Interview with TE Bear Pascoe Empty Interview with TE Bear Pascoe

Post  Big_Pete Thu Jul 08, 2010 7:36 am

from insidefootball.com

There are so many battles to keep an eye on this summer. One that
doesn’t get much mention but which is intriguing is for the third tight
end spot, where the Giants are finally hoping to find a blocking tight
end and a guy named McKenna “Bear” Pascoe is hoping to
be that guy.

Q. First thing’s first. Tell me where the nickname came from.
A: Just growing up, I was always bigger than everyone else so it’s
something that kind ogf popped up one day and stuck.

Q: It’s a great nickname for a tight end.
A: Yeah, I like it. I’ll keep it.

Q: Coach Pope described you as a “throwback” tight end. When I
hear that word, I think of someone who loves to block, which seems to
be rare nowadays at your position.
A: That’s how I was used in college out there at Fresno State, where we ran power, downhill football. So it was something I had to develop early on in my career.
The blocking techniques and styles have changed over the years, but I
still remain a blocking tight end first and then a route-runner
afterwards.

Q: You were initially with San Francisco before being picked
up by the Giants and other teams expressed interest in you such as
Pittsburgh and Miami. What is it about being here with the Giants that
gives you reason to hope that this might be the last team you play for
during your career?

A: I think the style of offense. I fit
in real well. The players, the coaches – as soon as I got here, I felt
like I was at home, so all the way around it was a good fit for me.

Q: When you guys came back from your break earlier this year
that all of the position coaches met with the players and presented them
with a list of things to work on this spring. What was on your list?

A:
Just same as everyone – come in and define that blocking position and
really help do whatever it takes to re-establish the run game this year.
Come into training camp, work hard and try to get that spot and define
ourselves as physical tight ends – that was the main point – being
physical in the running game.

Q: What are some of the techniques that Coach Pope has
addressed with you?

A: As soon as I got here, he started
changing my technique. At Fresno State and even at San Francisco, we
were very straight-forward and downhill “stick your face n there to move
guys.” Here, we’re moving them, but we’re leading more with our chest,
getting our hips up underneath us and lifting the guys up. In college, I
was going straight out and trying to move guys back. Here, we’re trying
to move them up and back, so it makes it a lot easier. Once you get
underneath a guy, you can take away his leverage and move him anywhere
you want to go.

Q: What about the mental part of the game?
A:
When I first got here, things were spinning as fast as they could go. It
kind of hindered my playing. I was late off the ball, Iw s thinking too
much about the play. Now I get out there and know what to do. I can
just react and go after it.

Q: What kind of goals do you hope to accomplish in camp other
than obviously winning the job and a roster spot?

A: Just
coming in and showing them I can step up and fill the position, play
special teams and be able to do it all.

Q: What special teams do they have you on?
A:
Two-deep on kickoff return and little bit of punt and field goal block.

Q: Is special teams something you did a lot of in college?
A:
Absolutely. I played them all through college – that’s what we were
really known for out there and I was captain of maybe four or five of
them so it’s something I’ve always done, and I enjoy it.
Q: Why do you enjoy it so much?
A: We had a
saying out there that there are no sacred cows, so we had a lot of
starters both on offense and defense play special teams. That was one
thing that made us so good.

Q: Is there an added incentive or advantage, if you will, for
a tight end to be playing special teams?

A: There is. You
get to use a lot of your same techniques blocking on offense on special
teams, especially with kickoff return when you get into a guy and try to
lift and move him. So it works both way.

I really like this kid's attitude.

He was someone I wanted the Giants to draft in the late rounds last year.

Interview with TE Bear Pascoe Empty Re: Interview with TE Bear Pascoe

Post  Big_Pete Thu Jul 08, 2010 6:22 pm

actually here is a profile on him from thehuddlereport (one of the several sources I use for my own assessment)
http://thehuddlereport.com/Free/archive/2009DRAFT/PlayerProfiles/Bear.Pascoe.htm

Note this is based on talent alone from a business point of view, not where they should actually go in the draft.

Bear Pascoe TE Fresno St

STRENGTHS

First off, you have to love this kid's name! Bear has good size, strength and has the frame to bulk up even more. He gives excellent effort on every play. He has quick feet and seems to love to block for the run. This kid
is not afraid of contact and in the passing game, likes to have a
defender draped all over him as he catches a pass. Bear shows good hands to catch the ball and looks to be smart and very coachable. This kid has the potential to be a complete TE, a core player and fan favorite for the team that drafts him.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE

Bear has to learn better techniques when blocking in the passing game. He uses his pure strength to overcome his opponent right now. He has to start to understand that at the next level, leverage is a necessity. Bear also has to gain better instincts when running routes and learn when to cut his
route off to help out his QB. He must become more of a student of the game in general. He has to improve his knowledge of defenses and timing of patterns and how all that relates to the offense. Right now, he is just doing his job. It looks to me like he has not played the position very long. He has a lot to learn, but if he works hard he will become one hell of a TE.

TALENT BOARD ROUND 2

I love this kid's potential at the next level to become a complete TE. He has good speed and can catch the ball deep. His lateral agility is lacking, which makes him very straight-line in his pass blocking and when running short routes. Learning better blocking techniques and route running tricks will help mask this problem. He can catch the ball all over the field. Right now, Bear is playing with a QB who lacks good accuracy which should not be an issue at the next level.

Bear never stops playing -- you have to love that about a TE. He will block until he falls on his face, but I think what he truly loves to do is catch the ball with an LB on his back to make a first down. He looks to me like he has the need to be much better than he is right now because he gets frustrated with his own play at times especially when blocking. This is a good thing and not a bad thing. I think the team that drafts this kid in a year or two will be set at the TE position for quite a few years to come. You can be sure that Bear will not hibernate in the big games. In fact, he will impact more and more as he gains experience. This kid has big time TE written all over him.

From the huddle report it sounds like he could be an Algae Crumpler type of tight end? which isn't bad especially for a third tight end

I am thinking potentially an Alge Crumpler/Howard Cross type

But even if he is only a Dan Campbell type that still is a great fit

I did notice the front office were quite impressed with his receiving so far in workouts, that's a good start, he can already block well.
