Rolle to become the leader presence the Giants Defense needs

By TONI MONKOVIC
“He is an outstanding person who will bring leadership, versatility and more big play ability to our secondary.” — General Manager Jerry Reese
The Jets acquired a talented defensive back, Antonio Cromartie, they hope will straighten out as a person.
The Giants acquired a talented defensive back, Antrel Rolle, they expect will become a team leader.
Rolle also expects it. He said he was “ecstatic” about joining the Giants, and was looking forward to filling the leadership void left by Antonio Pierce.
Excerpts from a conference call today, via The Associated Press:
“I don’t want someone to make me a leader. That will come natural. But it’s part of who I am and the type of player I am. I’m extremely motivated to make the Giants’ defense strong again. It’s a team that isn’t that far removed from a Super Bowl. I know a couple things went wrong last season, but if leadership comes in to play, I’m looking forward to that role.”
On Kenny Phillips, who is trying to recover from a serious knee injury: “I know Kenny quite well. I know he’s a first-class guy, a standup guy. He’s a dynamic athlete and I know we can be the best pair of safeties in the league. We’re going to push each other and be a dynamic duo.”
“I’ve been talking with Kenny a lot over the last month or so to get a feel of things. It wasn’t just about football, but life in general.
“I know he’s working hard, rehabbing that injury. Once he’s back, he’s never going to leave my side. We desperately need him. … He played a big part of the reason why I’m here.”
Giants Coach Tom Coughlin on Rolle: “Of course, he’s a Pro Bowl player. He has outstanding range and athleticism. You can see the intangibles that he brings to the table in terms of his communication skills and his energy. He’s one of those upbeat guys that you really do enjoy being around. And he’s very talented.”
More on Rolle:
Ralph Vacchiano, The Daily News:
The Cardinals still wanted Rolle back and made a late run at re-signing him right after they lost linebacker Karlos Dansby, who earlier signed a five-year, $43 million contract with Miami. In fact, one report said the Cardinals matched the offer, but Rolle chose the Giants anyway.
