Jeff Feagles likely to retire this week Empty Jeff Feagles likely to retire this week

Post  56 Crazed Dogs Sun Apr 25, 2010 9:24 am

Jeff Feagles decision to call it quits this week was a bit of a surprise to the Giants, who had recently re-signed the 44-year-old punter to a new contract.

GM Jerry Reese said that Feagles is “physically unsure” if he can still play at the level he has in the past.

Tom Coughlin will meet with Feagles this week, but it is 99% certain that Feagles will retire.

“This came from Jeff, not us,” said Coughlin. “With the draft in front of us, he put the best interest of the team first, as he always would.” That allowed the Giants to take Matt Dodge, a strong-legged punter from East Carolina (who can also kick-off if needed) in the seventh round.

Feagles was also the Giants’ holder for PATs and field goals. Coughlin was asked who would inherit that responsibility this season. “One of the quarterbacks. Bomar or Sorgi. Sorgi has held for kicks.”

The punting job will now be a showdown between Dodge, who Reese says hits “moonshots” and former Australian-rules star Jy Bond. Coughlin said Bond was acclimating to the NFL – “he’s going through the process right now”. The Aussie must have made an impression on the coach in his short time here.

“Hey, I’m his ‘mate’ now, ” said a smiling Coughlin. “But then again, so are you guys..”

This certainly makes more sense now of drafting the punter in the 7th round.

This is a classy way to end it all too. I know Feagles wants to play, but his body just isn't up to it.

He has been great for the Giants for a long time.

Congratulations Me Feagles, enjoy your hard earned retirement.
