some thoughts on Fewell's schemes

Post  Big_Pete on Sat Apr 24, 2010 9:10 pm

I have been thinking a little on Fewell's schemes

firstly, with what has happened with the roster so far, I think we will use a lot of nickle packages using three safeties, particularly in passing downs. This explains why we have gone so safety heavy and not addressed MLB as much. I expect we will again keep 10 DBs, but with a 5/5 - CB/S ratio this year.

the Dline is where we will be getting the bulk of our pass rush, but he will mix in blitzes from all over the place.

We will play with a big anchor up front with Joseph/Cofield which will keep our LBs clean allowing to flow to the play rather than fight through traffic. I think Wilkinson, Goff and Dillard will compete for the MLB spot and whoever wins will do fine.

I am actually getting really excited about our defense, I think it will rebound in a big way.

I'm also excited about the defensive line and defensive backs unit, but still sceptical about our linebackers.

We really don't know what we have in Sintim at strong and still have major question ?? at mike.

Goff looked lost and had slow reaction times to the plays last year.
If there were a game today and I had to choose, I'd put Blackburn in there.

We'll just have to see how it plays out and if some of these linebackers will get better over time.
Our other alternative is to make a late signing for a vet.

To be honest I think Blackburn is on the way out. He wasn't mentioned bu Reese when mentioning the MLB options and I get the feeling the fronty office feel he has had his opportunities. Also there is a very big shift to speed and athleticism this year. Blackburn has an uphill battle for a roster spot, but he is a fighter.

The biggest advantage for MLB is the DTs - We have the anchors up fron in Cofield and Jospeh to keep blockers off the MLB. This will let the MLB free to make the play. - This is much like What MLBs such as Pozlunzy, Beason do so well in similar schemes.

I think at this point Wilksinson in the front runner for MLB. We know Wilkinson can play and it has only been injuries to keep him back, lets not forget he played MLB in college.

I think the jury is out on Goff. We should remember the time when he got his chance to play was also when our defense was a debacle last year. Lets see what he can do with a real defense.

I really like the Dillard kid as well. He isn't flasy, but he makes plays. Also he is used to a somewhat similar system playing behind Ndamukong Suh.

I think one of those three is likely to be our MLB. Kehl is also a chance, but I think he is a better fit as Boley's understudy. I think Fewell system will suit these guys reasonably well.

There is always the chance of a trade (eg for AJ Hawk or Derrick Johnson), but I don't think that is likely. Even then it is more likely to be for a player. [I think a WR is the most likely at this point]

As far as SLB goes, like it or not Sintim is pencilled in as the starter. I think the front office expect him to take his play to the next level this year.

I think all of these projections of Fewell's schemes is a waste. He has worked with a 3-4, 4-3 base, and tampa 2. Expect anything.

Wilkinson hasn't done shit in 4 years, I'd be surprised if he was front runner for anything. This move is his last resort IMO, he's a goner.

Blackburn is one of our best special teams players. I don't see a replacement for him in that are yet. He also has played all 3 lb positions at this level effectively. Something Wilkinson has not done.

Goff is a smart player but nothing more than a back up.

Dillard is very inexperienced. I'd be surprised if he contributed much right away.

I'm holding out hope for a MLB to be brought in either by trade or Vet FA. None of our MLB's can cover. This is a major hole in our defense.

I like Sintim starting. I think he'll have a good year for the most part.
