Long term answer at MLB? Empty Long term answer at MLB?

I am not surprised the Giants didn't draft a MLB in the earlier rounds of the draft and here is why

1. Rolando McClain was the only ILB they saw as an immediate starter.

my guess is that Weatherspoon was considered an OLB and Sean Lee's injury issued were a factor

2. The Giants got a player in Dillard whom they considered in the next tier of MLBs available.

3. I think the Giants have considered the ILB draft class which has good talent and depth. These are the some of the better prospects next year:

Greg Jones ILB Michigan State (6-1, 224, 4.59)
Quan Sturdivant ILB North Carolina (6-2, 232, 4.56)
Kelvin Sheppard ILB LSU (6-3, 239, 4.64)
Mike Mohamed ILB California (6-3, 237, 4.75)

Don'ta Hightower ILB Alabama (6-4, 250, 4.74)*
Chris Galippo ILB Southern California (6-2, 250, 4.74)*
Korey Williams ILB Southern Mississippi (6-2, 234, 4.65)*

plus OLBs who could possibly move to middle

Mark Herzlich OLB Boston College (6-4, 238, 4.68)
Travis Lewis OLB Oklahoma (6-2, 232, 4.53)*
Akeem Ayers OLB UCLA (6-4, 252, 4.68)*

*denotes underclassmen

All of these guys fit the mold of the kind of ILB we want for Fewell's system. Whilst I am not certain we will go with a MLB in the first round, I do believe there is a good chance we get a MLB in the first couple of rounds next year.

I think the Giants did want McClain (and may have been willing to move up for him), but with him off the board, the Giants went to plan B, which is the more patient approach.

1. Reload the trenches
- this will really help MLB

2. add a solid MLB to compete with the guys we have

3. get a MLB next year
- there is a lot of good talent, many of whom are arguably a much better fit for our system than McClain.

I honestly doubt we plan on playing this year out with the current scraps we have at MLB. Plan B IMO is a trade or wait to see who is released. A trade for A.J. Hawk, Derrick Johnson, or D'Qwell Jackson still remains very possible. Maybe sending Kiwi or Cofield. Bobby Carpenter might be released he's another option IMO.

I agree that we are ideally looking to add a veteran, but it will entirely depend on who is available and at what price. I don't think it is a certainty

I wouldn't mind us looking at Keith Bullock

Bobby Carpenter is a good option and should be released soon.

Other than that the pickings are a little slim and we would need to make a trade of some kind.

I'm not a big fan of Carpenter. Even though, I really enjoyed watching some of those Ohio St games he and Hawk played in.
I thought he would turn out to be a better pro player than what he has so far.

He's just a Terrible fit for the 3-4. Same with hawk and gholston. These guys are more finese players. They never did well taking on blocks even in college. In a 4-3 defense carpenter could play any of the lb postions. He's actually developed into a pretty good coverage backer. Ideally I would like to see us sign carpenter after he is released and trade for hawk. Hawk could play the middle and carpenter could compete with sintim and boley on the outside.
