Offseason Thoughts - 17 March Empty Offseason Thoughts - 17 March

Post  Big_Pete Tue Mar 16, 2010 7:24 am

I am thinking our new defensive scheme will be some variant of a Tampa 2 (incoporating some elements from Spagnuolo's/Sheridan's system.

I think the Giants will take a more low/patient key approach however we will at MLB, S and perhaps a couple of other positions before the offseason is done.
I think MLB will be added before the season.

trades

Giants trade Osi Umenyiora to St Louis for #33
This offseason has shown that pass rushers are a premium, particulalry with the prevalence of passing offenses in the NFL. This move reunites Umenyiora with Spagnuolo and gives the Rams a legitmate pass rusher.

Giants trade Barry Cofield to Oakland for #69
I think The Giants want to keep Cofield but only at the right price and he will get more money elsewhere. Decent young DTs are rare, particularly this year. This reunites Cofield with Mike Wauffle and gives the raiders a much needed upgrade inside.

Draft

15. LB Rolando McClain, Alabama (6-3, 254, DNP, 24)
A Stud MLB is exactly what is needed. With Boley calling the plays starting a rookie MLB is not such a big deal. Either McClain or Weatherspoon will almost certainly be available.

33. TE Jermaine Gresham, Oklahoma (6-5, 261, 4.72, 20)
A Best player available pick. This gives the Giants a legitimate all round TE. It will allow Boss to eventually slide into the #2 TE and with Beckum in a genuine H-Back role, gives the Giants a formidable trio of TEs. This will be a big help in the green zone. Expect Beckum to be used as a H-Back a reasonable amount instead of a traditional FB (remember Shockey played a similar role at times)

46. RB Jahvid Best, California (5-10, 199, 4.35, 18)
The running game needs a spark and Best is electifying and a home run threat every time he touches the ball. He also gives us a legitimate weapon out of the backfield in the passing game. The Giants are a good fit as he will be a good fit into a rotation with the other guys.

69. G Vladimir Ducasse, Massachusetts (6-4, 332, 5.27, 29)
Ducasse is a powerfull small school guard with good athleticism and is a good pick here. Beatty is the future at LT and Diehl can play either LT, LG or RT. This gives us a stud guard to develop for the future. This gives the Giants plenty of options for the offensive line.

76. S Major Wright, Florida (6-0, 206, 4.48, 16)
A good safety to increase our safety depth.

112. DT Linval Joseph, East Carolina (6-5, 328, 5.11, 39)
A strong athletic DT to anchor our Dline

143. LB Rennie Curran, Georgia (5-11, 235, 4.72, 25)
A good athelic WLB to upgrade our speed and athleticism. Curran will backup Boley and provide special teams role.

174. DE Lindsay Witten (6-5, 250, 4.71, 23)
A good small school pass rusher to add to our DE rotation.

205. P Zoltan Mesko, Michigan (6-5, 240, DNP, 16)
A strong legged punter with a huge kick

This would give the Giants a roster something like:

Offense (25)
QB (3): Eli Manning, Jim Sorgi, Rhett Bhomar

WR (6): Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, Ramsees Barden, Domenik Hixon, Derek Hagan/ Sinorice Moss
TE (3): Jermaine Gresham, Kevin Boss, Travis Beckum

RB (4): Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, Jahvid Best, Andre Brown/ Gatrell Johnson
FB (1): Madison Hedgecock

OT (3): Kareem McKenzie, William Beatty, Guy Whimper/ Kevin Boothe/Adam Koets
OG (3): Chris Snee, David Diehl, Vladimir Ducasse
OC (2): Shaun O'Hara, Rich Seubert

Defense (25)

DE (4): Justin Tuck, Matthias Kiwanuka, Dave Tollefson, Lindsay Witten
NT (2): Linval Jospeh, Rocky Bernard
UT (2)): Chris Canty, Jay Alford

SLB (2): Clint Sintim, Brian Kehl
MLB (2): Rolando McClain, Jonathan Goff/ Chase Blackburn/ Gerris Wilkinson
OLB (2): Michael Boley, Rennie Curran

CB (6): Corey Webster, Aaron Ross, Terrell Thomas, Bruce Johnson, Vince Anderson, DJ Williams
S (4): Antrel Rolle, Kenny Phillips, Michael Johnson, Major Wright

Special Teams (3)

LS (1): Zak DeOssie
K (1): Lawrence Tynes
P (1): Zoltan Mesko

Offseason Thoughts - 17 March Empty Re: Offseason Thoughts - 17 March

I'm all for moving osi and cofield but we have to replace them with players better than late round picks. Our dline was a weak spot last year and by your mock we just made them weaker.

I don't like the ducasse pick just because I don't think he's our kind of lineman unless he was drafted to be our future rt. I'm not crazy about drafting a te either but the possiblity is there.

I like wright, best, Joseph, and mcclain. I don't Think mcclain makes it to us. Joseph is a good project player not someone I want to rely on as an immediate starter.

I agree with you about starting Joseph, Coefield is likely to stick around

I think eiher McClain or weatherspoon makes it to #15, I have a hunch it will be both
