Hypothetical trade idea
Here is a trade idea.... (hey it is a slow football time)
RB CJ Spiller looks like he is very likely to hold out, quite possibly through out training camp.
Is it worth considering to trade for his rights?
The Giants do need a running back with good hands and is a weapon in the passing game. Spiller is the home run threat plus he is an experienced kick returner.
We would pretty much have two options
1. Trade our 2011 1st round draft pick - considering there is likely to be a rookie salary cap in place, this will save considerable money, a big deal considering the Bills owner has notoriously been tight-fisted (understandable in a small market)
2. We could trade a player, possibly with a conditional draft pick.
The most likely candidate would have to be Osi Umenyiora.
He is saying the right things now, but you have to imagine it is a temporary situation, particularly with strong competition with Kiwanuka and Pierre-Paul waiting in the wings. I think it is a matter of time before his situation boils over again.
Spiller will likely expect a contract similar to last years #9 draft pick BJ Raji (who also held out)
8/13/2009: Signed a five-year, $22.9 million contract.
The deal contains
$17.7 million guaranteed, including a $2.4 million signing bonus.
Also
included is a $5.22 million "likely to be earned" one-time bonus for
Raji playing 35% of the defensive snaps in any given year.
Another $5.6
million is available through incentives, but they are "unlikely to be
earned."
Salaries:
2009: $310,000,
2010: $562,500 (+ $7 million option bonus due
in March)
2011: $955,000,
2012: $1,347,500,
2013: $1.74 million, 2014:
$2,132,500 (Voidable Year),
2015: Free Agent.
Cap charge: $2.05 million
(2009).
Basically it is a 5 year $28.5mil deal if all the escalators are triggered.

Re: Hypothetical trade idea
I would do it for a first next season for sure.
Not sure I would trade for Osi quite yet though.
Reason is, because I think a strong pass rush will be more valuable to us this year than a RB or KR would be.

Thats along the lines I was thinking, and it would suit the Bills owner as well.
I have a big concern about our return game and the fact three of our key RBs are coming off serious injury. Ware has had chances and hasn't stepped up. Johnson is solid, but nothing special.
I do think Reese should consider making a move of some kind.
You are probably right about Osi; I must admit that I am much more comfortable with him on the team. But I have serious concern that the issues from the offseason will return at some point.
