Gil Brandt still knows a few things about college prospects. The onetime Dallas Cowboys' personnel guru said on Sirius radio last week he expects the Giants to select South Florida defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul with the 15th pick of the April 22 draft.

That name is one of more than a half-dozen tied to the Giants' selection in the first round, a pick that could go in any direction save quarterback and wide receiver.

Jevon Kearse was labeled "Freak" when he entered the NFL in 1999, because a man with his size and agility is considered a freak of nature. Pierre-Paul is "Freak II." At 6 feet 4 3/4, 270 pounds, with 4.71 speed, a 30-inch vertical jump and the ability to do 14 back flips without stopping, Pierre-Paul is a rare specimen.

There is a huge caveat for the team that selects him. Pierre-Paul played just one season at South Florida and did not start until several games into that season. He bounced around in junior college for a couple of years because the son of Haitian immigrants could not master the reading segment of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, a prerequisite to four-year college entry in the state.

One reason Brandt pegged Pierre-Paul to the Giants is because coach Tom Coughlin attended South Florida's pro day. It was one of three pro days Coughlin graced, all at schools with multiple defensive prospects: Alabama (LB Rolando McClain, CB Kareem Jackson, NT Terrence Cody, CB Javier Arenas), Florida (LB Brandon Spikes, CB Joe Haden, DE Carlos Dunlap, FS Major Wright) and USF (Pierre-Paul, FS Nate Allen, CB Jerome Murphy, LB Dion Wilson, DE George Selvie).

So Coughlin's attention was not centered on one man.

GM Jerry Reese, however, likes drafting athletes and Pierre-Paul certainly fits that criteria. As a rookie, his only role (albeit a valuable one) might be providing an outside rush in pure passing situations. Things such as getting him stout enough to stand up against the run and teaching him to break down when approaching a quarterback or runner will take time.

Considering the upside, however, some NFL team — perhaps the Giants — will take a first-round shot at this classic boom-or-bust prospect.

You know what, I wouldn't be surprised at all if we drafted Pierre-Paul, but I think it is unlikely

He is a fast, athletic pure pashrusher the Giants love.

Osi suggested that Fewell wants his DEs to play a little wider and get upfield more, so this kind of guy fits that mold.

what do you guys think

I'm thinking if we use our 1st round pick on another "freak" prospect DE, who will only contribute as a pass rushing specialist this year I will definitely question the men in charge. Especially when we still have glaring holes at MLB and DT.

The only way I could see this happening is if we make a move with Osi. Thats the only way. I'm actually tired of hearing how many back flips in a row he could do. Tell me how that relates to fooball?
