Fewell's defensive schemes
Deon Grant gave some insight into Fewell's new defensive schemes
Deon Grant was with Carolina from 2000-2003. Anyone have some insight into what their defensive system was like then?
He might not have to worry about whether he sees the field this year if Phillips is healthy, as Fewell has plans to incorporate packages with three safeties. “That’s what coach was saying,” Grant said. “That’s one of the reasons why I came. He said that’s in his plan and that in his defense he always wants to play with three safeties, that’s one of the main reasons why I came here.
“I think it’s going to be a good look,” he added. “We have the talent here. We have an offense that can put points on the board and won’t keep us on the field all day and you look at our (defensive) front guys and I can’t ask for a better front than that so all we have to do on that back end is make sure we take care of our part. I think the scheme is going to be a great scheme.”
Speaking of Fewell’s scheme, the new #34 on the Giants said it reminds him a lot of another scheme he played in earlier in his career. “It’s similar to the scheme I played in Carolina my first four years, other than throwing in the Tampa-2 here and there.”

Re: Fewell's defensive schemes
if the similarities with Carolina do carry over, looking at their draft strategy may give some idea of what we may use
2001 - LB Dan Morgan, DT Kris Jenkins
2002 - DE Julius Peppers, LB Will Witherspoon
So really I expect we will go after that big stud DT, it is also very much like what Fewell had in Buffalo with Stroud.
Elements of the Tampa 2 I expect to see used are
1. the Primary pass rush from the Dline, with the DEs in particular being used agressively, playing a little wider and getting upfield alot more
2. Physical run stopping corners
both of which Fewell used in Buffalo
So perhaps this gives an indication of what we will see this year. It actually makes me think that the Giants going after a player like Suh in the draft is very possible.

Would love to get Suh but not sure how it would be made possible without throwing in a ton of picks and the kitchen sink.
