In this installment, rookie DT Linval Joseph, the
Giants’ second round draft pick, talks about making a successful
transition to the NFL in part II of our sitdown with him this past
spring.
Q: Often times you see a situation where a veteran will take
a young guy under his wing. Has anyone specifically taken you under his
wing?
A: Not really. Pretty much everyone helps each
other out because we all have to work together and we’re all trying to
learn some new plays and do new things. They help me and I try to help
them understand the concepts the coaches are teaching.
Q: What are some of the new techniques the coaches have been
teaching you to help you be successful in this defense?
A:
Pretty much a lot of it is with footwork. Another thing is that in
college, they really wanted you to stay low to the ground. Up here, they
want you to have more like a balanced stance.
Q: What are some of the things you specifically do to make
sure your body can take the pounding, especially since now you’re going
to be playing a longer season?
A: I’m a gym rat. I’m always
working out every chance I get to make sure my body is right and that
I’m strong enough to take the pounding. After practice today, I went in
and did some extra cardio. That’s just how I am.

Re: Linval Joseph
As many of you will know I was big on this guy before the draft.
But I am very impressed by what I am hearing from this guy.
The only knock on this guy was his agility, presumably improved footwork will help.
I really like his attitude, he seems very coachable and willing to learn. Importantly he seems like a team focused guy.
I don't think we will every have problems with this guy turning up out of shape. Cardio after practice shows this guy is motivated and a hard worker.
