants agreed to a five-year, $37 million deal with Rolle, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Rolle is guaranteed $15 million and will receive $22.5 million over the first three years.

The Arizona Cardinals release Rolle Thursday to avoid paying him the $4 million roster bonus and $8 million salary he was due but indicated they were interested in re-signing him.

Rolle was Arizona's first-round pick, the eighth selection overall, out of Miami in 2005. He began his pro career as a cornerback but had most of his success after being switched to safety in 2008.

In 68 regular-season games, 59 as a starter, Rolle had 12 interceptions, four forced fumbles and 1½ sacks. In six postseason games, Rolle had an interception and a fumble recovery.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Cardinals | Did nothing wrong trying to re-sign Rolle
Fri, 05 Mar 2010 19:19:13 -0800

Agent Drew Rosenhaus said during an interview on SIRIUS NFL Radio that the Arizona Cardinals did nothing wrong in trying to re-sign FS Antrel Rolle, who signed with the New York Giants Friday, March 5. Rosenhaus said it was more Rolle wanted to be back on the East Coast and the Giants were the right fit.

Report: Rolle receives Giant deal
March, 5, 2010

By Matt Mosley

The New York Giants and free-agent safety Antrel Rolle have agreed to a five-year, $37 million contract, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Rolle will become the highest-paid safety in league history and his new contract includes a $15 million signing bonus.

Judging by that contract ($22.5 mil in first three years), the Giants are still angry about how their secondary was torched in '09. If Kenny Phillips is fully recovered from microfracture surgery on his knee, he and Rolle should form one of the best safety duos in the league. They both played at the University of Miami and both possess excellent range. In fact, Rolle entered the league as a cornerback.

General manager Jerry Reese was very open about his disappointment in the way Michael Johnson and C.C. Brown performed at safety last season and he vowed not to let something like that happen again. With Rolle in the fold, the Giants have to feel a lot better about their secondary. The Cardinals are quickly becoming the top talent supplier in the league with Rolle, Anquan Boldin and Karlos Dansby already joining other teams.

In his 59 starts with the Cardinals, Rolle had 12 interceptions and four forced fumbles. He'll obviously be an immediate starter for the Giants. Not a lot of $37 million backup safeties in the league. I think this decision also had a lot to do with the fact the Giants play in the same division with some very talented tight ends in Jason Witten, Brent Celek and Chris Cooley.

Giants Land Safety Antrel Rolle

11:40 a.m. ET: **Updated with quotes.**

The Giants finally got their man.

Safety Antrel Rolle, the former starting free safety for Arizona, has signed with the Giants, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

“Antrel is a young, ascending veteran player, and he is an outstanding person who will bring leadership, versatility and more big play ability to our secondary,” said Giants general manager Jerry Reese.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Rolle’s contract is a five-year deal worth $37M with $15M guaranteed. That comes out to $7.4M per season, slightly less than the $8M Rolle was allegedly seeking per season.

“I’m ecstatic,” Rolle, who has missed just one game in the last four seasons, said after signing his contract around 11:15 p.m. ET on Friday night. “Words can’t really express how I feel now. I had five great years with the Cardinals organization. But I felt it was time for a change. The Giants are a first-class organization all the way. There are great opportunities for me, and I am excited to be working with the players I’ll be working with. I think the sky’s going to be the limit as to what we can do.

“I’m extremely excited for the opportunity, and I feel truly blessed. They have the confidence I can come in and be the player that they expect me to be, and I will live up to everything they expect and go beyond.”

Rolle, whom the Cardinals released to avoid paying a $4M roster bonus, had been in prior negotiations with Chicago and Miami. The negotiations with the Bears however, reportedly never heated up while Miami was believed to have offered the six- year veteran a five-year deal worth between $30M- $35M.

However with Miami signing one of Rolle’s former teammates, LB Karlos Dansby, to a monster five-year, $43M contract, it became unlikely that the Dolphins would make a second splurge.

Rolle, a former first round draft pick – he was the second safety chosen in the 2005 draft, behind Tennessee’s Adam “Pacman” Jones -- switched to free safety during the 2008 off-season after spending his first three seasons at strong safety. He will likely take over at strong safety for the Giants, replacing last year’s incumbent, Michael Johnson.

Snapshot of S Antrel Rolle, 6-0, 228 lbs.
Experience: 6 years; College: Miami, Fla.
Total tackles: 337 (296 solo); Sacks: 1; Passes Defensed: 36;
Interceptions: 12 for 394 yards, 4 TDs
**************************************

With the signing of Rolle, I can't help but wonder if the Giants will rescind their free agent tender given to C.C. Brown, who started for Phillips last year but who was eventually benched in favor of Aaron Rouse. Brown, who is a restricted free agent, was tendered given a $1.226M offer, but as of Friday had not signed it. The Giants could ultimately rescind that offer, which would make Brown an unrestricted free agent. Even if Brown does sign the offer, the Giants can cut Brown and not owe him a penny.

Not much else seems to be going on with the Giants and free agency. Really the only other story to keep an eye on involves backup QB David Carr, who was scheduled to visit with the 49ers tonight and tomorrow. Carr, whose name has also been linked to the Cardinals and Cleveland, is interested in going to a team where he has a legitimate chance of competing for a starting job. Although Reese said that they would love to have him back, I’m not very optimistic of that happening.

If Carr does sign elsewhere – the 49ers would be a good spot for him if he were looking to play closer to Bakersfield, Calif., where he grew up – my best guess is the Giants might turn to Mark Brunell, who’s a UFA and who’s not expected to return to the Saints. Brunell was with head coach Tom Coughlin when the two were in Jacksonville, so that move would seem to make the most sense.

However, some other options have since opened up. One intriguing possibility is Jim Sorgi, whom Indianapolis released today. Sorgi is a former 2004 sixth round pick of the Colts who no doubt brings a lot to the table given all the time he spent in meeting rooms with Peyton Manning, Eli’s big brother.

Giants sign Safety Rolle
Michael Eisen, Senior Writer/Editor - Giants.com

MARCH 5, 2010

EAST RUTHERFORD - The Giants significantly upgraded their secondary tonight with the acquisition of safety Antrel Rolle.

Rolle, 6-0 and 208 pounds, spent his first five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, who released him on Thursday. The eighth overall selection of the 2005 NFL Draft, Rolle has been an outstanding all-around safety the last two years after playing his first three seasons at cornerback.

"Antrel is a young, ascending veteran player, and he is an outstanding person who will bring leadership, versatility and more big play ability to our secondary," general manager Jerry Reese said.

Rolle visited the Timex Performance Center on Friday and met with Reese, head coach Tom Coughlin and the defensive coaches.

"I'm ecstatic," Rolle said after signing his contract around 11:15 p.m. "Words can't really express how I feel now. I had five great years with the Cardinals organization. But I felt it was time for a change. The Giants are a first-class organization all the way. There are great opportunities for me, and I am excited to be working with the players I'll be working with. I think the sky's going to be the limit as to what we can do.

"I'm extremely excited for the opportunity, and I feel truly blessed. They have the confidence I can come in and be the player that they expect me to be, and I will live up to everything they expect and go beyond."

Rolle, 27, has played in 68 regular season games with 59 starts. His career totals include 337 tackles (296 solo), 12 interceptions (including four he has returned for touchdowns; three in 2007), 36 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and 1.5 sacks.

In 2009, Rolle started all 15 games in which he played and was credited with 72 tackles (61 solo). He also intercepted four passes, the second-highest total of his career. One of those was on an Eli Manning pass with 1:08 remaining in the fourth quarter on Oct. 25, sealing the Cardinals' 24-17 victory over the Giants. Rolle had eight tackles (six solo) in that game.

The previous year, Rolle switched from corner to safety and finished with a career-high 89 tackles (78 solo) and an interception that he returned 40 yards for a touchdown.

The Giants entered the offseason seeking help at safety. Their best player at the position, Kenny Phillips, missed the final 14 games of the 2009 season with an arthritic condition in his knee that required surgery. The Giants are hopeful Phillips will return at full strength, but the team's other safeties - Michael Johnson, Aaron Rouse and C.C. Brown - did not perform as well as the Giants had hoped.

In four seasons at the University of Miami, Rolle was credited with 183 tackles, five interceptions and also doubled as a return man, returning 13 punts in 2003 for 202 yards and one touchdown. He was also selected as Miami's ACC Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and received his bachelor's degree in Sports Administration in May 2005.

After the Cardinals selected him with the eighth pick of the 2005 draft, Rolle was impressive in the first three games of his rookie season before suffering a left knee injury which required surgery and kept him on the sidelines for nine games. With his knee finally healthy, he came back and started all 16 games in 2006 and played in all 16 games (eight starts) in 2007 before switching to safety in 2008.

Rolle has missed only one game in the previous four seasons.

This sounds like a pretty good deal, especially in an uncapped year. I have no problem with this.

Let's pray for Kenny Phillips to get his legs back and under him.
